SUFC: The Future The regeneration of Roots Hall

Our hopes and visions for the rebirth of Southend United, plus any plans published by the consortium for discussion
I'd like to keep the barrel roof, or a modern reincarnation of it. It's one of the things that gives RH its... identity? or character?

yes, but the problem with a barrel type roof is it does not project the sound out onto the pitch as well,
The barrels tend to through the vocals back down into the stand.

but all the same it would be nice for Rootshall to have her own identity, and be just be like all the other grounds.

I've been on the pitch with 9k in attendance....Trust me it's loud

Depends how high the roof is as well as shape. Charlton is good example for keeping sound in as the roof is very low when your at the back of the stand.

I feel like there's multiple stages at play here. For the N/S/W it'll be a case of implementing the core basics needed, e.g. tidying up and maybe laying concrete over the existing foundations as @Sherif H mentioned. Then if the £20m comes in at some point maybe the idea of re-roofing the West to remove the polls might be doable as a phase two?

The tricky part is the East, as that needs demolishing and rebuilding, would we wait until the £20m comes in, or go ahead and hope that £20m comes in down the line? You can't really do that one in stages I'd have thought, and if you could the majority of the work would be in phase one.

Whatever happens in the re development I feel the main priority is to have a very large area to facilitate hospitality and other non match day revenue streams. There is plenty of room on the Roots Hall site even if it means losing much of the car park. Most clubs have a much smaller parking area than us. Even a capacity less than 15k should be adequate. If you go up the leagues the TV money and other revenues usually compensate for selling less match day tickets. Bournemouth is a good example. It's refreshing that we are having this debate rather than discussing you know who.

I want something that looks like this. If this new consortium can't deliver, then I'm going to quickly lose faith

$750m in “public funding” paid for (half of) that.

I can’t imagine the residents of Southend going along with that (not that many Nevadans were happy with it either)

Also, Imagine that poor Arsenal fan who lives in the flats behind the South Stand. A double blow for him, having to cough up money for an even bigger nuisance to him. Won’t someone please think of the Arsenal fan?

When my firm ran the ticket purchase demand for that stadium we thought we had totally taken the **** on the prices we were simulating. Turned out we were wrong, they basically could charge whatever they wanted.

I don't know if they ever did get round to it, but when I went there last year for a visit MGM had a massive superbox and were going to stick tables in there to get the high rollers who they were entertaining out of the casinos and doing a bit more gambling.

It's a mental stadium.

With regard to making the match day experience better at Roots Hall, as many have mentioned, putting a marquee up in the car park would be a good revenue source.
I was at Newport County v Harrogate yesterday. They have a big marquee there, inside were two large bars with a decent selection of beers, lots of tables and seating. They had kids entertainment including a q and a with some of the Newport players. Amazingly they also had a live rock band. Surely we could do something similar especially with the decent attendances that we get.

Scunthorpe had a similar thing last season ,music, beers and I think from memory a hog roast. We could use something like this and possibly use it during the week for communal activities, open Mike sessions etc .
