Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-4 Charlton Athletic

Should have done better with the first 2 goals, non existent marking.
3rd and 4th goals were very messy.

We fought hard today against Charlton and the ref who did seem to give them a lot of leeway.
Think if we put that much effort into our league games then we are play off contenders easily.
Very proud of every player today though. Every goal that went in for us felt exciting and when the 3rd went in, I had the level of excitement of the Stephen Humphrys goal against Sunderland and not had that feeling since that day. Wonderful day out, great advert for cup football and the Charlton fans will go home feeling mightily relieved

An entertaining cup tie. We deserved to take it to penalties then it’s a flip of a coin. Showed Charlton too much respect early with really poor defending, could not deal with their 6,6 powerhouse number 11 Leaburn. At 20 yr old he looks a serious prospect and took his header well. Fought well to get back into it. Pepple & Bridge our best outlets. Bonne still flatters to deceive. As for Collin, he needs taking out the team for his own wellbeing and development, his kicking was mostly ok today but he’s a liability coming for crosses when not rooted to his line, we got lucky a few times before his & Taylor’s mix up cost us their winner. Unfortunately unlike an outfield player, as a keeper you rarely get way with a mistake like that. Should give the team belief that we can charge up that NL table and make playoffs!

Very proud of the lot of them. What a game, great effort and despite not seeing the result as important before the game, when you come that close to a well deserved shootout the manner of the last minute goal conceded does hurt a bit.

The boys deserved the penalties, great atmosphere, chuffed with the afternoon really.

Thought we were the better team overall and their number 11 was the reason we didn’t win in regulation time IMO.

The last goal, highlights exactly why kev wants another goalkeeper.

On to the league and away we go up that table. Come on you blues.

Not knocking anyone in the slightest but the 1st goal was poor to concede … Gus needed to block the cross and to leave a 6ft 5 plus centre forward a free header is madness, that being said .. I thought we looked the better side today and certainly didn’t look 2 levels below Charlton.

The back 3 I thought had a very good game, lapse in concentration at the end but they battled well all game.

Bim is simply unplayable at the moment, the lads strength is one of the best I’ve seen from a centre forward in a Southend shirt.

The winning goal was a proper kick in bollocks but for me Collin needs to be more dominant in his penalty area, first thing your taught as a goalkeeper is to not hesitate and he does it every time, I feel if Jeacock was in goal today we won that game.

Can’t say I agree mate - at least not the first which showed the difference between L1 and where we are. Early cross (without needing five touches), pinpoint accuracy to the biggest bloke in the box, and an exceptional finish just inside the far post. Header was soooo good, I wonder how many times he’d manage that in 100 chances. It was literally perfect.

Second one, again, perfect delivery and expertly dispatched. Less about us not doing our jobs, more a gap in class on the execution.

Two moments of quality we’re just not used to dealing with at our level. IMHO.

Today felt like the SUFC of old. Big game. Big crowd. The lads put in a massive shift and gave a team 2 divisions higher an almighty battle. So proud to be a shrimper tonight.

We were so close to non-existence. Thank you Justin and the consortium for saving our beloved football club and giving us those occasions back.

OK. Colin made a crucial mistake at the end.
What happened to team spirit?
Not one player or staff went to console him.
Not a bad shout that but, genuinely, I think they were all just dead on their feet and dealing with their own emotions. What matters is whether they’re rallying around him now, which I’d bet they are.

Also seems to me that there were two or three players at fault for the final goal anyway in midfield and defence even before Collin had to try his best to deal with the final part of it.

I agree that Leaburns header was great in both the direction and execution and Collin would never have got near it but Bridge and Ralph were marking him and neither even challenged him, they seemed to just watch him. I would always expect a challenge, even if it was poor but they both seemed to just look at each other after.

That said, I'm still 100% proud of all the players today for keeping us in the game to the bitter end
