Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-1 Aldershot Town

A relief to leave last night with the 3 points. I welcomed the changes to the team and thought on paper we looked a strong balanced team with more attacking intent. However the changes actually made us very disjointed and we struggled for most of the game for fluidity. GSM kept losing possession first half, LCP obviously looked as if it was his first start. Clearly very talented but him and teammates need to get accustomed to each other. Credit to Husin who had his best game for a long while, does the off the ball work so well. I thought Jack Bridge also looked brighter and we are better with him at LWB. He got in some good early crosses and certainly keeps defences more occupied than when Ralph plays there. Second half a sublime Husin finish for the first goal, most players would have slashed at it instead of Noor’s calm side foot. Second goal came just as Aldershot were cranking up the pressure. Felt sorry for Bonne who should have put the cross in, but thankfully goal hanger GSM was on the spot to nick another goal. This did not phase Aldershot who continued to stream forward and put us under pressure to make sure it was an uncomfortable final 15 minutes.

Hayes 6.5
Taylor 7
Golding 8
Ralph 7
GSM 7
Husin 8 MOTM
Morton 7
LCP 7
Bridge 7.5
Walker 6
Bonne 6.5

Hopper 6
Coker 5
Kendall 5
Goodliffe 5

Noor gets my MOTM just over Golding who had a good game. Noor has a great engine and as said does all the unseen off the ball work so well also providing quality when needed in front of goal. Interesting to see Aldershot leave 2 men up top when defending corners. I wish KM would adopt this as even when we have everyone back not only do we have nobody to chase clearances and counter and the ball comes straight back, we still left their scorer unmarked at the edge of the box for him to pick his spot. Having reviewed the match videos posted so far I'd like to withdraw my statement that Walkers effort was miss of the season that I made in the match thread. That I think remains with Kendall from a few games ago.

Apologies Mr Walker
There are actually three other vlogs of last night's game besides @D1versity's - when have we ever been so popular, lol?
Out of four three show Walker's miss from the left and behind the goal. Believe me, it was as bad as you first feared!

I’ve not been overly impressed by Hopper so far

If you get a chance to see the highlights, his headed flick-on that leads to the cross for Gus’s goal was sublime! Look incredible in real time.

Hopper also won probably 6 out of the 7 headed duels he went in for. For me, that’s a player we’ve been missing and our second goal proved it.

Lots of changes in the team at the moment.

That's because he played an early ball for once. He needs to do that more often

He didn’t play an early ball. He took maybe four touches, deliberately delaying it until Noor was in a goalscoring position.

But the reason he was able to do that is he actually got given the ball for once this season in a decent position with space as Walker had pulled out to the left which occupied the defence and gave that bit of hesitation that an intelligent player such as Bridge can exploit.

That’s the type of movement we haven’t had enough of. I really hope it’s in the highlights or Diversity’s video because it’s such a good example of intelligent but seemingly innocuous movement making space for others but in the first half the Walker shot tipped round the post after he cut inside was all made by Bridge’s movement and extra touches in his own half. Bridge was played a nothing ball to him on the touchline on the halfway line with his back to goal and nothing on. Bridge took a few touches whilst running back towards his own goal, dragging a couple of defenders with him, he angled his run inside in order to clear the space for Morton to be able to clip the ball down the line to Walker. If Bridge plays that first time that move doesn’t work, it only works as he takes those extra touches which drags his man inside to clear a route for Morton down the touch line for the ball to be played into space for Walker to run onto. I’m normally all in favour of the first time pass but sometimes you need the player with the ability to take extra touches to draw men in. If we can get Parillon on the same wavelength we will start to get some real joy out of the left with Bridge, Walker and Parillon all making space for one another and having the ability to beat a man.

Golding is another who can take an extra few touches and play on the move. That allowed us to play out from the back as by bringing the ball out from the back every time he took another touch it changes the angles and opens up different passing lanes. The likes of Taylor, Goodliffe and to a lesser extent Ralph tend to just take one touch to control it and another to get rid of it. Taylor actually has shown himself to be proficient at beating his man but is such a limited passer he can’t carry the ball and scan for passes at the same time. Golding if he doesn’t like his options takes a touch and sees what additional options that opens up. That increases his options exponentially. We need more players who can do that. Bridge can, Golding can, Morton is maybe showing signs he can, Parillon can certainly run with the ball. It makes us a lot less predictable when there isn’t that same rhythm of control, pass, control, pass.

I may have missed it burried in this thread somewhere, but how on earth did the referee award a free kick to Aldershot following Harry Taylor's perfectly timed tackle in the second half down by the West Stand?!
That has to be the craziest award of a free kick I've ever seen. It summed up his night and quite rightly Kev pointed out afterwards that nobody knew what he was going to do next.

Indeed. Strangely, after having the infamous chant of "youre just a **** with a whistle" sang at him directly after, his game improved imo. What the actual 😄

I lost my S over that. Joke decision.

We got the win and looking from the pressure we were under later in the game, maybe that was one of those games that last year, without the squad depth, we would have drawn maybe?

Two things I was really disappointed with:

1. Walker's total lack of composure to finish that guilt edge chance inside the six yard box.

2. From the corner we conceded, forgetting the suspected foul in their build up, but no-one on the edge of the box to deal with exactly that kind of ball coming out of the six yard box? Really!

That was the set up we were taught at Wickford Town Under 11's for christ sake!

Attacking have someone lurking, just as Aldershot did. Defending have someone on the edge to counter the "lurker" and to finish off clearing any loose ball from that area to the area of striker that would be around the half way line.

If we'd have set up like that, the last 12 minutes or so would have been a whole lot less nervous.

Still we won, 7 points from 9 and was are in the mix. Still a long way to go, but a result on Saturday now and we will have those immediately above us worried.
