A squad of just 22 was not uncommon for us to struggle with. Even if I include Demetriou and Martin we currently only have a squad of 18 before anyone leaves. If both no longer officially in the named squad going forward that brings us down to not being able to name 7 subs

So to get anywhere near just the average size of recent squads in the Nat League and cope with the new 7 subs plan, we probably need toi bring in a minimum of 10. We have of course just let 3 loanees return to their parent clubs.

, Again in this area we tend to have less loanees over a season than other clubs, You can argue the benefits either way, but if we are aiming to reduce the budget we may need to travel more in this direction. We could manage 4 or 5 loanees if necessary to reduce wage costs, otherwise got to pick up some real cheap bargains ?

The top 10 clubs at one point carried a minimum of 28 players, So if we are going to be tighter on the budget, that will take some skill otherwise life will be tougher. Thats not to say you cant gain promotion with a small squad, the odds just lesson, especially against those with a squad of 34

How many were in the squad when we got back-to-back promotions under Tilson?

Was there 7 subs 5 to bring on?

I was asking a question….

Just because we can, doesn’t mean we will.

Having 7 subs increases the cost of everything. Travel, accommodation, pre & post match meals etc. don’t forget, teams won’t just take 18 players, they’ll have at least one in case of emergency.

I like the 7 subs, I don’t like the fact you can bring in 5 at 5 separate intervals as it stands at the moment.

Just thinking out loud; now that the National League has deemed seven subs can be named and five can be used within a game, I wonder whether a few more specialist players will be looked at rather than jack-of-all trades when only five can be used.

Would imagine three forward players would be named - slightly bigger, more specialised squad for next year? Maybe?
I suspect 1 sub will be a keeper, which most teams will already have in the squad even if they haven't been on the bench - so it's only really 1 more player in the match day squad. Although I'd agree probably less need for utility players.

I trust you noted that I did specifically say you could gain promotion with a small squad which of course makes Tillys era exceptional, but not so common

A sizable squad offers managers the tactical flexibility to adapt to different opponents, formations, and game situations. able to rotate to sustain peak performance in the main, especially during congested periods.

Injuries are an inherent part of football, it did for Chris Powell, and a deep squad helps mitigate the impact of losing key players. Having capable replacements in each position at a minimum, reduces the risk of a single injury disrupting the team's rhythm and ambitions. Clubs with extensive squads can still field a competitive team even when dealing with a series of injuries and a long run of congested fixtures

Equally do you think it pure coincidence that the top teams even at Nat League level tend to have larger squads

Would we have been in the play offs if we could have had 4 more players on the go ?

I appreciate your point about the extra costs of course and equally the prospect of bringing on 5 I dont like at all

not sure if he is on the whiteboard but Jermaine Francis has turned down a new contract and left Chelmsford to sign for a club in a higher division 🧐

From London shrimper on X -
Looks like Barnet have won the race to sign Jermaine Francis ✍🏼

Made the NL South playoffs with Chelmsford in a great breakout season - double digits in goals & assists.

Francis was on trial at Barnet last year - just shows what a season of playing regular football can do 👏🏼
