Transfer news
I'll probably get stick for this but the only player we currently have that could possibly work as a target man is Bonne, When we were away to Woking and playing 4-3-3 he was winning everything in the air and we looked dangerous. Miley sent off, Pepple substituted and Walker moved to midfield and he was all on his own, totally ineffective. We got a clean sheet though! Some achievement against the mighty Woking.
Bonne confuses me. He was pretty ineffective at first, then seemed to gain a bit of fitness .. put himself about .. looked a threat alongside Bim. Then he got benched for a couple of games from memory and seemed to lose that momentum. He seems to be struggling again and desperately needs a goal to get going. I think he can win balls in the air and hold it up BUT let's face it he's no Cardwell (*cough). Sorry, couldn't resist but we do need another Cardwell type - as YB says Kendall isn't enough of a unit.

Bonne can flick the ball on in the air but that’s an incredibly low percentage play that rarely finds a Blue shirt. You want someone who can bring the ball down not flick it up in the air. You also want them to be mobile so the balls up to them don’t have to be perfect.

Even Tilly’s sides, which are probably the gold standard for passing football always had a targetman: Gray, Goater, Revell, Harrold, Leon Clarke, Barnard etc.

I agree. Also, sometimes fans automatically assume that because a player is tall, they are a target man. Dackers was better with his ball to feet, so was Acquah and so is Pepple. A true target man is as you've described. We miss that massively and it's why we don't get up the pitch quicker. Cardwell was so good at bringing down the ball, playing it off and moving into the box. A proper number 9.

I wouldnt mind Joe Quigley but suspect no chance even though like Harry CARDWELL he has to accept his fate as a rotating striker between 4 good ones

He was a buy by FGR and its taken him a while to get on the scoresheet indeed 16 appearances, but then bangs in a brace , with the help of Harry, and becomes FA Trophy player of the week

Not sure how mobile he is but 6.3" must help a bit and quite a tough character. Cardwell and Quigley upfront, imagine that

However also helped strikers as FGR play 4-3-3 most of the time and revert occasionally in the trophy to 4-4-2 and have scored 45 goals and only lost twice, strong defence

In fact Looking at the pics of their defensive players is enough to give you nightmares, best to wear blinkers when shaking hands at the start or you may feel a bit apprehensive

If you have only one up front.
Play to the feet not the head.

I agree but I’m trying to stimulate debate from those who say they should. Wondered who people thought were sensible targets who’d want to come to us.
I think we should, absolutely. I'm not up on names though. Fingers crossed the wages saved on moncur and pepple can be directly used and quickly for a replacement

Wonder if we're in for Marcus Wyllie from Gills on a 6 month loan. Doesn't seemed to have played much lately and looked alright for them in pre-season against us. I do recall someone saying we were looking at him before Gills snapped him up in the summer when he was banging them in for fun, albeit at a lower level.

If we are up against football league sides we have no chance. Begs the question as to why we didnt make a move when the transfer window was closed. We have waited untill Jan and now have competition from bigger clubs
Who says we didn't enquire? I'm sure he, and his agent, would've been well aware of any EFL interest and may have decided to not make a move ahead of the window

Dont worry though be patient and wait til Summer ? :Winking:

Slight burst of sarcasm allowed given current frustrations , hopefully new Business soonish this window, although we are traditionally fairly sluggish in the market , including pre-seasons and we have also added the layer of Moneyball man, although in practice that shouldnt take ages surely

Kevs been calling for more in for months, no wonder hes getting a bit shirty, as we reverse once again to struggling to offer 7 on the subs bench in fact with 2 ill we could only provide 5 at best with Walker absent

Paul Clark has some views on this and he’s right. If Bonne is winning balls in the air (which he is) why don’t we have forwards working as a pair, anticipating/gambling on that- service from midfield is negligible, and this is made worse by the lack of anticipation or gambling where the ball is likely to go (also applies re runs into the box, follow up for rebounds etc etc.)

If Bonne wins the ball in the air but his fellow forward is stood there watching and waiting to see where it goes then that needs addressing. I sensed Kendall makes a better partner than anyone else in that respect as he’s always on the move and looking to getting beyond the last man,

Paul Clark talks a lot of sense.

Good observation KB ! Would it also help that and Bonne if we played a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 as FGR use?

Why do you think these players find themselves in the 5th tier? Not having a go. But being sharp mentally is as much a skill and technical and physical. It's frustrating, but they're 5th tier for a reason.
