Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-1 Aldershot Town

Aldershot are far better than their position in the table suggests. Any other team and I’d say I thought they deserved something out of that… but it’s Alder****, so **** ‘em.

Wasn’t pretty at all. I thought we struggled to get the ball under control for most of the game. We struggled against their width in the second half & the ball refused to stick up top. Yet we ground out an ugly win.

That’ll do.

Unbeaten in three now. Another winnable game on the horizon. I felt we needed 9 points from our Feb fixtures to stay in the hunt. Who knows….

Well @GBJ, as that is clearly no longer possible let's hope for 10 instead?

Have to credit the defence for the most part for that win.
Headers and legs where it mattered,
although Aldershot's position in the league is misleading. For an NL struggler, they were pretty decent.
Forwards? Hmm...still not a lot to choose from is there?
Golding was fantastic. Time and time again, his head and legs got to the ball first.

Just hope something clicks and we hit the form that these players should be capable of . Is it the tactics and set up that is holding us back as we seem unable to dominate games .Kev again dodged a bullet as the crowd would have turned if we had thrown away a two goal lead from a very average performance

A pretty poor game. Aldershot first half just continually launched the ball and we got dragged into a poor game.

Wasn't sure about the supposed front 3 tonight. Not sure Leon is a number 9, Bonne had a good game and we could and should have scored several times before we actually did. Walkers miss was horrendous.

We looked to have scored a goal that was ruled out for nothing or did I imagine that?

The ref was another poor one. Literally falling for ****housery all game. Players falling over for the slightest touch.

We looked like we may throw it away at the end but saw it out.

Golding was decent but a good few players appeared below par this evening.

Never had time for aldershot ever since that game when the lights went out at their place and cost us big time. They also brought a firm down last year and caused aggro. Wouldn't shed any tears if they get relegated which looks likely.

These Tuesday games are throwing up all sorts of results and performances all over this league. To be able to secure 3 points tonight, massive. Their keeper werent as good tonight as the away game.
Golding, Taylor and Ralph were immense at the back.
A few off performances, so i'll take a win. We were all over them in both halves really, but look powder puff near goal.
That's twice we should have battered Alder****.

What an odd game. First half was end to end and, but for some of typical profligate ways, we could have led before half time. I have been unconvinced about Walker and tonight made it worse.
Too many players out of sorts. Fortunately we played on the front foot and nicked the points.
I felt Aldershot were all about effort. Their players were not up to muster compared to ours but, proving a point, they play on the front foot and nearly earned something against a better team. It's the way to play.
I'm hoping today was just a poor day at the office. It appeared disjointed and littered with too many individual errors. I still believe there is a lot more to come from this team and I think they are going in the right direction. UTB

The disallowed goal was right in front of me but there is so much **** going on at corners. Tbf, it seemed like the ref blew for a foul by Hopper just before Ralph headed in.

A disjointed, ragged performance, but a crucial 3 points in the bag is all that matters at least stage of the season.

First half we struggled to string 3 passes together with Gus giving the ball away on numerous occasions. We were slow to react and were not picking up any of the second balls. Only young Leon came out of that half with any credit.

We really seemed to struggle with the heavy, bobbly pitch tonight and were left hanging at the end as Aldershot piled forwards. They may not have the greatest team, but I thought they kept going right to the end and broke forwards well at pace.
It makes you wonder why they insist on putting the sprinklers on before every Home match

3 points all that matters and about time we had the rub of the green thought they were better than the table suggests always looked dangerous on the break leaving 3 forward 19 points from the last 10 games carry that on and see where it takes us

Funny game. Noor and Taylor good for the 90. Morton good first half and poor in the second (including I think a terrible header which set up their goal). Gus and Golding not great first half, but Golding in particular was great in the second.

The ref was poor and missed a clear foul which led to them hitting the post, and another when they won the corner for their goal.

The pitch was dire, and given the directness of Aldershot I think that suited them more than us.

Matchwinner - Gus Scott-Morriss celebrates his goal (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SECOND-HALF goals from Noor Husin and Gus Scott-Morriss saw Southend United record a 2-1 win against Aldershot Town at Roots Hall tonight.

Husin fired the Shrimpers in front with his first goal of the season before Scott-Morriss netted from close range to put the hosts in control.

However, a deflected effort from Cameron Hargreaves got Aldershot back into the game and meant Blues had to survive a nervy ending to record all three points.

The match was delayed 15 minutes due to Aldershot’s late arrival but once underway Josh Walker saw an early effort tipped wide of the left post by Aldershot goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst before the Shrimpers striker registered a contender for miss of the season.

The opening goal of the game looked certain when Leon Parillon hooked the ball back into a dangerous area but Walker somehow volleyed his shot over the crossbar from inside the six yard box.

