The Olympics thread

Michael Johnson is my hero. That was absolutely amazing.

A 12 year old world record by one of the greatest athletes ever beaten INTO the wind.

agreed... i thought his 200m would last for many more years... anyone hope that bolt steps up to the 400m and breaks that!

nah i didn't... i predicted both the new WR and the time for the 100m in the chatroom on saturday

malcolm was in there until the last 50m

Ladbrokes were betting on whether the record would be broken and we opened at 25/1. We've been burnt to say the least!

Yup, she's managed to attract quite a bit of attention in the office this afternoon!

Perhaps we could give out Gold, Silver & Bronze to the best looking UK womens athletes. Gail Emms could be a contender for gold IMHO.

I have just been looking at the world records. Now a lot of the mens records are newish. Obviously helps with both the sprints being broken in the last week.
I think it helps as they have been a lot of great male athletes. Johnson, Kipketer, El Guerrouj, etc. Obv a few notable exceptions like the Long Jump record, and most of the throws.

But the womens records, save, oddly enough a few of the throws have been around for ages. Now I am too young to remember Flo Jo but how can it be that no one i nthe last 20 years has even come close to the record. Even Marion Jones was miles away.

Also what are peoples thoughts on which records will last the longest. I certainly think in the mens, the long jump and especially the triple jump (with our own Edwards) will last a long long time. And the womens, god knows.

On a personal note, Johnson was one of my all time favourites and I would like the 400m record to stand for a bit longer, even thought his 200m was probably more impressive. I also hopes Wilson Kipketers records stands for a while as he was the first real big athlete that I remember that ran for a totally different country for his birth and in my young days I thought that was funny. (now it is something I really don't like)

And on a less serious note, I would do both Kelly and Victoria at the same time, although Kelly strikes me as a bit dense, and she supports Arsenal.

Some records in the mens division really do stand the test of time, Beamon's Long Jump WR in Mexico 1968 stood until Mike Powell took it over 20 years later in Tokyo. Similarly Lee Evans won the 400m in Mexico in 43.8(ish) this stood for years, I think Butch Reynolds beat it but his records were deleted because of drug misuse IIRC, and the Evans mark wasn't beaten until Michael Johnson took it in 1999. I think these two and the WR of Wilson Kipketer in the 800m could stand for many years to come.

Flo-Jo died quite young and it was thought her early demise may have been down to a chemical cocktail it is alleged she took. It is interesting to see the 47.6 set by Marita Koch in the 400m still stands along with the 800m record set by Kratochvilova 25 years ago. There is more than enough evidence that the East German athletes were drug fuelled, and Kratochvilova bore more than a passing resemblance to Andy Townsend.

IMO there is more than enough doubt about these "records" for them to still stand and I would like to see the IAAF or whatever authority expunge these from the record book, because as it stands they are unlikely to be beaten.

I did look at the nationalities of the athletes and have second thoughts about how good they were. I had also read somewhere about the doubts of Flo Jo's cleanliness.

Which is a pity as there aren't many outstanding women athletes around at the moment.
Carolina Kluft is a VERY good heptathlete (in that if she competes the rest of the athletes might as well just compete for second).

Isenbiyava (pretty sure that is spelt wrong) would probably fit into this catergory at the moment.

Unfortunately that is probably about it.
I still miss the old days (my old days aren't very old) of Steve Backley, Colin Jackson, Jonathen Edwards, Linford Christie. Although we did very badly for various reasons the 1996 games was definately my favourite (if i forget my British loyalties for one second)
