Perhaps George could write a poem asking young black men to stop joining gangs and to stop stabbing and shooting each other, that way not so many young black men would be stopped and searched. Just a thought.
and perhaps we could address the poverty and lack of opportunity in those areas, it's a vicious circle and not down to race. The same issues occur in Glasgow's poor estates and you don't see many black faces there.Perhaps George could write a poem asking young black men to stop joining gangs and to stop stabbing and shooting each other, that way not so many young black men would be stopped and searched. Not sure Glasgow have anywhere near the knife and gun crime that London has. Stick your head up your backside and call me racist all you want but the issue is predominately with young black males. They are carrying knives and they are using them. This is the reason young black males are being stopped and searched more than young white and asian males.
I come from a poor background and was without a father from the age of eleven. I never carried a knife or turned to crime.
I’d also bet there is damn more opportunities now than when I was growing up.
Well said Sir, trouble is everyone has to tread on eggshells now, frightened to be labelled racist if they state the blindingly obvious. This issue is 99% about drugs, both their use and sale. The genius whoever sorts that out will go a huge way to solving the problem. Not sure Glasgow have anywhere near the knife and gun crime that London has. And perhaps as a society we could provide some meaningful employment for young black people? Other ,that is, than selling drugs, which might eliminate their perceived need for knives and guns as protection. "That way not so many young black men would be stopped and searched.Just a thought".
The thing is I haven't called anyone a racist. I have agreed that in London knife crime is predominantly carried out by black youths. I have also put Glasgow forward (as it is relatively close) as an example of why this is not about race and about poverty. I could have put forward Naples or other world cities where gun/knife crime is rife and not predominantly carried out by black youths. Society provides jobs for black and white - you seriously suggesting selling drugs is the only career path open to young black men? What utter bollocks - even for you.
What I am suggesting is that there is serious research evidence, which documents that young black men obtain fewer academic qualifications and are more often subjected to stop and search procedures than their white male counterparts.
Stop and search I’ve answered. Academic achievement I imagine is largely for the same reasons. We all have to make important choices in life and the saying the pen is mightier than the sword I think is rather apt in this instance.
You make some valid points but I would argue it is about poverty. I don't think it is a coincidence that black youths in the poorest parts of London, white youths in the poorest parts of Glasgow and Italian youths in the poorest parts of Naples make up the majority of people picking this lifestyle choiceMmmm.... not so sure it's about race and poverty, more about a lifestyle choice. My last few years of work involved taking a frighteningly large number of young, black males to gaol. I made a point of getting to talk to them one-to-one as often as I could and surprise, surprise - barring the odd exception - they were all good lads at heart. However, they'd near enough all chosen the lifestyle of crime - gangs, drugs, robbery etc. as an easy way to get money. And of course, peer pressure played a part. I'm probably going off topic here but it appeared to me that once they'd got caught up in a gang - it was game over for them. And they didn't care ! Such a waste. This was in south-east London where if broken down, a third were ybm's, a third eastern European, final third all others.
Maybe not now but certainly back in the 70's and before Glasgow was infamous for knife and gun crime in white gangs.
If you're talking about "opportunities" for zero hour contract work and "Mac". jobs then you're probably right
You might have answered it to your satisfaction, not to mine.
Not really sure what point you're making about academic achievement. There can be little doubt however, that the educational system works less well for young black men than it does for their white male counterparts.
