Last week I attended a consultation about climate change run by Southend Council. About 20 volunteers were due to participate. Civic duty was my motivation however volunteers would also receive £20 for their time.

It turned out that only two of bothered to turn up. We were also joined at the last minute by two other guys, one who claimed to be homeless and one wearing a grey tracksuit, carrying an Armani dealer bag and sporting various neck tattoos.

I can't blame them for going for an easy £20 but they made zero effort to contribute, ate all of the biscuits and clearly made the organisers very uncomfortable.

That said I did smile at the end of the event when dealer bag guy mentioned to the organisers that he had a couple of mates who would be interested in attending the afternoon session.

The police have said there is no sign of the protestors coming down. So this could now go into a third day and even longer.

In the video on the group’s social media, Morgan, Just Stop Oil protester, said they will stop when the government makes a meaningful statement.

“We just survived our first night up here, I was pretty cold and didn’t sleep much but I am ok.

“We are up here until the government makes a meaningful statement to cancel all new licences for oil and gas extraction because oil and gas is killing us now.

“Now is the moment for civil resistance, come and do what you can in this pivotal moment in history.

“We will stop this disruption when the government cancels all new oil and gas.”

I guess he'll run out of food first?

UPDATE: They're coming down folks. HOORAY! The bad news is, Just Stop Oil have said they will cause more disruption.

The force said the platform would allow specialists to work at height on the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, which links Kent and Essex, and “continue meaningful engagement” with the two climbers.

A Just Stop Oil spokesman has now said: "Morgan and Marcus have agreed to cooperate with police and leave the bridge.

"Just Stop Oil will continue in civil resistance to harmful politics and our criminal government. To protect our rights, freedoms and the rule of law."

Before the announcement, the police revealed it had brought in the platform in a bid to remove the protestors.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "Specialist officers are now in the process of removing two people from height on the Dartford Crossing.

"We will provide an update as soon as we practically can and issue a fuller update later."

In a joint statement released by Just Stop Oil, the two protesters said they "successfully disrupted oil supplies for 36 hours".

The statement says: “We successfully disrupted oil supplies to Kent and the South East for 36 hours and we are stepping down now but other supporters of Just Stop Oil will be stepping up day after day, causing disruption and putting their liberty on the line to demand that the Government ends new oil and gas.”

The Govt and Police need to grow some balls and come down hard on these sort of protesters. (Excuse the Pun).

I expect the police to cone off a lane and allow traffic to flow. I expect them to swiftly remove people glued or otherwise from roads. I expect them to arrest people. It is not peaceful protest.
If the protesters want to win over the public they need to camp outside the Chinese embassy to protest about their use of coal and the building of more and more coal power stations. Still we need our cheap electronics and it seems to me we don't much care about the means by which they are produced or the way they treat some of their citizens.
The UK is actually pretty green compared to a lot of countries.
