Question The Acceptance of Mediocrity

You have only got to read your posts, stating that you don't mind putting up with our position in the league all because of what we have gone through. I don't want to put up with it, we have had years of Rat not putting any money in, I don't want the new owners to do the same.
Bim was lucky, as his record of only scoring a couple in the Scottish league denotes that.
If we had more bodies, even loanees, we could see if they work or not. We signed Bonne for a year, without knowing what he could do for us, now we are stuck.
Actually we had years of RM putting a lot of money into the team and too often getting no return for his investment. A succession of poor management, disinterested players and sicknotes meant RM was just peeing his money down the nearest drain. For many seasons we saw it was about getting ANY player rather than the right player. Same could be said for a number of the managers.

Sadly RM did not match his commitment to the team with investment into the stadium. COSU have purchased little more than a filthy, neglected toilet with a lot of seats in it. I have no problem with them putting the house in order. I still do not believe RH will become a viable proposition but that is for the future to prove or disprove. For sure it will not generate the necessary revenue streams in its current state.

All the fans would like to see a few new faces on the pitch and it would/could signal genuine intent and aspiration. The order in which COSU does things is their affair and I am sure they are best placed to judge what they can do and when. My gripe is that we haven't been getting the best from the players we have but, I believe we have recently seen some movement on that front and that's good enough for me.

Splashing the cash can be reframed as spun#ing it away. There are no guarantees but sensible budgeting and DD will at least reduce the risks.

why keep bringing Bonne into your threads , he is not the only one that hasnt scored ,Do you think he is the cause of us being 14th in the ladder ,give it a rest , reading the match day threads seems many think he playing well . Even Kane early on in his career went out on loan a few times and was hardly a recognised goal scorer ,yet now he is Englands all time top goalscorer , i wonder how he would have felt back then if he got all the abuse Bonne gets .
I brought up the happy with being mediocre in the Bonne thread. OK you think he's great that's your opinion, Coker has scored, Ralph and bridge plus others, so a striker who hasn't scored in nearly 20 games is off limit for criticism? No player should read forums as they wouldn't like what they read.

You should ask Boy Wonder as he seems privy to the development plans for Roots Hall (not the H& S spending of course)
You should remember that the Club will receive money in instalments once building starts and then continues at Fossetts. In a recent statement from Daniel Cowan he said it may be 2026 or even 2027, before the Development begins. Continued patience will be needed.

Unfortunately, Rat hadn't put any money in for years, that's what I'm moaning about

As usual these days we end up in this thread with two entrenched sets of views and no room for compromise. It's no wonder that our once regular posters are getting less and less. Maybe we should all take a good look at ourselves in an attempt to make the Zone a better read and discussion site for all Shrimpers. Just a thought.

Mediocrity as in terms of final league position is fine if that’s where we end up.

Unfortunately the majority of play that we have seen this season is turgid.

That has to change and at least look to try and entertain the fans or crowd numbers will stagnate .

Some football fans are more patient than others, we’re built differently. I’m not sure mediocrity is something anyone is happy with. We all want one thing and that’s a successful Southend United and to be entertained.

I think if we all just agreed about everything, there would be less reason to visit. If some posters can't take a little bit of pushback, then that's really their problem.

I wasn't asking for agreement about everything, far from it, but thanks for the feedback, always welcome.

Mediocrity is a state of mind. Plenty of clubs exist on gates of 2,000 or even less. Some have new stadiums with good food and drink on match days, they live within their means, accepting their status and not on what they believe they should have.

I would say there's not enough topics to get our teeth into, maybe that's why posters have dropped off. It's better we get it off our chests on here, than at the match.
I hope all on here support the team, while the game is on, as we need to be the 12th man.
Football is a game full of passion and emotion, if we sanitized it too much, it wouldn't be as exciting!
Keep the banter going, as we all support the mighty blues, it's just some have different opinions.

For me the question is not about accepting mediocrity but whether as a club we’re moving in the right direction or not.

And I see a club where we’re finally putting in the long term foundations for success. A new training ground, investment in the stadium, a proper management structure rather than hiring or firing on a whim to appease fans, a playing style implanted across the club, a scouting strategy. We’re laying the groundwork for success. Making decisions for the long term good of the club. Not ripping it all up and starting all over again every six months; not ignoring the future and concentrating only on today at the inevitable cost for tomorrow.

This is in stark contrast to our time under Alvin Martin or Kevin Bond when the club felt like it was hopelessly drifting, or the utter futility under Alan Little when it felt like it was going nowhere fast. It is the complete 360 to our time under Phil Brown when I could see only too clearly the impending disaster on the horizon when the money inevitably ran out after short term decision after short term decision set up our subsequent relegation to the NL.

This time I see the foundations being laid for promotion much as Sturrock laid the foundations for our Wembley trips by providing structure and organisation; blooding Dan Bentley, finding Ryan Leonard, signing Michael Timlin and the legendary Barry Corr; boosting our coffers with Ryans Hall and Cresswell etc. Like Tilly did with making the players comfortable passing the ball, finding Freddy Eastwood, getting the best out of Maher and Gower, having a local core with Barrett and Prior. Like Webby did when he signed Austin, Powell, Ansah, Angell, Benjamin to supplement the likes of Tilly, Butler and Clark.

I now see tangible progress after years of treading water or drifting backwards.

I see a coaching set up that improved players like Oli Coker, James Morton, Harry Cardwell and Harry Taylor; a scouting network that identified Bim Pepple, Cav Miley, George Wind as additions; coaches who organised and improved us - how can people so easily forget that shambles when we lost 4-0 at home to Chesterfield or 2-0 at C*lchester?

And the griping about things on the pitch is strange since last time we had this conversation we’re unbeaten in 4, have scored 9 and kept 2 clean sheets in that time (1 with 10 men).

There will be setbacks along the way - like when we had our spine ripped out - but overall we’re on the right path we just don’t know yet how long this journey back to the EFL will take.

Good times are around the corner - possibly starting in the Trophy if we can make that our version of the JPT - and I’m going to be here for them.

Ron overspent on players and ignored RH because he thought FF and the Championship was the answer.
Funny how some of the posters who shouted from the roof tops about Ron have already turned on COSU...... For the crime of not being like Ron

I get they are only concerned about what happens on the pitch ......Thats because they don't even go to games. They never even donate £5 to Shrimperzone.

They have never run business with why they don't understand how the small but successful EFL clubs operate. Its simple, they make more from their stadium than the do from ticket sales. Shrewsbury made more money in the summer from weddings and events than we will in whole season. The answer isn't always owners should fund my club while I sit on the sofa with my fire stick.

I guess those amongst us who do really support our club are happy with the improvements. Thats because our contribution is far from mediocrity and we don't announce like some pompous **** that we wont be attending if there is no glory in sight......Yet come May the wingers will be there at Wembley..... Complete face paint, comedy wig and big foam thumb.

i was targeting anyone in particular, fact is there are others that havent scored ,its been said many times our defenders apart from GSM havent contributed much and apart from Coker nor have the midfielders ,but what has been said by many is how Bim seems to play better with Bonne along side him ,how Bonne is so good with his head and positioning himself on the ground, assists dont just come from the person passing the ball to the scorer but also on the position they take up on the field of play that allows the scorer the room to get into a position to score or for the person laying off that pass to the scorer .Seems bonne does that well .
