Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-1 Aldershot Town

We used our hospitality from our player sponsorship, with an upgrade, in the 1906, and had the company of David Krayling and 13 of his family in there with us. It was good company, if a little lively with three excitable, young lads! A few little insights from him - Kev likes the pitch well watered, feels it suits us; he tries to keep his hands in his pockets during a match to avoid the yellow cards for "body language"!!! Didn't work last night!!! They hope that some of the loanees might sign for us at the end of the season, they all seem to really like it and want to be here; Nick Hayes was desperate to come back here, absolutely hated it at Barnet!

Enjoyed the match, though still remain unconvinced about Walker. Thought the much maligned Bridge had a decent enough game, and taking him off to shore up the defence was probably the right move as Aldershot were making a lot of progress down that wing at that time. No problem with Golding winning MOTM, he was immense, though I thought all of the central defenders had a good game.

Midfield seemed much better than Saturday, Husin literally pulled his socks up - leaving the bindings in the middle of the pitch! LCP showed what a bright prospect he is and, when he came on, Coker was improved though still not at his best. Morton was subdued but still effective. Gus and Bridge worked well down each side - need to look for an earlier pass out to them both sometimes, missing that extra one to a defender. Gus did, uncharacteristically, misplace several passes though. Bridge got several decent crosses over, not least the one that led to Husin's goal.

Up top, well, shows how different opinions can be, I thought Bonne had a really good game, made a real nuisance of himself and used wile and guile to our advantage. Walker's miss will no doubt haunt him for some time - surely it was easier to score than to miss?! Would like to see Hopper and Bonne given a chance together.

Didn't recognise Kendall when he came on, thought he tried too hard and his touch let him down again. As I said after Saturday, he's raw, and needs some work, but hopefully will come good.

Still get so frustrated seeing every player back when defending corners - very noticeable when Aldershot left two up each time!

Hayes - 7
Gus - 6.5
Taylor - 7.5
Golding - 8
Ralph - 7.5
Bridge - 7
Husin - 7
Morton - 7
Parillon - 7.5
Walker - 6.5
Bonne - 7.5

Subs:
Coker for LCP - 6
Hopper for Walker - 7
Kendall for Bonne - 6.5
Goodliffe for Bridge - n/a

Thought Aldershot were a decent enough team, saw some genuine sincerity in the greetings between the two managers before the players came out. Never been a team I've liked but they're nowhere near the worst in this league.

Golding and Bonne different class. I think that they are at a different level tactically and nous, other players can’t raise to their speed of thought. Bonne won so many flick on’s but Waker couldn’t read the game to benefit from them. Walker is not the answer imo. Bonne shows a bit of $hithousery too which others lack. Our team is just too soft.

Midfield were playing as individuals, and there was many many times when there was lack of movement and no options for the player in possession. Their no7 probably had his easiest game of the season, constantly left unmarked and not picked up for their goal.

The back three worked hard, as did Gus, can’t believe there is not a groove on the pitch marking Gus’s efforts.

I thought although Leon obviously has talent he seemed to be lost tactically at times, he was knackered before half time. This is not meant as a criticism for he has only just stepped up.

Overall, a win is a win, and winning ugly is necessary sometimes, pitch looked awful.

Rumours that their no10 wants sign for us.. didn’t look good enough to me!

UTB
I'm glad someone else sees Bonne how I do

Slept through the match, I’m afraid. Kick off at 3.45 am here in Saigon. 32 deg yesterday and literally one million motorbikes. Play offs? No one has spotted Rochdale two points behind and FIVE games in hand.
Rochdale gained only 5 points from their last 5 games so let's hope that form continues for their games in hand. They're sometimes going to be playing three games per week.

It would be interesting to see the pairing of Hooper and Boone up front from the start of a game. It might just work...

Pleased - Southend United boss Kevin Maher (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher was delighted with the spirit of his side after they dug deep to beat Aldershot Town 2-1 at Roots Hall.

Goals from Noor Husin and Gus Scott-Morris saw the Shrimpers pick up all three points.

And Maher was pleased with how Blues were able to grind out the win.

"I'm delighted with the win and the three points which is the most important thing,” said Maher.

