Transfer news
Not the right comparison to make.

MFW is already at York on loan, so obviously Cardiff don't need to wait until January to decide if they can let him go.

I believe the "undisclosed fee" is also 6 figures. We will not be spending 6-figure transfer fees. We don't have that money.

We are fishing in different pools.

Coming at it from another angle, people have been incredibly patient waiting for the club to be saved, so I'm sure they can be patient a little longer.
Then it's absolutely the right comparison.

They have an excellent loanee with a bright future ahead. They have moved to make a statement signing.

We have an excellent loanee and crowd favourite and he will likely return to his club at the end of the spell.

There is the difference

It isn't. I love Bim, but I don't think he'd be a "statement signing" in the way that MFW is, and - again - we don't have the money to make a statement signing in the mould of MFW.

If Bim returns at the end of his loan spell, it will be because Luton don't want to sell him, or because we can't afford what it would take to sign him permanently. Or because Bim himself doesn't want to stay!

I'm struggling to see what's difficult to grasp about that. What am I missing?

Just repeating what I was told first hand.

Maher may well have wanted him but this was from a 100% reliable source so someone at the club didn’t feel the same…..

This thing of 'we should sign Bim' (or whoever) does make me laugh. Such simplistic thinking.

The selling club need to be willing to sell to us. They need to be ready to let the player go. If they see potential there, they likely won't sell. If they see themselves dropping a level and might need to cut their cloth, again, they might think the player might be of use to them as perhaps a squad player.

The buying club need to be able to match the asking price (if there's a fee involved) and ready to meet the player's personal demands. As we know, we're not shopping in Waitrose.

Then, the player needs to want to make the move to Southend, perhaps physically moving closer to the club. Some will have family to consider. Finances of moving to more expensive part of the country. In so.e cases, the player also needs to be willing to drop to the NL. In Bim's case, moving family probably won't be an issue and he's shifted between the UK and Canada, so is used to a pretty nomadic lifestyle. He's also making good noises about our club and fans. He seems happy here. However, football is a career for him, so he'd need to consider an offer carefully (if it gets to that stage).

I like Bim, but like you, Medway, I wouldn't see him as a statement signing like MFW.

I feel like Bim is going to get recalled and then sent out on loan to a higher level.

He’s good and would be decent if we could sign him on a permanent basis. However, there are concerns, why can he only last 60 minutes? Not really a statement signing if he has to be dragged off after 60 minutes every game.

Great player, great bloke, would be a great signing. Just can’t see it happening.

Deals are always there to be done though, we managed to strike a deal to get Lopata when we didn’t have a pot to **** in!

We signed Lopata under very different circumstances and approach to the (mis)management of club finances. I mean, wages aren't much of an issue if you don't care about actually paying them.

What I was edging my point towards was you don’t always need six figure transfer fees. My understanding is that Lopata’s deal was heavily weighted towards selling on fees etc. Deals can be made where there isn’t such a high transfer fee but incentive weighted on appearances/promotion/sell on fees.

His wages are probably the sticking point. I’d be intrigued to know what sort of money he is on at Luton.

Here are some of the salaries for Luton Town Football Club players:

  • Jacob Brown, Marvelous Nakamba, and Tahith Chong: These three players are tied as the club's highest paid, with a weekly wage of £30,000
  • Andros Townsend: Earns £20,000 per week
  • Elijah Adebayo and Reece Burke: Both earn £12,500 per week
  • Aribim Pepple: Earns £1,000 per week
  • Thomas Kaminski: Earns £1,300,000 annually
  • Tom Lockyer: Earns £420,000 annually
  • Mark McGuinness: Earns £20,000 per week
  • Tom Krauß: Earns £22,500 per week
  • Shandon Baptiste, Tim Krul, and Thomas Kaminski: All earn £25,000 per week

If that is true, we can surely afford him or am I being deluded and our players are on less than that? £1k a week I’d expect someone like Husin/Crowther to be on.

