On target - Noor Husin celebrates his goal (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United midfielder Noor Husin feels the Shrimpers are building momentum at the perfect time of the season.

The Shrimpers moved eighth in the National League standings following Tuesday night's 2-1 win against Aldershot Town at Roots Hall.

And Husin now has his sights set on the play-offs.

"It's taken us a while to get going but hopefully we can have a strong finish now," said Husin.

"We're building momentum at a good time and our aim has to be the play-offs.

"We know what happened last season and we were disappointed to miss out.

"But we've got to use that and hopefully get in there this season."

The Shrimpers' win against the Shots made it seven points out of a possible nine from three games in quick succession.

And Husin was pleased to set Blues on their way to win by scoring his first goal of the season.

"It's taken a bit too long for me," said midfielder.

"I didn't really have a pre-season which was difficult after having the operation but every time I go out there I try to give my best for the team.

"It's taken some time but as Bridgey (Jack Bridge) had it I thought I'd hold my run on the edge of the box and he managed to pick me up.

" I managed to slot it in so it was nice but I want to get more goals and assists."

Husin was followed on to the score-sheet by Gus Scott-Morriss but Blues were forced to withstand a late spell of Aldershot pressure to come out on top.

"When the final whistle went I think we were all relieved but they all count," said Husin.

"I'm delighted and it's a great three points.

"We needed to win to back up the recent results and I'm very happy.

"But now we need to build on it again at Tamworth this weekend."

Only the second home game of the season for me, but was good to be back at RH under the lights as my only other home game was Eastleigh which was an excellent performance.

I thought we were the better team but squandered some good chances. The first half we looked a bit shakey (GSM in particular) but when we got the ball and tried to play, we opened Aldershot up quite easily, especially down the left. Morton and Husin never really got a good grip on the game and managed the tempo, but we were fairly untroubled for most of the game. Aldershots frontline faded badly and having the extra defender helped us deal with their pressure in the second half.

I felt that Bonne and Walker worked hard and well together, although both were guilty of being caught in possession at times, and clearly Walker squandered a great chance.

I thought Parillon was excellent as an attacking midfielder, and created some great chances, before fading in the second half. Husin took his goal well, and GSM made up for a poor first half with attacking the back post for a tap in.

Agree with other that Hayes' distribution isn't great, but he protected the goal well. Also agree with others that Kendall seemed well off the pace when he came on. Has he been ill or something? Hopper flicked the ball on really nicely, and got his boot in as well.

Ratings:

Hayes - 6.5
GSM - 6
Taylor - 7 (MOTM)
Golding - 7
Ralph - 6.5
Bridge - 6
Morton - 6
Husin - 6.5
Parillon - 7
Bonne - 6.5
Walker - 6.5

I may have missed it burried in this thread somewhere, but how on earth did the referee award a free kick to Aldershot following Harry Taylor's perfectly timed tackle in the second half down by the West Stand?!
That has to be the craziest award of a free kick I've ever seen. It summed up his night and quite rightly Kev pointed out afterwards that nobody knew what he was going to do next.

I could see from the East Greens it was a well timed perfectly good tackle.

Meanwhile the rest of us who actually attend had great evening. Some real good football from both sides and some excellent individual performances.
Exactly this.

My companion for the evening was very impressed with the whole game and the attitude of both teams.
She is a seaso at a Championship club and said last night was a much better spectacle that a lot of the boring rubbish she see in the second tier.

Me too. I felt it was a good old-fashioned hard fought game between two lower league teams. Not one for the football purists, or those obsessed with formations, but plenty of goal mouth action. Yes, both teams could have scored more but the strikers who mis-hit wouldn't be playing at this level if they put every chance away. This game reminded me of years gone by football and I enjoyed it.

Well said young lady. It was classic under lights match. More Friday games would've been worth 10/12 points for us this season. Seems our our most miserable fans save themselves for Saturday......And their all men. Girl power I say.

Having seen a reel on Instagram of our second goal it becomes clear how important were two contributions from Tom H. First his very deft glancing header to Bonne and then the lay off for the cross. Bonne then losing his footing in the six yard box allowed the ball safe passage to Gus for his neat tuck in far post.

You’re right. I called out his brilliance in an earlier post. Sadly, he was also responsible for the one that got chalked off for his shenanigans with the goalkeeper and defender. I don’t mind a bit of ****housery but you’ve got to be a bit more subtle.

A mixed bag for Hopper this one, but I love what he brings to the team.
