I can understand if they have a good job outside of football but it also says to me that they arent that confident in their ability to make a success as a professional footballer .Also maybe they have a young family and think their job outside of football is more important for the family.

Thought that might’ve been the case, would be a strange move to turn down a professional club if he didn’t. Unless it was for personal/location reasons.
Job security is a precious commodity, a 3 year contract might have tempted him but we certainly can't be offering that to an untested player.
A single season with options and add ons isn't quite balanced against possible injury or change of management/form.

A professional football career is pretty short and probably not financially great at this level, so if they have a decent job, you can't blame them for staying put. If they haven't made it to a higher level already, unlikely they will do now.

Shepherd is 27, realistically even if he is good enough for professional football he isn't going to make it much further than League 1 or 2 (even Jamie Vardy, who was discovered very late, joined Leicester at 25), that's not going to be enough money to retire off so he'd probably have to go back into his career after retirement but at that point he'll be very rusty. I wouldn't say that doesn't mean he doesn't rate himself as a footballer, it just means he's realistic.

Interesting, wonder if he has a decent job. Or if we were genuinely that interested in him.
Think it’s difficult with the older guys. If he was a 23 year old you’d reasonably say he could have a decade of professional football ahead to play and that little bit more room for improvement and so potentially a higher ceiling but he’s a 27 year old (28 in November) who’d likely start behind Miley on the depth chart and we’d likely only be offering a two year deal, maybe even one years.

Plus being that bit older he’s presumably a bit further into his non-football career and so has a little bit more to give up that side as well.

let’s be honest say an example is a 40k a year salary plus they get £300 minimum per week for playing football, why would you go full-time and take a chance?

from a Barnet fan....

"Harry is a solid NL player and always gives everything, but I don't view him as a weekly starter in a promotion pushing team.

Best position for me is holding in a 3 man midfield or on the right of a back 3. As soon as you put him in a back 4 or midfield 4 his lack of dynamism gets exposed."

Let's prove him wrong Harry!!

Sounds like he will slot into the right side of the back 3 rather than a wing back position.

Currently, our back 3 is Ralph - Kensdale - Hobson, with Davis as back-up (who Maher seems to rate). My question is, is Kensdale viewed as a main stay in the middle or are we looking for someone in the Lopata mould (not necessarily him) to come in and be the main starter there?

Where would Davis also be viewed to play? He is a big lad who wins a lot in the air so he might be viewed as back up in the middle.

One thing for certain is we need a back-up for Ralph, or even a main starter if Ralph is viewed more as a wing back.

Thought Davis had been released?
