The Olympics thread

Now I am not a big fan of the Americans but you have to feel sorry for Lolo whatever her name is when she hit the second to last hurdle when easily on the way to the win in the 100m hurdles final. O well only another four years to wait for another chance.

Just looked on the bbc and we only won 15 medals in total in the 1996 games at Atlanta. Hae outdone that in gold alone this games. Surely in relation to population size we must be top of the table?

Another silver and bronze in the open water swim for Kerry Ann Payne and Cassie Patten, missing the gold by a gnats ****. And a bronze in the ladies Windsurfing too for Bryony Shaw.

Lol, dunno mate did she have a swear?

Watching the BMX is great! Scary as hell ...great 2nd ride by Shanaze Reade after a crash in the first.

I think our convict cousins may have something to say about that.

New Zealand must be up there too. They've got three golds and there's only about four million of them. Most of whom were in Shepherd's Bush last time I was down that way.

It's often surprised me that South Africa are so crap when it comes to the Olympics. Only one silver so far. What a bleddy ahtrage.

Do Saaf Affrikka have a ''quota'' policy for their olympic team as they do for their cricket team?

Did you see the Aussies comment on the telly last night. "The Brits only win in events where they can sit down" rather funny I thought.

Interesting article by Oliver Holt in todays Mirror about Ohurugou . Again it prompts the debate again about drugs cheats and the message about avoiding testing appears to be ok There are two others in the GB team ( A triathlete and Judoka competitor) who missed 3 tests and got thier bans over turned.
I liked his comment "If she'd have shown that turn of speed to get to Stratford Station in June 2006 she would not have missed the drugs test"

Key difference of course being that she missed a test rather than fail one. She certainly deserved a ban for her stupidity, but a lifetime one would have been harsh. Holt's had a bee in his bonnet about Ohuruogu for ages. To be fair, she doesn't help herself by acting the victim over the whole thing - her lack of contrition is a bit galling.

Actually she missed three tests I believe. Now I am not accusing her but surely some of the people who constantly miss the tests are because they are guilty and would fail?

You're right of course - a mistake on my part.

It's widely though that the Greek athletes Kenteris and Thanou deliberately missed tests in 2004 for fear of getting caught. There has to be punishment for those who miss tests, but I don't think it should be as severe as actually failing one.

Of course it has to be as severe as actually failing one, otherwise the drugs cheats would just avoid the tests and then reap the benefits of their drug enhanced training.

With the strict liability athletes have to prove their innocence, rather than have it assumed.

I agree with you. The Greek thing was very suspcious as they missed the test they faked a motorbike crash to cover it up. However who is to say that had Christine been there for that test she would not have failed one of them. (I hope not). If I was an athlete who had been taking drugs I would just miss my tests, take the year ban or whatever and come back. I believe I am right in saying athletes get letters sent to them warning of the upcoming tests and that they have to let the BOA, IOC, IAAF etc know where they are at all times.

So do you think Ohuruogu should have been banned from the Olympics?

I think that's about right, I suppose there will always be a doubt about Ohurugou because of the missed tests, but she has served her ban, and is almost certainly running clean.

I've just seen that the Ukranian who won silver in the heptahlon has failed a drugs test.
