The Essex CCC Thread

Fantastic news for Essex btw.

We've managed to sign Billy Godleman from Middlesex on a 3 year deal.

This is the most exciting signing Essex have made since errr.... we prised Danny Law away from Sussex. Admittedly that didn't work out, but Godleman was tipped as something special and I can't believe Middlesex have let him go. Actually I can, because Middlesex are a mess. They've got loads of talent yet somehow bottom of the bottom division. Gus Fraser has done an appalling job IMHO, but I digress.

Godleman is I think still only 20, but is hugely talented and left-handed. The prospect of him working with Gooch is very exciting. Essex's batting has been abysmal this season so hopefully he can help it out.

That is good news indeed. I've seen (for my sins) more of Middlesex than Essex and recent years and I've always liked the look of him.

310-3 at the close.

Maunders 142* Westley 71* great knock from the 2 youngsters. Be nice to see these 2 along with Godleman become a resolute top order with the likes of Cook, Ravi, Petts, Walker.

Maunders certainly isn't a youngster.

I was there today (left at 5pm). Cook looked a class above, it looked too easy for him which is why he got himself out, over confidence. Maunders was just a stodgy, dull opening batsman, and whilst it's nice to see him get runs, it doesn't half remind me how spoilt we were to see classier batsmen such as Ravi, Flower, Irani in the batting line-up in recent years. Watching Maunders, Chopra and Walker isn't so entertaining.

Still, great platform for our big hitters tomorrow.

Essex have often had a "stodgy" batsman to supplement their stroke makers. Brian Hardie being one, and he was a great foil for the likes of Graham Gooch & Kenny McEwan.

Yeah, true, but our top order was filled with them today. Still, not as bad as the top 4 at Southend the other week.

Are we going for quick runs or not?

When Phillips (22 from 60) was out, stumped, Kaneria went in ahead of RtD and got a first ball duck. RtD then made 1 from 14.
Yes, I thought it strange that RtD didn't come in at 7. What's the cut-off point for batting bonus points ??

Now 488-8! Masters 60 off 64 with 7 4's and 2 6's! Impressive work, for a albeit, impressive number 10! Perhaps RtD is still struggling a little with injury and we have seen Danny come in at 3 in one (dreaded) game!

Kev

We declared as Fossie reached his century and Leicester close on 93-2 with Danny getting both after a solid start from the Leicester openers!
