If he was going to give his shares away, why hinder the potential deal? What's he hoping to achieve?

No judgement, no right or wrong stance from me on this, just a simple observation, would you really want to be, at this late stage, seen as being responsible for causing further delay or indeed possibly jeopardising the takeover? I thought it would be near on impossible for anyone to eclipse the in the unpopularity stakes, but that might just make him a contender!
