SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher will look to sign a defender on loan ahead of Tuesday night’s match with Wealdstone.

The Shrimpers currently have just three centre-backs available for the National League clash at Roots Hall with Harry Taylor and Ollie Kensdale both still sidelined with injuries.
And Maher will aim to bolster his options if possible.

“It’s always tough but we will look to see if there’s someone to bring in to add to what we’ve got,” said Maher.

“It’s an area we’re a touch short in so if there is then we definitely will.”

Kensdale has missed the last two matches with a fractured cheekbone while Taylor has been out with a hamstring issue he suffered against Gateshead in early February.

“He’s (Taylor) doing some running with the medical team,” said Maher.

“That will continue this week and he’s getting closer.”

We are in talks with a couple of centre halfs at EFL clubs.

Also, a defender we have earmarked for the summer, we have looked at seeing if we can bring that forward, but not sure that one will happen.

That cut looked really nasty, so not surprised it is a fracture. Poor Kensdale, that must be really painful as well. Fingers crossed he recovers soon.

Yep. We certainly need an experienced no.9 like McCallum and/or someone you can put your house on bagging 20 goals. Kabamba, Dinanga, or a punt on Pearce at Worthing?
Would love to see us go for Pearce if Worthing fail to win promotion. 33 goals in 33 appearances so far down there this season, and 24 in 46 last season. Only slight mark against him is he'll be 29 when next season starts, so probably in the latter half of his prime years.

Be nice if we were, as the two chances Oldham have when they carved us open down the middle were avoidable with players used to playing CB.

By no means am I having a go at Demi, he's been brilliant over the last three games, but Saturday/Tuesday must be telling on him and I would prefer cover that is a genuine CB if we are able to get someone in.

Having 2 centre backs injured is not ideal but I don't think we are 'desperate'. We have proved many times this season that the players can adapt and play in various positions if necessary.

It’s a shame that Brooklyn left when he did as there would have been plenty of game time for him during this period. I thought we dealt really well with the Alty attack last Tuesday and I think it helped they didn’t have loads of huge lumps and they tried to play football which worked for us with Ralph and Demi at the back. We may come unstuck against more “direct” sides.
