Brexit negotiations thread

David Lammy:

In summary:
Me: "Have you done any Brexit impact assessments?"
@DExEUgov: "Yes, loads, in excruciating detail. We're on top of it"
Me: "Ok, can you publish it so we can see it?"
@DExEUgov: "No, it's secret"
Parliament: "Publish the studies"
@DExEUgov: "They never existed, sorry"

These people are in charge of our smooth exit from the EU. I'm not sure if they are constantly lying or constantly incompetent but I'm guessing it's a mix of the two.

David Davis is at risk of contempt of Parliament in not revealing the impacts of Brexit. They must be so fantastic that he wants to keep it a nice surprise, like waking up on Christmas day to snow on the patio and a copy of Roots To the 92 in your stocking.

You know those Tories that people dislike and its said that the locals would vote for a pig in a blue rosette - I think this is a similar vibe but a red rosette

So everyone in Vauxhall is as thick as pig s*** then because they vote for someone you don't like?
That's your answer to most things really isn't it? if you disagree with me then you must be a tory and stupid.
Perhaps others with differing views have something to contribute.

I really think he is, it was specifically stated in Parliament they existed, then he was instructed to release them and suddenly they don't exist any more. He is playing a dangerous game.

How many people vote Tory regardless of whom their voting for, just because they're not Labour?

True enough, in past elections my voting strategy has, on occasion, been one of voting for the candidate I least detest/worry about etc.
Hence I could never vote for Amiss but could have (did) vote for Sir Teddy.

On the subject of Hoey, a mate of mine works for a political website and he was telling me that during the snap election the Lib Dems chucked money at their candidate in Vauxhall because some analysis they'd paid for considered her to be weak. They thought they stood a real chance of ousting her and were utterly dumbstruck when she returned such a strong majority. For what they wasted in Vauxhall could've, by all accounts, helped get another 3 LDs in the House. What the analysis didn't uncover is just how good she is as a constituent MP - she's got a very strong community presence and is very highly regarded. She's a ****show nationally, but that's only half the game.

On Brexit in general, had a good laugh at Davis getting caught out making out that his department had studied the impacts vociferously then having to shove any old **** together when the SelComm called him out.
“Of course we’re prepared. We’ve done exhaustive analysis. No you cannot see it. Wait, did you just say contempt? Err, OK – wait just one second.”

a Leave candidate is such a Remain area - I'm surprised the Libs didn't do well there. I was amazed that they didn't do better overall as 'the Remain Party' but seemingly the EU was not a major factor in 2017 GE.

David Davis - lying to Parliament - he should be kicked out as far as I am concerned. Take back control so it can be stolen by the likes of him - renders the whole thing a farce.

Couldn't they have asked a constituent?

Why all the fuss about the £50bn+ divorce bill?

The real negotiation is going to be about how much we will need to contribute each year to the EU under whatever future trading agreement we eventually agree to.

It shouldn't work like that. It doesn't in any trade deal the EU currently has.

Up to now there has been no significant increase in the LibDem's popularity - but today there were 4 council by-elections and the LibDems won all 4 - held a seat, won one each from Labour, Tories and UKIP (with 60% of the vote). What has changed? The divorce bill being £50 billion ++ which seems universally falling into the 'not what we voted for'.

False dawn maybe, or maybe a significant shift?

How much would we have to pay for that?

Difficult to answer, but as a comparison Norway paid roughly two thirds of the UK's total contribution ...and the disparity takes into account the rebate.

I believe that Norway paid something like 750 million per year into the EU (not purely to trade) compared to the UK's 9.5 billion (after rebate), however to actually trade the Norwegian figure is probably between 50-100 million of that and the rest is given over to grants and membership of projects such as Erasmus.

Interesting if you look at that per capita:

Norway: 750,000,000 / 5,233,000 = 143.32

UK: 9,500,000,000 / 65,640,000 = 144.73

So, give or take a bit of rounding, and the fact that Google might not be very accurate in terms of population, they're paying the same as us!

I think the figures you present pre rebate are fairly accurate, however and I cant stress this enough the comparison is net for the UK, and Gross for Norway on the figures I am using....in other words there is no calculation for anything Norway may get back (such as research grants etc)

Also the financial figure I am using as Noways financial contribution to trade (100 million) is based on its Efta membership costs and EU internal market functionality payments combined.
