Transfer News and Gossip Wa Hoo a genuine transfer RUMOUR

Transfer news
Surely you have to look up for players as well as down?

Don’t forget those we potentially sign from the lower leagues could be seen as “projects” and stepping up into the full time game, so can’t make that immediate impact we require.

I can see a mixture coming in.
None of our experienced EFL players signed this season have made an immediate impact either though. Moncur, Bonne, Walker… Going back further Dunne, Ogogo, Coulson etc.

I think the last experienced EFL player to make an impact on the pitch in a positive way was Arnold who joined way back in 2021. That’s a horrific hit rate.

It’s just as much a project to rebuild a player whose career has gone off the rails as it is to get a part-time player up to speed. Good L1 and L2 players aren’t going to want to drop down to join us unless we overpay and that leaves us with either bad L1 and L2 players or injured players and I don’t have faith in the medical set up to fix broken players.

I’m surprised we seem to be focussing our efforts on the EFL again.

I’d much rather sign someone who has earned a move up the divisions (and I’d classify someone stepping up from u23 football as stepping up) than someone whose play has caused them to move down the divisions. There are always exceptions but it generally seems the better bet. It’s easier to see what a player can do and whether that would work at a higher level than see a struggling player and judge whether what isn’t working currently might work at a lower level.
Maybe the talent isn't there. If the right player isn't available from below then we won't sign anyone!

There’s a third option - signing someone from our division.

I know Sean Adarkwa is a name that has been mentioned. Believe he’s out of contract end of the season and is just getting back to fitness (has come on as sub last few games).

I’m not 100% sure but if he’s out of contract I think we can start speaking to him in January. If we agree a deal with him for next year Wealdstone may be amenable to bringing it forward a few months for a small fee rather than lose him for free in the summer.

A point you make is interesting re good L1 and L2 players aren’t going to want to drop down to join us unless we “overpay”.

Players of a certain standard have a value to their club and themselves. For sure, if we don’t want to pay the going rate (or at least fair rate) for those players then they certainly won’t come. And we are left with the ones you describe. But I suspect it was more because of the late lifting of the embargo than anything else and some decent signings were lost because they wouldn’t wait.

Players are open to moving for all sorts of reasons, and other clubs in the NL have and continue to recruit very well from the EFL all be it, as I suggest, for reasonable fees and/or competitive salaries.

The challenge for COSU is that our professed patience is clearly built on sand and so the quicker route to improving things above may be decided upon (without going mad). Or we just accept we are a mid table side this year, the club closes it ears to said dissatisfaction, and continues to invest in developing the north bank for fans who, increasingly, apparently won’t turn up…

That’s not to discard recruiting from our own division either- but then you don’t want more average players from our division to go with the ones we have. Recruiting other teams top players has a decent cost as well I suspect.

As for the part timers from the leagues below great to develop and for future seasons. Not sure it’s the way to move the dial quickly this..

If he is indeed out of contract this summer then indeed it would be a realistic shout- TBF and I didn’t pick up on it in my last response, where top players in the division are out of contract year end they do represent sensible targets (all be it in many cases we will still be competing with EFL clubs for their signature)

Some players from D1 and D2 who are not getting regular games would be quite willing to join an NL outfit with big potential knowing that they are likely to play regularly. There must be some decent players in the EFL who play in the same position as the clubs star man for instance and therefore can't get a regular game. I am sure we are looking carefully at EFL targets as well as all levels of the non league pyramid.

I think domestically we can only officially speak to a player in the last month of their contract. Obviously we can speak to player’s representatives whenever.

I believe this is just an English FA rule, in Scotland for example you can speak to players in the last six months of their contracts both domestically and internationally.

Correct.

The biggest issue we have with waiting until Jan, is possibly not being as attractive as we could be if we are down near the bottom as opposed to challenging for top 6?

York went out and got Jeff King this month. Brilliant signing at this level. I know they have a bit of money but it would have been less attractive for him to go there had the been where we are right now.

If two clubs come in for a player and one is in the the top 6 and one is down the bottom, it becomes a lot harder for that struggling side to recruit whom they want or had in mind.

If you were a L1 or L2 player blocked by a club’s star man wouldn’t you wait for a sideways move rather than a backward move?

To drop down to NL is a big drop in status and wages.

You can maybe overcome one but to overcome both is really difficult.

1 of which is really good. 1 looks promising and 3 look total rubbish
Pepple is the only one who looks really good so who is the one who looks promising?

At least we are now just the 2nd smallest squad in the league and seem to be content with that despite the clear disadvantages. Not even bringing in more loanees ( Like Pebble ) to bolster our tired looking and energy level struggling outfit. Other clubs seem to have managed to continue to strengthen

Smallest squad by far now is Braintree who have had to trim like mad but of course occupy 19th slot and in a relegation battle and at 16th we are not far off it

Top 10 clubs average squad size is 26.4. At some point COSU are going to have to bite the bigger bullet

Probably be another 4 clubs with bigger cash next time round. We thought it would all be so much easier imagining the opposition this time round, maybe it will always be 4 big guns with the money>? and us the small squad sustained minnows

Southend fans, what’s this Gus fellow like? Looked pretty dreadful last Saturday, however Forest Green rovers are apparently in for him in January and as your consortium have already shown, they’re more than happy to asset strip the club

I wouldn't be surprised if someone came in for Gus in January. I just hope Luton don't decide to recall Aribim Pepple and give him a loan higher up the pyramid.

I bet we do…I bet we spend “undisclosed” fees on one or two as well.
in your posts i trust, you have been spot on so many times. But in Maher im finding it difficult at present to trust that he has the ability to get us out of the dire league, maybe its because of his stubborness to change when it comes to formation and certain players in the squad, yes he may see them everyday in trainingetc ,but no matter even you want them to train how they play it rarely happens , ( maybe in our case it is happening )

I wouldnt mind if someone came in for Gus ,good luck to him ,id wish him well, also it would give WIND a chance ,believe it would strengthen our defence somewhat sd Wind defends better than gus ,also may lead to a change in tactics giving WOOD an opportunity on the RH side or even a change in formation ..

It sounds like we’ll be waiting until January to recruit, seemingly due to targets being at EFL clubs. That could of course go well but in the past it’s been said that, as a NL side without transfer windows, we’re in a position to sign players who maybe didn’t get a move in the summer. But that hasn’t really happened. We’ve seen other clubs act and bring in players until January, Crichlow at Dagenham and Dennis at Rochdale, in two areas that we need improving. I understand waiting and trying to get your man but could or shouldn’t we be looking at alternatives, in the meantime?
