What may tip the balance is that NL loanees can be recalled outside of transfer windows whereas L2 loanees can’t.

But even if we get any of the three Sheffield Utd lads in on loan it is incredibly unlikely that they’ll still be here at the end of the season. They would give a huge boost in the short term but this needs to be weighed against the inevitable disruption when they are recalled and that it might be harder to replace them mid-season than now.
I agree with Yorkies important caveat.

All 3, I really rate, however Husin and Neal had a number of games where they were not at their best together and a little inconsistent and so for Promotion I wonder whether we may need a bit more creativity or even strength in midfield if we can get it, especially against the potentially stronger sides

We only won 5 of our last 14 games and in 6 that Husin (injured and on International duty ) and Neal played together we only won one, so just raising a slight concern, excepting towards the end of the season we didnt have a lot to play for and at times it showed

An update on Louis Lomas to put to bed rumours or any concerns as to why he is yet to sign:

It appears, consistent with Kev's comments in the Echo, that the club have made enquiries as to signing Lopata and Gubbins on loan. Kevin was away on holiday whilst the club met with Louis and his agent. Louis was then on holiday during the period in which Kev returned, and Louis has only recently got back. Nonetheless it appears that Kevin is yet to give the final seal of approval on this one, and seems more keen in signing the two ex-loanees. It's a slow burner this one and dependant on a lot of things - risking another club jumping in IMO.

Personally would be surprised if we do manage to get Lopata back.

Bewilders me that we'd go for Gubbins on a loan deal rather than signing a young talented player on a permanent deal who has been earning rave reviews, was an ever present in a team that conceded 23 goals in 42 games with 28 clean sheets, and was in the team of the year for the league below. Would be a good investment, but there we go.

Meanwhile looking for that post by Simply Shrimpers that says this signing was imminent a while back 👀

Would be surprised if we were prioritising a loan for Gubbins over signing Lomas, which makes me wonder if we've enquired about signing some of the ex-loanees permanently & not loans?

We won't be signing three centre halves. It'll be two, especially with the playing budget.
I’d see room for 3 new centre-halves, particularly if one is a loanee who we don’t have to pay the wages on.

We generally play 3 at the back and have just 4 centre-halves. One of whom is a first year pro yet to make his debut, another one was originally a LWB and we don’t have another LWB in our books (albeit an offer has been made to Clifford).

Gubbins makes sense if he’s the only one who’s comfortable on the left and he’s presumably cheap (I assume QPR let us have Kargbo for free as that’s the only way that deal made sense, if that’s any indicator of how they operate).

Lopata played down the middle. Is that where Lomas played, in the middle of 3?

So anything in signings this week there’s no knew names or rumours ? Just same names and that chart of done deal and likely unlikely ain’t changed for a while 😀

If we wait for the three players to get through pre season at there current clubs before they consider loaning them to us, we are missing out on potential targets if we don't get these loan players in.

Maybe they are worth taking a waiting risk on. Even if we only pulled one of Neal or Lopata, it would be worth the risk.

It's a dangerous game imo, especially at a time when we seem to have gotten our scouting and recruitment house in order at long last. By the time we've waited for the parent club to decide whether they want to send those players out on loan to us, our 2nd, 3rd and 4th choices will have been snapped up and if our advances for the 3 loanees are rejected then we're fishing in a small pond all of a sudden.

It's a balancing act and I don't envy those having to make these calls, but not sure that this is the best way to go about things. Lomas is highly thought of, has bags of potential and is being sniffed around by other clubs. Get him signed up and then hope to bag one or both (I think we need 5 natural centre halves if we're playing 3 at the back) of Łopata/Gubbins down the line.

It also seems quite a short term outlook.

Lomas is unlikely to start immediately. He’ll probably need half a season to adjust to full-time training etc and be eased in gently (like Kensdale last season) to give him the best chance of succeeding.

Meanwhile if we sign Lopata he’s likely to only be here for half a season….

Not good news still green on the scale thought slow burners were orange. I think you’d have been better not posting that just my opinion makes kev look like has big ego

What has Maher said or done to deserve the big ego comment? As far as I can see he is purely keeping supporters in the loop on progress.

Disagree with Lomas unlikely to start immediately due to needing half a season to adjust. Yes I understand the jump from part time to full time football is a lot but if we signed him now then with a good 4 week pre -season under his belt I think he’ll be ready come the start of the season. The lad is obviously a quality player judging by his defence stats last season so don’t think the step up would be that much of an issue for him at all.

Lomas played mainly in a back three as either the right or left, but never the middle, so I don't think we would be waiting on Lopata or Gubbins.

He also had a few games as a right back/wing back, so he is a little versatile.

I'm not ITK, but I don't think the potential loans of Lopata or Gubbins will decide whether or not we get Lomas. He is still young (turns 22 in October) and will have potential to improve. It might be different if we were looking at a 30-something year old who might have 1 or 2 seasons of his peak left in him, but we clearly aren't thinking of that strategy.

Share some concerns that others have here, but can only assume (and hope) that as this Management Team are pretty savvy that they are quietly confident that there is a pretty good chance that these players will return....................................if not then we will be scrambling around in the bargain bins again.

As ever I do think some of the comments have read a lot into a tidbit of information, perhaps getting 5 from 2 plus 2. Lots of factors come into play and we don’t know just how encouraging Sheffield United were when Kev registered interest in the previous loanees, or what constraints the budget places on relative priorities as the pursuit of different targets warms up or cools down. Recruitment has been a real strength of the new regime so I’ll trust them to get it right. There’s lots of voices contributing to our target list and relative priorities, not just Kev. I’d love to see us sign Lomas, and hopefully we will (something has to justify his 🟢🔥 status!).

I'm not sure about that. They played together in the wins against Grimsby, Altrincham and Halifax (Husin was subbed after 27 minutes, but we were 1-0 up). They also played together in the second half of the 3-2 win against Woking, which putting Neal in to make a three man midfield arguably won the game.

In the four defeats they had together, it was either Atkinson (twice) or Bridge (twice) that was subbed off.

If (probably big if) they were to play together next season, then I think we would need a creative passer in the middle to complement them both. Neal is a great defensive player who retains the ball well and can pass it forward on occasion. Husin isn't afraid to work hard and get stuck in too, with a great range of passing as well as an attacking threat shown with a few goals. Someone in there who can play through passes to the strikers would be fantastic. Someone like McAtee at Grimsby or Warburton at Halifax, could that be Jack Bridge or Jack Wood for us?

It’s quite refreshing seeing these rumours of so many different defensive players. I think Kensdale is a quality player with a bright future. Is he not considered to be a starter along with Hobson of course…

Just a reminder that until we see the 🤝 emoji, no deal can be considered nailed on to happen. As ever it's a fluid situation and things can and will change all the time.

There will also be plenty of other targets that are not on our SZ list.

That’s fair enough sounds like your saying lomas is of that’s a shame gotta trust the team I suppose though
