Whilst I agree with the way our three permanent centre-backs are currently looking the business, with Taylor out for the foreseeable future, we're only only centre-back injury away from either:
*Ralph moving back to left-sided centre-back. Now, I actually like the balance the team has with Ralph in this position, but he's significantly outperforming Clifford (who is doubtful through injury himself, of course) at left wing-back, and Lomas has slotted in nicely to that role;
*A rookie in Tommy Davis having to step into the back three. Again, Tommy looked assured when he was given opportunities in pre-season, but he hasn't made his competitive first-team debut with us yet and it would be a big step-up for him; or
*Having to change formation. Again, whilst 4-2-3-1 might suit our current availability, I'd rather continue with the formation we've already got.

So, if Łopata was to become available, I certainly think it would be worthwhile bringing him in, even though he'd have to fight for a starting berth on current form. We know what he's capable of, and as @JAL says above, it would drive competition in those places. Of course, if the management team identify someone else, then that's fine as well.
It's probably a moot point now anyway. There does not appear to have been any movement on Lopata's contract renewal and until that is settled he isn't going anywhere. I also think that Sheffield, and probably Lopata, will want to play at a higher level this season than National League. As for another CB? we shall see.

I've heard from several people he does/did want to come back, not sure of the situation at the minute.

The title of the thread is 'Summer Transfer Targets' and is not the the 31st of August the last day of summer?
The pedant in me says this thread should be closed on the 1st of September!
31st August is nothing but a met office data collection point, true seasons work from shortest day , longest day and the spring and Autumn equinox !

I remember under tilly. We had Eagle and Barrett signed up as first choice centre backs. Then Prior became available and we found the money. We are in the conference. Even our best player had many many better players in his position.

In all honesty I can’t imagine any more incoming unless we have some outgoing.

The squad is quite large now and I am hoping that Team Maher haven’t inherited Chris Powells’ luck with injuries

Shouldn't the loan system cover short to medium term injuries like when keepers get loaned in, this will help keep the squad from getting bloated .
The ideal sponsor for the blues is some sort of medical provider, to provide some sort of MASH unit 😉

We 100% need another CB in my opinion asap. That’s nothing against our 3 centre backs as they have all looked very good so far and I’m really happy with them all.

However Lomas is making the step up from part time to full time football and with our injury issues it will be a minor miracle if one of them 3 doesn’t get injured in the coming months. That would mean Ralph switching back to CB and Clifford back at LWB.

I think we can all agree Ralph looks so much better as LWB (had a great game on Sat) and Clifford just hasn’t been the same player in the last few games.

So for me, another CB is crucial ASAP to ensure we have adequate cover in that area!

Question is, what do you go for a permanent move or a loan one?

I think we're fine, we've seen we can get quality loanees in last minute with Lopata and Gubbins before, stick to what we've got with Davis as a backup for now and bring a loanee in when we need one, unless someone ace comes along.

If it's back up, I can't see a parent club accepting a loan, unless it was short term to cover injuries. Probably easier to bring someone in permanent, but do we have the space?

Do we have any youngsters that can cover and doesn't Taylor play there as well (I know he's injured at the moment).

If we take a player on loan from a club higher up the leagues, theres every chance that part of the deal would be thatthey pay a chunk of his wages if he plays and we do if he doesnt. Quite a common thing in those situations. It would mean pressure on Kev to play him at the expense of one of the three who are now getting used to each other.

Short term loans aren’t as attractive to clubs since the rule about the number of clubs you can play for in a season was introduced. Teams will be looking for longer loans.

Lopata is the million dollar question as if he became available then we want(ed) him and he wants to be here - so who knows?

Lopata aside then I believe that we should now only be looking at injury cover loans such as Gubbins/Clarke last season as currently at CB we have:

Kensdale
Hobson
Lomas
Davies
Ralph
Taylor

We could even go to a flat back 4 and only need 2 starting CBs if forced to.

.............so when all are fit (wishful thinking) then I think that is more than adequate.

I said a few months ago Ralph’s best position was LB/LWB but was told Ralph couldn’t play LWB but could play LB…

Don’t know why he’s be pushed into the frame of being a CB when that is not his natural position and he’s best deployed as an attacking fullback.

absolutely this. I love TC but we look so much better with Ralph in that LWB role

Davis will be more than adequate cover if one needs a rest, he trains with the lads and would fit in quite easily into the system, Hes tall not afraid of heading a ball and from remarks from Kev and co has ability. Think he also showed that when out on loan last season .

6 players at centre back and we want more. Think some are getting greedy