What's the source for this? It seems to match capology which has had some criticism for being too simplistic by not including bonuses etc.

If Bim was on £52k basic with a £500 appearance fee and £200 goal bonus that takes his total so far this season just in the league to an additional £9k per year if he doesn't play another game.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't sign him up,but at that cost are better options available?

Mind you I continue to be amazed by how much players in the 5th tier of English football get paid. Mind you quite contradictory I'm also amazed that people would take on a short career with poor future earnings for such little money.

Perhaps one for another thread is just how do players at this level prepare for a life after football

Bim hasn't even played for Luton.

He isn't a first team player. He isn't even listed as a first team player.

He is a reserve player that is highly unlikely to ever play for Luton Town.

Heres another perhaps challenging thought ?

IF like 2 of the top 3 teams you bring in 10 loanees each presumably you have been quite adventurous? What if the costs of a significant number of them is actually a shared cost as a loan ? Yes there may be caveats attached to the loan, but cant be to all of them or else you would for example have to play all 10 loanees weekly and that is not allowed anyway

Then, What if having taken the plunge on the 10, FIVE Turn out to have real potential, or are even GEMS that then contribute strongly towards propelling you into the top 3 You have certainly got to have had a good look at a wide range of talent

What if you then stood a good chance of at least buying 4 of them?

Running different pilot projects does not always in my Managerial experience have to cost a bomb to gain success?

I can't remember of the top of my head but there's a limit on loanees. Think it's 4 long term ones at once

Yes you are right there are limits. Limits to the number you can play in one game for example ,However in terms of the numbers in a squad the regs vary and especially around Under 21s where these t current league leader clubs have also done quite a bit of fishing

However limits or otherwise its pretty clear that a good chunk of their success has been about being bold in the loanee market

I personally think, like with a lot of things in life, it’s about balance. I think if, as a manager, you construct a side which is reliant on loan players then you may get lots of additional quality into the team. If you get lucky/do your research then you may even drag your team into promotion contention and go up. But come the summer your side will be completely dismantled and you’d need to start from scratch again - in a tougher division.

Or you could build the spine of your side with permanent players and have a sprinkling of loan players in certain positions. You’d have fewer players to choose from in the transfer market as out of contract players of real quality would be highly sought after. And getting players that could play at higher levels to commit to permanent deals in our league may be more difficult than it could be to sort a loan. But if you hit the perfect balance then you’ve got a higher percentage of the side signed up for following years should the side go up.

I think in the lower divisions (up to maybe mid-table League One) success is achieved either from throwing money at it like Wrexham, Chesterfield etc have done in recent seasons. Or having great success through effective scouting.

Thats very fair and potent points about the balance and a view that I share. However we tend to be a little to shy and conservative on the loan front. Kev alegedly has never been a great fan and prefers a smaller outfit we are told. Although for the first time in what feels like ages he has been pleading for more and acknowledging a small squad

However the top teams are going for Big squads, 28 or 29. They are bringing in 10 loanees and 12 free transfers So thats a point of difference. They wont have to have a complete re build if they retainna goodly chunk of their free transfers, theres alsoa good chance they7 will snap up some of the ten loanees

Also If needs be they can also take the gamble of another 10 loanees next year and see what they like of them

We have Moncur, Pepple, Jeacock, Golding all on loan (plus Foran earlier on this season).

We clearly are using the loan market.

However the loan market is a gamble because if you sign a hit their club will likely recall them in January (Pepple) or not extend them (Kanu, Hayes), if you don’t use them their club will recall them (Foran, Jeacock and Golding?) and players who their club don’t want may not be committed (Moncur).

Our issue is that we’re trying to replace our spine. You want your own players as your spine and then fit loanees around them.

Probably didn't want to cop the same flak he copped when he made similar signings like Bonne and Moncur.

It’s 100% not true.

I’m told, from the Pearce camp, that he had agreed terms with us and wanted us but didn’t want to wait for the embargo to finish as there was guarantees on when that would be.

York swooped in, due to the manager, and snagged him very quickly.
