The Olympics thread

She missed 3 tests, yes, but there was no evidence of her taking drugs.

Bloody useless memory to forget three times in a ro though.

Another gold for team GB! Ian Percy & Andrew Simons win gold in the sailing Star race...Whooo!

Plus a silver for David Davies in the 10k Open water swim. :)

I am going towards the being banned for missing three drugs tests. Otherwise drugs cheats would just keep missing the tests.

I certainly agree with a ban - the IAAF banned Ohuruogu her for a year. I'd be inclined to lean towards a longer ban though. Four years for missing your tests, eight for failing them?

Also what are peoples thoughts on which records will last the longest. I certainly think in the mens, the long jump and especially the triple jump (with our own Edwards) will last a long long time. And the womens, god knows.

And on a less serious note, I would do both Kelly and Victoria at the same time, although Kelly strikes me as a bit dense, and she supports Arsenal.

As you say, that triple jump one will take some beating - that was a Beamon-esque performance by Edwards in 1995. 18.29 is far beyond what the top guys nowadays are doing. Whoever wins today (hopefully Idowu!) will probably win gold with something in the region of 17.60.

In the women's pole vault Isinbayeva has the potential to get the record to a silly level and keep hold of that for an age too. No one is getting close to Bubka's record for the men's pole vault either.

Re Sotherton and Pendleton, I would have to concur.

That BBC reporter got ever so slightly excited didn't he? Have to admit I find it almost impossible to follow what's going on in the sailing but fair play to 'em.

The bizarre modern pentathlon described. As a bridge between the ancient Olympics and the modern, it's a form of "story" where the competitor;

1) Rides his horse in battle but falls off.
2) Has to defend himself with a gun.
3) And a sword (fencing).
4) Swims across a river to escape.
5) And finally runs (like Marathon) to deliver a message.

I feel so much relieved!

On a personal note, Johnson was one of my all time favourites and I would like the 400m record to stand for a bit longer, even thought his 200m was probably more impressive.

On that point, watching the BBC highlights of the 200m last night, Michael Johnson showed what a thoroughly articulate and modest guy he is. Despite the grating Gabby Yorath's provacation, Johnson seemed to genuinly not mind his great record being broken, and shows a real enthusiasm and fair view of modern athletics (as opposed to the 'it was better in my day' view that some show ...Brendan Foster?....).

I find him to be an excellent commentator and well done to the BBC for signing him up. (Though I do sometimes get the feeling that Colin Jackson may be eyeing him up....).

Also, they showed the 96 and 2008 races side by side as well, and its a shame Johnson didnt dip a bit more at the line, or he may still have his record for now :)

On a more serious note, think always found Kelly Sotherton's performances compelling viewing....

Breaking news: 4 horses in the show jumping have tested positive for banned substances which could affect the medal table....

they've been eating freaky carrots

Horses involved: Brazil, Norway, Ireland and Germany.

Norway will lose Bronze and Switzerland will medal up. USA will also lose a gold (somehow?) and Canada will now get the gold.

For me, Michael Johnson is one of the best pundits on telly and that's across all sports. Tells it like it is, doesn't make excuses for failing athletes and has the gravitas because he's done it all at the very highest level.

The 10km swimming was compelling viewing.

Davies would probably have won if he could have swum in a straight line.

That is one brutal event. Apparently Davies was delirious at the end and I'm not surprised. Swimming 10km in water hotter than the pool? Ouch.
