The Essex CCC Thread

The General said:
Gotta love set-up run chases! Probably what Cook and Ravi need as gives them a chance to express themselves!

Exactly, just go and bat and don't worry about technique etc, just get some runs.

Cook 35no off 32 balls.

4 and 6 off successive balls from Napier .. 2 to win

WAHOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ESSEX ESSEX ESSEX !!!!!!

Very good win that...............was it two off the last ball? Thank you Middlesex for a generous declaration.

We needed 90 off the last 9 overs.

We did it with 2 overs to spare.

Bopara timed the run chase to perfection. Pettini and Walker threatened to hold it up. Pettini played twice as many shots as Cook did, but the difference is Cook can bat and is therefore able to both hit the ball and find gaps. Pettini's inability to score meant that Cook had to take risks and he perished to Kartik bowling into the rough. Sending in that fat lump Walker was particularly brainless on two counts as (1) as he can't run, therfore turning singles into dot balls and twos into ones and (2) he was a left-hander when Middlesex's best chance of success was the rough to the left-handers.

Fortunately both Pettini and Walker got out. RtD then played a quite fantastic cameo. Foster came in and stupidly got himself out when we only needed to push singles but Napier smacked the winning runs.

Ravi flying with an unbeaten century but something quite worrying is that both Pettini and Tendo have had to retire injured. So despite losing Foster, Phillips is in to bat, despite being a number 8!

Kev

Essex 350 odd for 4. Ravi still batting. Pettini is off with a back problem and Tendo has been struck on the hand and been taken to Springfield for a scan. With this on day 3, we're going to have to get 550/600 and then look to bowl them AO tomorrow afternoon although being 2 batters down, im not sure how possible this is going to be!

Essex need 74 to win as Surrey are bowled out with Kaneria getting 6/50.

Is this a late bid for promotion? They should get Cook back as he isn't selected for the ODI's.

Great win for Essex against Statki's Surrey. Moves us to third in the table. Shame we will be losing Ravi to the one dayers but hopefully they let Cook play and we can get another couple of wins in the last 4 games.

It will be ridiculous if the selectors repeat what they did last season in not allowing Cook to play the last few first class matches. And as the selectors have maintained their "continuity" of selection Essex will also be able to select both Foster & Napier.

The selectors really need to allow Cook to play because Ravi needs to be playing first division cricket next season.
