"The Sulphurites have paid an undisclosed fee to sixth-tier Ilkeston to secure the services of the free-scoring 23-year-old, who has netted 25 goals in 30 appearances so far this season, including a nine-minute hat-trick.
His fine form in front of goal in 2024/25 follows on from a superb end to the previous campaign, where he bagged 12 times in just 10 matches. Those exploits have attracted interest from a number of League One and Two sides, with Derby County, Bolton Wanderers, Peterborough United, Barnsley and Chesterfield all reportedly keen on Cursons."
I really don't know what gets into these young players..............obviously his agent has turned his head. Seriously, how can you turn down a move to an 'ambitious,' lower middle-table National League side, miles away from where you're settled, in favour of one of the group of no-hoper (should it be Hopper?) league clubs mentioned above? Bide my words, he'll live to regret not advancing his career by moving to the Essex Riviera.

There’s one other criteria I’d add which is mobile. Not sure if that’s still the case though…

We need exactly the kind of forward Hopper was.

Actually what this team misses more than a creative midfielder is a targetman. Someone who can hold the ball up, win headers, press from the front.

If you add one of those it makes everyone else better. They are the glue that holds a side together. They help defensively - by pressing, by relieving pressure, at set pieces; they help the midfield - by providing an outlet, by linking play, by winning the ball higher up the field; and they help their strike partner - by occupying defenders, doing the dirty work, creating chances.

The player Hopper was would immediately transform the current team into a playoff contender. How well he can still run the channels, how effectively he can still press etc is another matter though.

I’d expect he’ll improve our defending at set pieces (which is two-thirds of the goals we’ve been conceding of late); he should improve our attack by meaning we don’t have to play Bonne. Hopefully he’ll set the example with workrate and energy that will rub off on everyone. A front duo of Hopper and Kendall would be horrible to play against, not giving defenders a moment’s respite. That’s an important part of our identity that was lost when we effectively swapped Cardwell for Bonne.

The smart thing to do isn’t to go looking for a goalscorer but to look at how you can get your existing players to fire. Kendall, Walker, Waldron have scored goals at previous stops. We’d all be super excited if we were signing Kendall from Eastbourne, Walker from Daggers. We need to get them back to that form. Fingers crossed Hopper can help with that. I’m not sure if Hopper can still do that but it’s a step in the right direction.
Yes good analysis. It appears he still does all those things according to the Col U guys so as your analysis explains hopefully just what we need.

The negativity is extraordinary. Whinging and whining about every possible signing. Here we have a player highly regarded by his current manager and supporters at a L2 club that provides a hard working, high press, target man down the middle and its simply not good enough. If we fantasise we are going to sign anyone from the EFL with a decent current scoring record then we need to wake up. We dont have the money to compete. COSU want value.

Likewise if we think we can sign any top striker from our current division who is scoring regular the same applies. COSU want value.

Probably our chances of getting Tom Hopper would be zero if it weren't for the stage he is at in his career. And he is very local.

The only way we will afford a striker that scores goals is to get one that doesn't until he is with us (a la Corr). Or take a risk on someone who scores in the leagues below- but unfortunately oth NL and EFL clubs are looking to do the same and are offering more....

So if we bring him in we will have a target up top that will work his socks off, hold the ball up, get us on the front foot and create a few and at this level probably score a few as well.

BTW the injury prone barb is another alternative fact. As the Col guys have pointed out he is fit with no major injury worries- nothing significant this season, last season one groin injury kept him out for 5 games, and season before that with Col U nothing to speak of (the Col guys will correct me if Im wrong).
Great post

I think people remember when he got injured here and he was out of action for a year. Most of his long term injuries were as a result of tackles (his injury when with us, discloated shoulder at Scunthorpe etc)

Other than 2 months out in the last 2 years for a groin issue i see no issues (famous last words)

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but it is becoming unreadable. Constantly having to skip over the same issue and comment on every thread.

I come on to look at transfer rumours for example, not hear how the same people think Maher plays sideways football.

For the record I am happy for people to have differing opinions but they don’t need to be voiced on every single thread.
Utopia for us if that were possible. We do try to keep things to relevant threads but are not always on here to move posts and before you know it a Thread has run off course. Umpteen times Mods have pointed out in this thread. Keep it to Transfer gossip alas we ofter fail and people take no notice.

I'd be surprised if Hopper would agree to a deal until end of season - he already has that at Col U. What's in it for him to move for a short term deal?
First team football - I'd guess if he makes the move he'll want some assurances he'll be starting, if fit.
Plus he's probably figured that a move means he won't have to play for Col U any more?

Thanks heavens there's still some positivity and ability to see the bigger picture on here.

Further to these two excellent posts I'd like to add that Kendall and Waldron are both proven goalscorers at a lower level, we just need to unlock that with better service. I don't understand the clamour to add another from many levels below (Striker from Brentwood) when we already have two of a similar ilk?

Simply location and the opportunity to put himself in the shop window in terms of earning a contract for next season.
He'll be picking up the same wage between now and June whether he comes to us or stays put.

One of Anifowose’s strongest attributes is his ball carrying and his power.

His ability to almost bully the opposition whilst using his strength to retain the ball is a standout attribute to his game, but for a strong player is equally as slick.

In using his strength to his advantage, it can often lead to him being fouled often with the ball at his feet,
Anifowose is a player I would describe as capable in both boxes.

He rarely doesn’t commit to a challenge, whilst his work rate compliments his ability to win the ball in defensive areas, as well as up the field in a press also ,
His wide range of distribution varies from early deliveries into the box, to defence splitting passes,
The mention of his ability to cross early also highlights his ability to drift wide when in possession, finding pockets of space between the winger and full-back

In doing this, it can also drag an opposition midfielder out wide , creating excess space for his midfield partner to make an infield run ,

Sounds exactly what our midfield needs . Get him in
