The Essex CCC Thread

With all due respect, the flip side is the fact that you don't have to pay the wages of these players. Kent are 'lucky' in the sense that they're overloaded with Lions-standard players like Key, Denley, Steven, Jones and Khan who are above-average players who don't get called up often, but then again we have to pay for them. It's a fine balancing act, and explains why we've only got 16 professionals on the books, and no regular overseas player.

Especially when, like us, you'll have no chance of staging international matches and so getting the income other clubs receive.

Exactly my point. I always enjoy an Essex defeat, but only because my Orient mates/you lot are Eagles and it's fun to wind you all up. But the scum sides for me will always be Surrey and Middlesex. Makes their current respective malaises all the more entertaining. :)

We were never really in it yesterday, though IF Middlebrook had held onto that catch (it would've been a stunner mind) they would've needed 48 off 5 with 5 wickets left and it might've been different

We pay a heavy penalty by being a successful county and having our best players called up for International duty all the time ... perhaps Jonny would like to tell us how many K*nt players were unavailable yesterday ;) ... how many counties could cope with losing players of the calibre of Cook and Bopara for such a crucial game ?? (I'm not certain why Danish didn't play mind)

And this is where the ECB have a lot to answer for ... next weekend its the FP semis and (for example) Lancashire will be without Flintoff, when it comes to the T20 Quarters no test players will be available, surely they could schedule matches so that the top players get to play in their counties top games ??

Danish went to Sri Lanka.

Middlebrook just dropped Mascheranas and it went for 6. I think that's lost the game.

Yep, that cost us the game.

The South African superstar is only Amla as well.

I suppose he's an upgrade over our current middle order, although we're unlikely to drop our captain to make way.

I'd have thought Walker was most at risk of being dropped, Pettini bagged a 50 and a ton vs K*nt in the last championship game, and 87 vs Surrey in the T20 so i'd of thought he's emerging from his poor run of form

A question for those of you who know their way around Southend better than I do (which isn't hard)....

Day 4 of our game vs Gloucestershire at Garon Park is the same day as SUFC vs Huddersfield. Is it much of a walk from Garon Park to Roots Hall? Thinking of catching a spot of cricket before the football if the weather is fine and the match is still alive.

Garons is 5 minutes past Boots & Laces so around 15 minutes walk i'd say

Cheers for that. Seeing as it's £15 to get in and I'd only be likely to see a couple of hours, the game will need to be nicely poised for me to bother but we shall see.

Definitely going to the Pro40 game on the Sunday though.

I wanted to post this yesterday afternoon but didn't want to put the mockers on ...

Amla is 159 not out as we are making a good fist of saving this match ... 200 all out in our first innings after Glamorgan had got 500 is simply not good enough though and shows precisely why we have gained fewer batting points than any other side in the league

He ended up with 181 (possibly the highest scoring debutant we've ever had ?? Obviously ignoring the paltry 4 he scored in the first innings !!! and along with 64 from Foster and 88* from RtD we saved the game easily in the end

Gotta do something about these first innings failures though

That safe mid-table spot is looking ever more secure, Beagles :)

Flippin' rain going to ruin our impending massacre of Surrey, methinks.

Take your best 2 players out your side for the whole season and see how you do.

Granted, we are rubbish at the 4 day stuff and have been for a long, long time. Matt Walker has also been pretty poor, sadly. Take him back.

England can have Rob Key if they like - this is the first time he's made any runs this summer.

As for Walker, well, we gave you Masters so there had to be some trade-off. That said, he's a good player; just needs time to settle in. As a leftie he adds balance to your line up. He'll come good.
