Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 4-0 Oldham Athletic

A thought from yesterday. When people (and you know who you are) moaned last season about Kev Maher's tactics and substitution nous, I give you Coker and Mooney. A masterclass of timing Kev, you have my eternal gratitude.

And another thing while I'm at it, I spent a little while on the Oldham fans board last week and they were a decent bunch, but fully expected to give us a serious thonging. It gave me no pleasure to thank them for the three points and wish them well for the rest of the season. The point of mentioning this is that they have now gone into incredulous meltdown and dispair, so it's not just the Zone that has that disease.

What a day and what a performance from everyone, both on the pitch and in the stands....And I include Oldham fans.

The finishing for all 4 goals will give you a good insight for the game. You know its good when the 4th official trumps his unexplainable 6mins in the first half to 10 mins extra for the second......He was enjoying watching the "Blue Brazil' so much he didn't want to go home.

Unplayable pitch, unfit side, lack of friendlies, no one on the bench......Go large on an Oldham win, wouldn't be surprised if its 3 or 4 today. The joy of us all be totally wrong and for some the happiest losing bet you've ever made :Winking:

We may be in the NL but is there single player or member of staff you could dislike. There are all top boys and girls. Be honest even when doing well as a club there are players who irritate you but not any of them.....God bless them all and may the patron Saint of injuries look over them.

Yes he came for everything. At one point in the second half, he came for a cross, their player hit Ndi hard while he was collecting the ball and their player just bounced off him, hit the deck and needed treatment 😂
Wasn’t at the game today - but this sounds so promising. We know Colin is a “shot stopper” but sounds like other parts of his game are moving forward (someone else mentioned his kicking was composed). He could be a huge asset for us. Where did we find him?

He was a Tilson recommendation after playing at South Essex College.

There is a good example on the diversity vlog of Colin catching under pressure. They were trying ton box him in and making sure he knew it for at least 20 seconds before the in swinging corner. He riggled free and took whack but sent them clear message.

Colin has always been able to kick but last season Kev wanted that most annoying of tactics.....Hit the touchline and its OK if it goes out. A lot of our fans would howl at Colin and it was doing the lad no good.

Yesterday it was down the middle, apart from his moment of madness during a mad minute. Even our defenders were happy to use the Cardwell long option. Again a tactic that suits us and Oldham struggled with in the first 10. It was that sustained pressure that resulted in CP's goal. Which was also a better finish than some give him credit for.

To the 3 Amigos more of the same please. Lets be far more direct in the first 15. Cardwell does more than enough in the air as he doesn't even have to win it. He is also strong when he is baring down on a defender and CP is always yapping at their ankles.

HC made some great runs in the second half but wasn't rewarded. He opened up the space for Mooney's goal and thoroughly deserved his goal.

Fantastic!

James Walker's mum loved the reception you sll gave her just before KO. An update next week re his promising progress thanks to all the additional therapy sessions your kind donations have helped to buy

Just one odd question from yesterday. What was the minutes silence for at the start? I didn't hear any tannoy announcement.
It wasn't announced, even he didn't know! lol ... apparently, it was the NL chairman who passed recently.

An England, Chelsea, Spurs and West Ham forward once famously remarked on TV that football is a funny old game. He could equally have said it is full of surprises. We spent a goodly portion of the latter part of last week scanning Zone for news that Marcus Dackers had joined. He didn't. But had he done so would we have seen Kev call him on at 1-0 yesterday in an attempt to secure victory? Instead it fell to Oli Coker to answer the summons and produce a wonderful cameo, with a goal, an assist and some inspired passing.

And as if to reinforce Greavsie's point, this morning Blues sit proudly top of the table, with a goal difference of +4. Not bottom with a goal difference of - 4. Yep, it sure is a funny old game.

Well done to everyone involved in the result from the staff, fans, players and coaches. Yesterday was testament to what can be achieved at this club. We now need some owners /investors to carry forward the good work and see us return to the EFL.

COYB!!!

Extremely pleased and proud of Oli. Took his opportunity. He's a decent player and a really nice genuine lad.

That is a very, very good point.

Forget their outstanding loyalty, forget your opinion of them as football players or management, as people they are fantastic. A genuine team of likeable people.

They are great ambassadors for this great Club of ours and long may that continue.

We’ve had enough arseholes play for this Club, enough people stealing a living, enough people who couldn’t give a toss about Southend. That is an accusation you can’t throw at any of them.

As you say, the funny thing is if we could have signed couple of players then we would never have seen that great 20 mins from young Coker....My favourite moment of so many in day.

An experienced CM of the bench would have kept the ball or taken a foul rather than think he is Socrates (WC 1982) and dipping a shoulder to make the keeper think its going top right before firing bottom left. Oli even had to be told to head for the corner for the all important momentum and time killing celebration.

An experienced CM would have taken into the corner rather than pick out Harry C for a bullet header.

Tops marks for Oli C, he even even looked shy and humble at all the applause when the walked round the pitch. A kind of "Whats all the fuss about" Its just my job moment......What great quality that is for any young man.

So @SamuraiBlue comes to the Hall today with his wife and family after 14 years away. Well mate, if you bring that sort of good luck with you then please come back again. Really pleased it was a good performance for your return.
Thanks mate. The boys and wife really enjoyed it. I used to go to pretty much all the home games in the 90s and early 2000s, plus some away games so it was great to be back at the Hall after all this time. Unfortunately we're heading back to Japan soon so we won't be able to offer our good luck charm services for any more games this season.
GOOD LUCK FOR THE FUTURE, UTB!

The substitutions were perfect from Kev today … when they had there player sent off they went to a 4-2-3 almost giving us the run of the middle so Kev packed that out to give us the time and space hence the 2 goals from distance today … well done Kev, Darren and Bentley !!

That is spot on BoyWonder

We all need to remember that SUFC is not all about Ron. Do ourselves a favour and enjoy the love for a few hours.
