It's fairly well researched that clubs that acquire players early and settle them in achieve a higher league position in the main. Indeed it can make the key difference between good sides when it comes to promotion. I believe this was a key factor why we went up via the play offs rather than automatic promotion. We fluffed around again last year. Ultimately bringing in Coulthirst, Barnard and Weston, via late trials. It took Phil more than half a season to recognise his errors , especially upfront. We do leave it late , no doubt for many reasons already stated, to strengthen the squad.

Weston was signed very early last year (During the World Cup. Italy vs England I believe), as was Barnard.

Where is this research you speak of?

I'd also be interested to see this research you speak of. In my experience the majority of close season deals are done after 1st July, when players actually are not getting paid by their former clubs and so act with greater alacrity. I'm sure Phil would love to have all his squad in place early but in practice, with agents, players, chairmen and managers on holiday throughout June it's never really that simple. Also, we're not a club who can offer around massive salaries to make decisions easier for players. The reality is we'll probably have missed out on a handful of players already, our interest won't necessarily have been made public.

Last year I think most of our business was done in early August and it didn't seem to do us any harm. Coulthirst was always going to come in late as he was a loanee and Premier League teams don't tend to let their young players out until a good pre-season. Weston was indeed brought in during the World Cup and Barnard was signed even earlier.

I believe David Worrall, arguably our best signing last summer, signed on July 23rd.

I think getting people in early where there are a lot of changes is very important as otherwise it disrupts team performance early on.

If you keep the bulk of the squad from the previous season and are introducing only 4-5 players a couple of which you got in early then I think its fine. Shrewsbury for example seem to make a very large number of changes- of course then they have to get people in early or they will be introducing themselves at the first game and it could cost 15 points in the season.

In addition to Wordsworth and Mooney we will probably only have 1 max 2 additional new signings in the side for the first game so even if they come in late the impact will be far less.

Would you mind posting a link to this research?

I think he hasnt even researched his own post :

Barnard was signed about 5 months before, Weston signed mid June and Coulthirst signed 5 days before the first match.

Our forward line was pretty poor until January, but we had signed players with plenty of time.

With the greatest respect...that is absolute guff!

With our connections to Crystal Palace from O'Keefe, JBW, Freedman etc. how about Sullay Kaikai on loan? He scored 5 goals on loan for Cambridge in the second half of last season and he was named Palace's Young Player of the Year. Seems to be quite highly regarded. Could be a good option for a long-term loan.

I see Wycombe have signed Luke O'nien, shame we couldn't have got him, not sure what he's like but he'd have gone down a treat in the burgers.

Apparently i have been informed we are tracking Damian Reeves of Altrincham along with a few other clubs. Sticking point is a fee as he has recently signed a new deal.