“We've had a lot of games recently and the most important thing is getting the three points.

"Sometimes the performance doesn't matter and, in games like that, you just have to find the way.

"We probably haven't done that enough this season in terms of winning games when we haven't played brilliantly so I'm delighted with the character shown."

Husin put the Shrimpers ahead after 52 minutes before Scott-Morriss bagged his 13th goal of the season to make it 2-0.

But Maher admitted it was difficult for his team to create chances on a tough pitch.

"It's so difficult on that pitch, it's so bobbly,” said Maher.

“It's slick and there are so many bobbles it takes an age to get it under control.

"You've got to play percentages at the right time and when we got in there in the second half we showed a bit of quality in the final third.

"It was a great pick out by Bridgey (Jack Bridge) and a great, composed finish from Noor.

"Obviously the second one is pleasing as well because Macca (Bonne) has got in there and Gussy is at the back post like he does.

"It was really good play in the end."

The Shrimpers also had to defend well late on after Cameron Hargreaves got Aldershot back in the game with a low shot 12 minutes from time.

But Maher thought Blues should have been given a free-kick in the build up to the Shots’ goal.

"It looked like a clear foul in the build up to their goal but I don't know what the ref was doing towards the end there,” said the Shrimpers boss.

"It's for both teams and both benches I have to say.

“We didn't know what was going to get given.

"It gave them a lifeline in the game and we had to defend at times.

"You're going to have to do that though."

And Maher again reiterated the result was all that mattered.

“It's the stage of the season where you just have to keep on getting points on the board and we've done that tonight so we're really pleased,” said Maher.

"You can't win pretty every week and you have to find a way to grind results out.

"I'm delighted we've done that tonight."

Pleased with his team - Aldershot Town boss Tommy Widdrington (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

ALDERSHOT Town boss Tommy Widdrington thought his side gave Southend United their toughest game in four weeks at Roots Hall tonight.

Shots were beaten 2-1 by the Shrimpers.

But Widdrington was pleased with how Aldershot performed.

“Sometimes as a manager you go into the dressing room after you’ve played a game and lost and you’ve got reasons to point fingers and have a go at people but I thought to a man tonight every single one of us was excellent,” Widdrington told the club’s YouTube channel.

“The lads really played well and on another night that could end 4-4 or 4-3 to us.

“I came to watch Fylde and Halifax here when I wasn’t too well and I’m telling you now that’s the hardest game Southend have had in four weeks, without a shadow of a doubt.”

And Widdrington believes those watching would have been entertained.

“If you’re a neutral I think it would’ve been a really good game to watch and there was some good quality football,” said the Shots boss.

“Both sets of players gave everything they had but at the end of the day they’ve scored two and we’ve got once so I can’t argue with that.

“How we’ve not scored another goal I don’t know with the amount of chances we had and certainly one of them but things like that happen and you don’t always get the rub of the green.”

However, Widdrington was keen to stress he would be remaining upbeat.

“We’ve come here and gone toe to toe with a proper, good National League football club,” said Widdrington.

“If the game had gone on another couple of minutes I think we would’ve got an equaliser because were that much in the game.

“But we have to dust ourselves down and get back on the horse for Hartlepool on Saturday now.”

What is very clear is that proper money needs to be spent by COSU on pitch improvements as soon as the season ends. I know the club love hiring it out, but IMO it just doesn't give the required time for the pitch to be properly sorted out doing that. The ground staff are right up against it every season, trying to keep it semi-playable. The surface is nowhere near good enough for a top NL side and it's been allowed to slide for years now. That's no fault of the ground staff either, they can only work with what they are given.

they hire it out and use the money to strip and re-lay it mate
but I get your point - it’s relaid every summer so maybe the ground staff aren’t pulling their weight in looking after it?

You say Kendall is “raw” but he’s 24 and has played over 100 senior games.

7 points from the three home matches is fine. The big test is that five of the next seven are away from home. The squad certainly looks stronger now than in the first half of the season but apart from the excellent GSM we are well short of players who can consistently finish and take the big goal chances that come their way. Looking at the table it is a big ask to get into the playoffs considering everything. I have a feeling that we could frustratingly finish in eight place.

Debbie downer realist alert..

