He played 41 games last season hardly injury prone. 41 games after being a back up keeper at previous clubs is pretty impressive. His prior injuries could have been more of a case of not playing regularly.
Home owners do not expect their houses to be burnt down yet still feel it prudent to insure themselves against this unlikely event.
It makes sense for any team, especially one aspiring to contend for promotion, to have a back up goalkeeper.
We all hope Arnold will have an injury free season but it is good planning to have a ready replacement at hand.
I suspect we will find that concussion will became a bigger issue in the future, and, this may affect goalkeepers more than outfield players.
Steve suffered a concussion last season, and, regardless of his previous history, would almost certainly be stood down for a period if the same was to happen this season.
Insurance is always good but at the right price of course!

Wrexham approach is probably the best way to get out of this graveyard of a league....... there approach would of come off last season if they didn't have stockport in this league. Another club who weren't shy to spend and I think stockport will go up again. Of course it isn't all about spending the big bucks, but when your in league where its only 1 automatic spot it half bloudy helps.
Did they not throw countless pounds at promotion last season as well .Only for it to end in tears .No matter how much you spend on players it does not mean you will get promoted .

Wealdstone got two very good signings in Max Kretzschmar and Lewis Kinsella.

They have the opportunity to build their outside interests as well as football. It sounds as if the part-time twinned with being able to do other things was a pull for them. Fair play to Wealdstone, two very good signings at this level.

All the sides seem to be assembling competitive teams. No easy game next season.

Some saw the NL as easy but now they know the truth...It was a hard league last term and it about to get harder.

SUFC get great crowds and your players love it........But so do your opponents!

It's a bit like politicians @BALDY, the more you repeat the same old message over and over, the less it has any importance. We get that you think it will be hard, so do we, but there is nothing wrong with a bit of excitement at the start of a season as we haven't had much for a few years now. And this is a Southend United supporters board.

Point taken.

It looks like Callum Powell is stirring it up a bit with him on Instagram, are we in a weird situation where we are tapping up a championship player as a non league team?

They were in the same hotel together last season. They would do extra training and always eat together in the restaurant.

Nice thought but Neal can comfortably play in the EFL and certainly wouldn’t be a ‘bench warmer’

But we can make signings throughout the season to replace these if needed. There will be plenty of FL keepers we could easily get on a short term emergency loan if needed.

I’m glad to see we have signed some good, young, up and coming players however my biggest concern is the lack of experience especially in the middle of the park. We need players who can keep things calm when/if they get challenging. I know it is slightly different but look at when we were in league one with so many young players playing they ended up out of their depth. We also have some players that have stepped up from a lower level and although they have the quality they need the experience alongside them too.

I’d rather we use the money to add some more talented exciting youngsters (20-25 years old). I think 3 more including a central midfielder and a striker and we are good to go.

Fast paced, exciting, attractive football with plenty of goals scored…or am I dreaming?

Solihull are not a surprise package they have a top 5 budget reckon they will be the only serious threat to Wrexham, some serious wedge being pumped in and pretty much the same with Bromley who easily have a top 10 budget, paying the likes of Cheek £2k a week made play offs the previous season but that FA trophy run finished them last season.

Wrexham will walk the league, their form last 6/7 months of season was same as Stockports bar a few games it’s about play offs for everyone else. Someone mentioned about 80 points would normally see you promoted, seen a few sides miss out on promotion down the years who got 90+, ruthless division.

I know someone at Wealdstone board level through my job, Max is now their highest ever paid player thanks to a very generous fan otherwise they would never have signed him, he wanted to stay part time and was never signing for a full time team unless they could blow his current job and part time wages out the water which would have been unlikely. There was probably 10 sides part time when we came back down here 6/7 years ago that’s probably down to 2 or 3, gets tougher every year.

My instincts would be that to have a replacement in place would be a worthwhile option provided the price was right.
It will be interesting to see what Kev and co's thoughts on this issue are.

When we have finished our transfer business then will be the time to see what we may be capable of this season. I say 'we' but I mean Kevin and Co. They will know what the squad will be capable of. They will also know they will have the backing of the absolutely best supporters in this league bar none.
But without the ‘we’ there wouldn’t be a ‘they’!

Agree unlikely however…he may view us as a brilliant opportunity. Guaranteed starter, potential captain (at a very young age), good shop window being on BT sport, knows management team and fans already worship him.

Dropping down for one season could see him jump up to a League One club a lot quicker than sitting on bench for a club higher up or in the youth for Sheffield.

Or I could be talking absolute nonsense…!

Yep, different people prioritise different things. Some prioritise money, some security, some prioritise happiness, some winning, some testing themselves at the highest level. I don’t think there’s necessarily a wrong answer here.

I wouldn’t be surprised if at the end of his career he looks back on last season as one of his fondest. We know Stan did of his time with us. I think he’ll have a real sense of accomplishment to pull the team clear of relegation and embark on that epic unbeaten spell and there seems to be a real camaraderie within the squad.

I think back to our previous Eastern European loanee centre-half - Jakob Sokolik. He had a similar dilemma. He enjoyed his time on loan at Roots Hall and the team enjoyed similar form with him in the side. He had a choice of staying and getting games where he’d be first choice or finding a club at a higher level offering more money. I argued at the time that he needed games more than anything and he’d get that at Southend. We were a decent bet to get promoted by the end of his contract anyway.

Instead I think he chose someone like Gills or Yeovil in the division above and his career stagnated. He didn’t get the games he needed to push on and ended up being released at the end of his deal and sliding down the leagues. He returned to us, briefly, but looked nowhere near the player he’d been on loan - presumably his confidence crushed. I wonder if he’d choose differently now?

He has said the ambition, lead him to sign despite several offers from EFL clubs. I can only imagine the club have misquoted him when he said, money was the reason for him signing… I don’t think a) we were ever in for him, or b) could even begin to compete with what he was being offered…

To be honest Wrexham on a 3(?) year deal is probably a better bet to be playing L1 football than the likes of Colchester, Barrow, Newport, Rochdale, Stevenage etc. Look how this year’s Conference champions are now favourites to win L2.
