The EU Referendum

How are you voting?

  • Leave

    Votes: 58 56.3%
  • Remain

    Votes: 45 43.7%

  • Total voters
    103
  • Poll closed .
You don't know anything about me so do be so presumptuous and patronising. Pensioners should be prepared to bare the impact of the consequences of their vote - just like the rest of us.

I already get a work pension and I may be gambling with that , however for me it is a Leave on too many issues that have a greater importance than money. Every choice has consequences.

And you are a young pup thinks he knows it all. so that makes us even IMO.

Got my first Vote Leave literature through the post today and emblazoned on the front it says 'We send the EU £350m a week - lets fund our NHS instead' - to which I thought 'no we don't and no you wouldn't'.
If your main slogan is two lies where do you go from there?

This lad does a good job of highlighting a valid point in that nobody has actually considered the risks for staying in the EU

http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/680294/Question-Time-BBC-Michael-Gove-Brexit-EU-referendum

as reluctant as I am to read anything in the Express I gave it a go. So his points were:

"Are we going to get sucked into the Schengen area? Are we going to get punished if we don’t join the Euro? Will Turkey join the EU?"

the answers are:

Schengen - No - because no UK government would want to and could not be made to.

Punished for not joining the Euro - No, where did he dream that up? It's been in operation for 17 years, why would we be punished now?

Turkey - Unlikely as there are far to many obstacles and its unlikely to get the backing of all current members.

If those are his fears then he is a very jumpy young man and I recommend he reads one of those mindfulness books to calm his temperament.

No, you're right. It's a slightly misleading figure. It's actually £250m a week, or £1bn a month or £52bn a year if you prefer. But don't take my word for it.

https://fullfact.org/europe/our-eu-membership-fee-55-million/

That's a lot of money to spend elsewhere her in the UK whichever way you want to cut it up.

Or..................after EU spending in the UK, which varies from year to year, which is why it's not generally considered in the calculation figures - £8.5bn paid in, or £23m a day in 2015.

A very good and reliable source.

My 87 yr old mum said that she wouldn't be voting - I had to convince her, for the sake of her grandchildren & great grandchildren to get down the polling station. My dad, if he was still with us, wouldn't be happy at her malaise.

Obviously she must be voting out. Well done to your old mum.

If the link works then the story you read will put a different slant on the pensions worries.
You will have to look carefully to find it on the general BBC business site as it is slightly buried?
The author, Simon Reid was a journo at the Independent, he still does regular money features freelance/research, and he is a Shrimper!

Basically, The fat share holders/execs get fatter on dividends while the workers worry more and get less on their pensions!

If you give Terry £100 a week and he gives you £30 back - when someone asks how much money you give Terry a week you'd say £70. If you said £100 and hoped they didn't know to follow that up with another question then you would be deliberately giving misleading figures.

Cameron says Out leads to WW3, Boris says that Remain means Germany get to carry out Hitler's ultimate goals. These are individuals giving outlandish scenarios to try to trick you. The Leave leaflets stating £350m is a whole organisation agreeing to give out misleading information as their leading communication. They as a collective have written to me as an individual and lied.

And that's without looking at the track record on the NHS from the individuals involved.

Actually, the question I'd expect them to follow up with is "why do you pay him that, and what do you get?". It's tantamount to giving someone a fiver to get you some shopping and them coming back with a loaf of bread and given the rest to the neighbours.

But you get my point? The lead figure in the Leave campaign's literature is a lie.

Listen I know the bloke your talking about, Terry the ponce. Been at for years and he's never going to change. If I was you I'd ditch him fast, as he's certainly no mate of yours.

Its bit like saying migrants pay in 5 times more tax than they take in benefits. Which of course we all do, providing we never need an education or use the NHS or emergency services. Even the court system and prison costs money and group 4 don't come cheap.

You get my point trying to claim immigrants pay a higher percentage in tax than me is lie, in a campaign of lies by both sides. Which is exactly what I expect from politicians.

I didn't say or deny it wasn't a lie :raspberry: What I did say was that the figure was wrong and misleading but, and here's the rub, even the lowest agreed figure of £23m a day (£8.5bn a year) is a colossal amount of money that could be put to better use here in the UK economy.

And the Remain/Osbourne camps Tweet stating that pensions would suffer if we chose to leave is also a lie. They are protected by this governments own triple lock mechanism that ensures a 2.5% annual rise (or in line with inflation, whichever is higher) but let's not get into a who lied here and who lied there tit for tat. That's childish :winking:
