As a fan of this once decent club I recommend he goes down for a very very long time if guilty. I haven't forgotten the fact he punched a woman in the face a while back. Real scumbag. Too many libtards on this forum.

libtard? is that someone who attends checkatrade games?

Even if he is found guilty, I'm willing to back him.

We all knew he had a lot of baggage when we signed him, so this isn't a massive surprise. As long as he doesn't get in trouble whilst playing for Southend (which he hasn't so far), I'll continue to back him. I honestly believe he is a reformed character.

That's a rather healthy and mature attitude.*

I hope you are right.

How the hell has it taken 22 months to get to court? Has the fact that he has now got 'back on his feet' got anything to do with this? What actually is the crime; 'Conspiracy' means to plan something, therefore not actually doing the said crime?

I would love to think he had nothing to do with this, but I have a bad feeling...

I kind of agree, though conspiracy to defraud is still to commit the crime, but with others involved.

That was what I was rather clumsily meaning to say, earlier, which 'Yorksblue' picked me up on.

To conspire to defraud is slightly different to being charged with fraud, as the heading to this thread and original BBC East news stream suggested it was.

Thread heading seems quite clear to me... :winking:

Not sure I get all the 'he should be dismissed if guilty' posts. Its been made very clear by both him and the media that he's had a criminal past, made a lot of mistakes, messed things up over and over again. We took him on knowing all this, on the basis if he could prove he's changed then we'd potentially have a great player we otherwise wouldn't get a sniff of, and he becomes a great example to others of how you can turn your life around.

This alledged offence took place in Feb 2015, which would be a few months after he walked out of Blackpool with his head in a very bad place. It was probably when he was at his lowest point, and most likely to do something stupid. If found guilty, it doesn't mean he hasn't since seen the light & is now back to being a decent human being. Jeeze it was nearly two years ago. If found guilty he'll have to accept his sentance, fair enough. But I don't see why we should drop him given that we knew about his past when we signed him and none of this means he hasn't changed for the better since he did the deed (alledgedly). Unless we no longer give people a second chance in our society of course.

How the hell has it taken 22 months to get to court?

Whilst the offence was 22 months ago, we don't know when:

(a) the vulnerable person realised that they'd been a victim of fraud;
(b) the vulnerable person reported the fraud
(c) Ranger's alleged role in this was discovered
(d) whether charging Ranger would have prejudiced other lines of enquiries and investigations Operation Falcon were conducting

A conspiratory charge by nature of it means "conspire with others", it is also not a substantive charge with times, dates, places etc. It is also used as a blanket "holding" charge that the CPS hope will lead to a plea bargain against a lesser crime or where a conspirator is going to "turn" evidence in a deal against the others involved.
On a positive note it can, as an end result enable evidence to be presented to the court over a wider range of offences and also that often with a group of defendants that some will get convicted and periphery persons acquitted.
What it does show is that in February 2015 Nile was hanging around with some bad persons for sure AND that by playing and working hard with SUFC he is making progress as a worthwhile person.

So, bailed until January 11th, with two others, one of which is charged with an additional crime.

I have no doubt that Ranger has turned the corner. We gave him a chance and so far he has been no trouble at all. His fellow players have been singing his praises. I just hope that this news and possible outcome doesn't undo all of the hard work he's put into sorting his life out. I hate the idea of him being pushed back to his old ways.

I think people who post twice should be hauled before the mods as well.
