Just thinking back to @BoyWonder2 saying that we are speaking to a Striker with experience and goals at this level, could it be Sim Akinola? Technically not our player and a free agent, scored 15 goals in the 19/20 season at this level under Currie. I for one thought he was a little ray of positivity in the relegation season under Molesley before injuries kicked in so would welcome a short term deal if he is fit enough post injury.
I really wouldn’t have thought so, I think that ship has sailed. His best season was 2 years ago and he’s played very little football in the 2 years since due to injuries. He’ll be 30 by the time the season starts and I don’t really think he’s done enough in a Southend shirt to warrant us offering him a new deal. Wish him all the best but I think he’s here for fitness until he gets an offer elsewhere.

Oh absolutely, I don't think he'd have left Daggers if Kev hadn't asked him to come here.

He came for a wage, don’t kid yourself about anything else he is very money motivated and always has been hence why he left us 4 times now all for more money. He’s absolutely minted I have no idea at his age why he is not retired.

Would not everything depend on much it would take to secure his services and what role he would be willing to accept?
Depending on how much he would cost a twelve month deal could be either be a brilliant or awful piece of business.

I can understand wanting better remuneration and a regular wage for his work though rather than just expenses. Not sure anybody else would have come in for him though, and doubt we would have done if Kev hadn't suggested it, and also doubt he'd have just left Daggers without anything to go to. So my point still stands, I don't think he'd have come here were it not for Maher.

That is very true, I wouldn’t think he want to earn less than his Bromley wages, playing somewhere else. You must be proud of him for scoring a winner at Wembley to win them the FA Trophy 🏆. Who know in future, he could join at an crucial 2nd half of the season and help Southend Utd by helping us back to EFL.
Yes tremendously proud and to be honest as a Blues supporter since the early 60’s I’d love him to pull on the clubs blue shirt. The FA Trophy win was really great but regrettably the manager has seen fit to break that winning side up, and I sense that there maybe an element of unrest at the club. I guess never say never, but as I’ve already said it’s all about money.

Yeah I get what you’re saying. But it wouldn’t surprise me if Kev and co would be slightly nervous given his injury history with us. We’ve turned that corner with our recruitment as all the signings so far have been younger, fitter players with a lot of games under their belts in previous seasons.

If we could get Sim on a 12 month pay as you play deal, or a very modest wage as cover, I wouldn’t be against it. But I really don’t see Sim going for that and he could easily do better than that elsewhere I’d imagine. So on that basis I think we’d be better turning our attention elsewhere. I don’t think he’s shown enough in a Southend shirt to warrant a new deal on first team terms. Most people are judging him on the one good season he had with Barnet two years ago pre-injury. He’d be a big gamble.

I’m pretty sure he’s the type of person that even if he retires he’ll still be watching non-league games on a random Monday evening, chatting to his contacts about the latest next young big thing.

Not many move for pay cuts and Luton, Peterborough and Southend are all significantly bigger clubs with not just more money for him but also bigger recruitment budgets to play with. Barnet less so.

And not to mention we seriously needed the help, so I'm all for it, whether he went for money or not, he's doing a good job earning what he deserves.

No.

From what I can gather, ALL of the released players were given the option to begin pre-season training with us if they weren’t fixed up elsewhere.

Whether Sim, or any of them, can change the management trios mind and get themselves a new deal with us, who knows, but I wouldn’t have thought so.

Thanks @BoyWonder2 - @NZamba Legend called it - get fit and get yourself a free t shirt. Appreciate the confirmation that I was completely utterly wrong 😂

I like it when the club does this, shows good morals.

No need to be salty mate 😀
Not being Salty one bit, our manager missed out with not keeping John and it will but him on the backside. I wish him all the best regardless of where he goes as he did well for us the ones that chant bad things about him are you ones not even old to remember him doing well for us.

Maybe because your 'all about the money' assertion is not entirely true. I'm sure he expects to be rewarded for what he brings to a given club and why shouldn't he? However, the part in bold also suggests he does it because he loves doing what he does, loves the game and finds it hard to imagine a life out of the game.

I'm fine with all of that.

Our budget is bigger than yours if what I read on here about your budget being £1.4-1.5m so not strictly true. We have owners pumping money in not one ******* it dry.

Probably the same idiots (maybe west ham fans) that are hell bent on trying to cause trouble and generate some sort of rivalry that simply isnt there. Ive been to your place numerous times and although weve normally been successful the atmosphere between both sets of fans has always been friendly and welcoming. All three games home and away last season had a very different feel about them which im certain will carry over into this season unfortunately

Oh it’s very true, he even says it himself. If that’s what motivates him then good luck to him. Our board were happy to pay him what he wanted but our manager who is young and foolish did not want his position undermined.
