SECOND-HALF goals from Noor Husin and Gus Scott-Morriss saw Southend United record a 2-1 win against Aldershot Town at Roots Hall tonight.
Husin fired the Shrimpers in front with his first goal of the season before Scott-Morriss netted from close range to put the hosts in control.
However, a deflected effort from Cameron Hargreaves got Aldershot back into the game and meant Blues had to survive a nervy ending to record all three points.
The match was delayed 15 minutes due to Aldershot’s late arrival but once underway Josh Walker saw an early effort tipped wide of the left post by Aldershot goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst before the Shrimpers striker registered a contender for miss of the season.
The opening goal of the game looked certain when Leon Parillon hooked the ball back into a dangerous area but Walker somehow volleyed his shot over the crossbar from inside the six yard box.
Moments later, Parillon – who was making his first start for the Shrimpers – saw a 25 yard shot parried out by Dewhurst before Walker appeared to waste another decent opening as he failed to make a clean connection from Jack Bridge’s left wing corner.
After surviving the scares, Aldershot hit back with Josh Barrett having a well-struck 20 yard shot pushed wide of the left post by Blues goalkeeper Nick Hayes.
After the break, the Shrimpers came close to scoring when a left wing corner from Jack Bridge bobbled across the face of goal.
But Blues were not to be denied for long and broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute, with Husin on target.
The attacking midfielder was picked out by an accurate left wing cross from Bridge and scored with a neatly taken right footed shot from just inside the penalty area.
Shortly after Husin’s first goal of the season, the Shrimpers came close to making it 2-0 when James Golding volleyed over following another right wing corner from James Morton.
Aldershot soon hit back with Kai Corbett having a long range shot smothered by Hayes before the visitors came within a whisker of drawing back level when Josh Barrett sent a low shot against the inside of the left post when an equaliser seemed certain.
The Shots immediately threatened again with Theo Widdrington having a long range shot parried away by Hayes before the Shrimpers keeper gathered a low effort from Jack Barham at the second attempt.
In a bid to stem Aldershot’s spell of pressure, Blues boss Kevin Maher made a double change in the 68th minute with Oli Coker and Tom Hopper entering the action in place of Parillon and Walker.
The changes made an immediate impression too as ,with 72 minutes on the clock, Southend doubled their lead with Scott-Morriss on target for the 13th time this season.
The goal again came following a move down the left hand side which saw Husin’s cross flicked on by Bonne which allowed a sliding Scott-Morriss to hit the back of the net from close range.
Southend soon made their third change of the evening, with Charley Kendall taking the place of Bonne up top.
But the visitors immediately got back into the game when a right wing corner was cleared only far as the edge of the penalty area where Hargreaves scored with a deflected shot from 20 yards.
Blues were angered that a free-kick was not awarded in the build up to the corner and boss Maher was yellow carded for his subsequent protests.
Maher soon opted to strengthen his defence with Ben Goodliffe coming on for Bridge but it was Aldershot pushing late on with substitute Maxwell Mullins heading wide of the left post from close range in the dying seconds.