Moments later, Parillon – who was making his first start for the Shrimpers – saw a 25 yard shot parried out by Dewhurst before Walker appeared to waste another decent opening as he failed to make a clean connection from Jack Bridge’s left wing corner.

After surviving the scares, Aldershot hit back with Josh Barrett having a well-struck 20 yard shot pushed wide of the left post by Blues goalkeeper Nick Hayes.

After the break, the Shrimpers came close to scoring when a left wing corner from Jack Bridge bobbled across the face of goal.

But Blues were not to be denied for long and broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute, with Husin on target.

The attacking midfielder was picked out by an accurate left wing cross from Bridge and scored with a neatly taken right footed shot from just inside the penalty area.

Shortly after Husin’s first goal of the season, the Shrimpers came close to making it 2-0 when James Golding volleyed over following another right wing corner from James Morton.

Aldershot soon hit back with Kai Corbett having a long range shot smothered by Hayes before the visitors came within a whisker of drawing back level when Josh Barrett sent a low shot against the inside of the left post when an equaliser seemed certain.

The Shots immediately threatened again with Theo Widdrington having a long range shot parried away by Hayes before the Shrimpers keeper gathered a low effort from Jack Barham at the second attempt.

In a bid to stem Aldershot’s spell of pressure, Blues boss Kevin Maher made a double change in the 68th minute with Oli Coker and Tom Hopper entering the action in place of Parillon and Walker.

The changes made an immediate impression too as ,with 72 minutes on the clock, Southend doubled their lead with Scott-Morriss on target for the 13th time this season.

The goal again came following a move down the left hand side which saw Husin’s cross flicked on by Bonne which allowed a sliding Scott-Morriss to hit the back of the net from close range.

Southend soon made their third change of the evening, with Charley Kendall taking the place of Bonne up top.

But the visitors immediately got back into the game when a right wing corner was cleared only far as the edge of the penalty area where Hargreaves scored with a deflected shot from 20 yards.

Blues were angered that a free-kick was not awarded in the build up to the corner and boss Maher was yellow carded for his subsequent protests.

Maher soon opted to strengthen his defence with Ben Goodliffe coming on for Bridge but it was Aldershot pushing late on with substitute Maxwell Mullins heading wide of the left post from close range in the dying seconds.

Golding and Bonne different class. I think that they are at a different level tactically and nous, other players can’t raise to their speed of thought. Bonne won so many flick on’s but Waker couldn’t read the game to benefit from them. Walker is not the answer imo. Bonne shows a bit of $hithousery too which others lack. Our team is just too soft.

Midfield were playing as individuals, and there was many many times when there was lack of movement and no options for the player in possession. Their no7 probably had his easiest game of the season, constantly left unmarked and not picked up for their goal.

The back three worked hard, as did Gus, can’t believe there is not a groove on the pitch marking Gus’s efforts.

I thought although Leon obviously has talent he seemed to be lost tactically at times, he was knackered before half time. This is not meant as a criticism for he has only just stepped up.

Overall, a win is a win, and winning ugly is necessary sometimes, pitch looked awful.

Rumours that their no10 wants sign for us.. didn’t look good enough to me!

UTB

Not a great game against an Aldershot squad de who came first a draw. They only started playing after going a goal down. Walker followed up his sitter against Halifax with an even worst miss tonight. First half was poor and we should have been ahead. Second half was better and the first goal was well worked between Morton, Ralph, Bridge I think and finished by Husin. We then seemed to struggle to get hold the game and Aldershot put us under some pressure not helped by giving away needless free kicks in dangerous areas. Golding missed a good chance and not sure why the goal was disallowed before we eventually stretched our league with again a decent move and standard Gus finish. Once again we seemed to step off the gas and allowed Aldershot back into the game allowing their lad too much space on the edge the box and he finished well. So in the end deserved 3 pts and a bit closer to the play offs. Makes losing home and way to a team like Maidenhead more frustrating although they beat Oldham tonight.

Squad is looking stronger and the first time I’ve looked at the bench and thought any of those players could be starting.

Positives tonight Leon , Hayes, Husin, Taylor, Ralph and Morton all did well although Morton a little off his normal standard. Husin would have been my MOM tonight. Another positive is winning when not playing well and we’ve done that a fair bit.

Subs seemed a bit odd, would have changed Kendall for Walker and KAF for Leon then Bonne for Hopper.

Onto Tamworth Saturday for another tough but winnable game

“Our team is too soft” Agree, at 1-0 up we were under the cosh and you look around for a leader to get us going and all I saw was players on their haunches hoping things will work out, which of they did. We need leaders. Utbs!

They dragged us down to their level, but we came away with the points so who cares. Big tests for our fragile confidence coming up away at Tamworth and Yeovil. Keep picking ip 3 points and we’ll start to believe
