The Essex CCC Thread

My point is that these players flesh out the squad in my opinion and won't do much to ensure our stay in the top league of the CC. Phillips - there could be room for improvement but he just doesn't turn it much. Batting is ropey! Not convincing!

I thought Pettini would be out the door when he lost the captaincy! His mum must be copping off with one of the coaches. Standard.

To my surprise Essex have been far more competitive in the 4 day game than I thought they would be. If the weather hadn't intervened they could have further victories to their credit over Durham, Notts & Lancs. Chambers seems to be developing nicely (finally), and it seems that we'll have Ravi until the ODI's against Pakistan start in September. With RtD to come back it's possible that they may stave off relegation.

Phillips will fill the spinning berth unless Essex go for another spinner from overseas, which I doubt as I've been told that Mohammed Sami will sign. And I don't see a problem like YB in having Pettini as mainly a one day player, his record isn't bad, and barely 18 months ago he was being spoken of as an initernational T20 player.

I think Paul Grayson and his staff deserve a lot of credit for what they have achieved so far this season, and long may it continue.

I honestly believe that RtD has been a godsend. His injury was the most misfortunate timing. Styris has done a quality job in the 2020s. It has been good having cooky and ravi around but without them we begin to struggle! Danish Kaneria is the chap who has got Essex achieving in the 4 day format in my opinion in recent years! you can't argue with his wickets tally. Chambers has only come on leaps and bounds in the last month or so. He has found some form. If he can keep it up then he will have had a brilliant season come September. Jury remains out for me but for now I agree he has improved. More so that he is starting to get the experience.

He may have been talked about at a T20 player but quite frankly that is ridiculous a 25 average at a 129 strike rate for a bloke who offers no bowling and is an average fielder.... He struggles against County line ups. Form is more permanent for those who have a bit of class. Class is permanent and Pettini doesn't have that. Please check his batting averages. For a 1st team captain of his county they are way below standard. He has been fortunate enough to have a young team and learn from some of the most experienced players and coaches.

Agree that this year Grayson, Gooch and Co. deserve credit and Essex should be proud but Phillips and Pettini are average Div 2 players in my opinion!

You are preaching to the converted on Pettini's short-comings as a batsman (although I think you are harsh on his fielding), but I think you are also being unrealistic in expecting squad players to be world beaters. We need players to cover Cook and Bopara (and Kaneria) when they are on international duty, and what player is going to be willing to be an understudy if they are good enough to be a first team player elsewhere? Almost by definition he's going to be an average division 2 player.

Carter has taken his first wicket in an Essex sweater (i don't think he took one on Sunday but i was drinking heavily during the game so may of missed it, hic)

Yorkshire 95-1

Chances of us taking 20 wickets without Danny!? Slim. Suprised Ravi hasn't had a bowl yet though as golden arm has a knack of taking wickets.

No real penetration in our seam attack unfortunately! But we must persist and pick up the batting points and some cheeky bowling points and hope we win a few games.

And Westley has just had Gale caught behind 215-5

On SSN just now the twit (mispelling) in the studio said "Lets head over to Chelmsford where the leaders Yorkshire have taken control of their match with Essex"

At the time they were 207-4 after our 399 which doesn't really strike me as "being in control"

Looks pretty evenly balanced to me. Critical first session with Essex needing some quick wickets and get Yorkshire out before lunch, if they want to keep the glimmer of a chance of winning the match alive. That's if you believe that they could bowl out Yorkshire cheaply for a second time. A draw looks the most likely outcome...........which I don't suppose is a bad result against the league leaders.

That was an annoying 50 run stand for the 8th, we should be able to take a 70+ lead into our second innings but this is heading for a draw without doubt

We finally got the 10th wicket with the score on 324 and a lead of 75 but then lost Jaik Mickleburgh to the first ball of our 2nd innings

currently 12-1 (87-1 in match terms)
