So Tilson didnt produce the best football you have ever seen at Southend since you have been a regular?

That's a tricky question to answer ......... and I think it is down in part as to how old you are .......... I immediately thought of David Crown, Richard Cadette, Peter Butler, Andy Ansah for instance - most of them are Webb's men I think.

Loved the Tilly days - but I also loved a number of the players that Fry brought in - never dull with him in charge.

I thought a significant problem was that the players Tilly inherited were on high and (relatively) long contracts that left him with very little room to manoeuvre (tricky word to spell) .......... but then again it was one loan signing that was banging in the goals (who was he and where has he disappeared to?) including one against us I remember ..........

I think also that Chris Sutton spend almost the entire budget in the summer, so when Tilly took over there was no money for him to spend.

In my opinion yes played some good football but that has nothing to do with 2 relegation's with us and 1 with linclon

You cant ignore all of his achievements and judge him only on his failures.

We got relegated from the CCC because we were out of our depth, I dont blame him at all for that.

We got relegated from League one because team motivation and squad stability was destroyed. You may be able to maintain motivation when not being paid, the majority of people wouldnt (and trust me worrying about supporting kids is different to worrying about supporting an expensive lifestyle). That said I dont excuse Tilson completely as I think we had a squad for several months capable of survival.

As previously said he took over from Lincoln when they were in the bottom two and they got relegated. He did actually manage to get them out for a while but it wasnt enough.

Nothing above is to be proud of but neither is it evidence that he would take a stable club and turn them into relegation fodder.

In the end how can Tilly be blamed for a lack of motivation him, his coaching staff and the playing squad wasnt being paid from one month to the next. It was not Tillys fault that we got relegated, it was the clubs for not getting finance sorted!!! We had a good enough side for that league and played very well against some of the big teams in league 1 but ultimately we were doomed when you could see on the pitch the players werent interested.

Tilly was never going to succeed at Lincoln realistically no money, not the fans choice and being miles away from his family.

I really hope he get the Gills job to prove alot of doubters wrong in his ability as a manager and for the roots hall faitful once again to give him a great reception. The atmosphere at Lincoln was incredible when we were reunited with Tilly

Nothing to do with the 2 promotions, 2 cup finals, magnificient cup performances either then? Maybe you dont remember them very well?

Tilly would be third for me, behind Webby and Fry ......., with Fry's football, whilst here at the top. Loved the excitement and thought process of Fry's teams of if you score 3, we'll score 4 !!!

People don't seem at all grateful for giving us the best times in recent memory! As has been mentioned, we were out of our depth and financially handicapped in the Championship so coming down was no great surprise, and I lay the blame for League One relegation firmly at the feet of the chairman and members of the board. As for Lincoln, well, he shouldn't have taken the job. It was a club on the way down and I don't think he'd ever have been able to keep them up orput together a team capable of BSP promotion on such a smal budget. As it was, he was still owed money by Southend and needed another job ASAP and so took the Lincoln job on a whim.

I think he'd be a fantastic appointment for Gills.

We bought the wrong players in the championship, funds or not.

Ince is a better bet than Tilson.
However why do clubs usually go for managers who've failed elsewhere?

Southend United owe(d) Tilson nothing. If you read what he actually said it was quite interesting. He kept saying the morally Southend owed him. Which really means that legally we didn't, and he didn't take it to court because he couldn't win.

That doesn't change the fact that Tilson was, in my view, a very successful manager that ultimately failed both here and Lincoln through no fault of his own.

Why? Ince may have a higher profile than Tilson but he's won the square root of bugger all.

It's a fair point about appointing "failed" managers, people like Martin Allen, Steve Cotterill, Hoofroyd, Danny Wilson, Gary Megson & Gary Johnson are good examples.

Yes he was owed. He agreed for his wages to be deferred so that the players could be paid first. He ended up not being paid for several months and left the club having still not received that money. He then took the Lincoln job.....having not received his money.

Youve answered your own question, Clarke is used to a bigger club with better finances.

He did play a massive part in their promotion this year, even if it was with a good budget.

All bigger clubs generally have a higher playing budget.

I very much doubt clarke will get/want the gillingham job , but budget or not he plays attractive football.

Good luck to tilly if he gets the job, except when we smash them home and away.