3 points yay... against Aldershot.

Expectations... Id expect us to beat them. Id expect us to be upper mid table as a default.

The problem was and still is playing well enough consistently to hit the upper reaches of the table.
Whilst I love the optimism, it also smacks of desperation

that we were so ugly again.. "Great to win when playing badly"... that's a phrase that normally applies to teams doing really well and having an off day. Not sure it really applies here.
'Expectations... Id expect us to beat them. Id expect us to be upper mid table as a default.'

No doubt you would have expected to FGR to beat both Braintree and Ebbsfleet on Saturday and last night. I would suggest that in this league nothing can be 'expected'.
A lot is up for grabs and last night we grabbed it.

Unsurprisingly both Rochdale or Aldershot gave us nothing.

Make no mistake points in the NL are hard earned.

Felt that Golding and LP bought something different to the game but again Bridge fails to deliver although he was better than Rochdale. Definitely an area that needs improvement.
Was a bit squeaky bum time near the end as Aldershot were pressing to equalise and nearly did but we held on for another confidence boasting 3 points.

For anyone who didn't see the game and reads the match and post match thread you will get complete false picture of last night. As ORM says this forum has become full of ill informed trollop. Same few Maher haters, desperate to post one line of nonsense.

Meanwhile the rest of us who actually attend had great evening. Some real good football from both sides and some excellent individual performances.

With news of a delayed KO and no sign of Aldershot messages. I managed another couple of pints. No wonder the Railway sold out of Guiness pre match. Turns out their coach driver decided to go North round the M25. Their players who came by car went South and made it on time.

We all wanted Parillon to start. He rewarded us with a great full debut and was easily my MOM. Golding and Bonne were not far behind and at last a decent Husin shift. One that went unnoticed but really impressed me was Hayes. He looks good in every aspect of keeping. By making it look easy a some on here think it is. Certainly better than the 6 some have given him.

Maher should get credit for his management of Parillon. Some of you wanted him to start first game. If he had made a few nervy mistakes the usual suspects would have been all over him before his career had started. After feeling his feet last night was just the right time. What great hour he had. Plus Kev was 100% correct in taking him off. If you don't understand why them pipe down.

When you watch the highlights you will see him play JB in of our first goal. The best bit is Bridges marker gets the wrong side because of the threat of Parillon going past his man. Thats what exciting players do. They create space for team mates by just being on the ball. Let alone running at defences.

As I say plenty of positivity in the far post at half time. Everyone I spoke to expected us to win second half. Two good goals and one disallowed for not very much should have been that. But full credit to Shots as they gave it a real go. Best strike of the night for their goal. Kev was booked because he was quite rightly angry that a foul was given in the build up to that corner.

A few nerves in the 90's but we see it out. At this stage win is all that matters. And no we don't have the right to roll over anyone. Out 0f 8 games last night 6 were decided by one goal and FGR had a 0-0. Its the business end of the season and to make the play-offs we will just have to suffer more wins in tight games.

So people embrace it and enjoy it.

I must have been in a really good mood last night, as contrary to what a lot of people are saying on here I really enjoyed the game.

Yes, the quality wasn't there (it rarely is), but refreshing to see both teams actually trying to win a a game of football for once. End to end and plenty of incident - unfortunately not many games like that these days, not just Southend but all pro-football.

Golding MOM for me.

Quite a lot of Zoners praised Bonne.
OK, it's a game of opinions and he tried.
But, that's the least you might expect from a professional footballer. However, the end product was iffy for the most part.
But Walker? He made Bonne look like Salah.
I'm honestly trying to think of one productive thing JW did in the time he was on the pitch - and he missed a decent chance to win it at the end on Saturday too.

And as for Coker...pleeeze.
Around 88 minutes, one of theirs cut in from the left and ran passed OC like he wasn't there. Remember the latter had only been on the pitch 16 minutes - and he gave up a half-hearted token chase.

BUT, as said elsewhere and often, Golding, Taylor and Ralph were the glue.
GSM eventually woke up; Husin had a half-decent game, and Morton has made himself indispensable.

PS. Given Hopper's and Kendall's average sub performances, where is Waldron? Injured? Or out of favour?
