Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-0 Tamworth

This is a bit of a tricky game to summarise for me. We had a purple patch in the first half where we made Tamworth look like disinterested spectators, and as a result we took a 2-0 lead, but after that we resorted to being average, when we should have been ripping them a new one. Maybe if Macauley Bonne had buried that golden chance in the first half then a Southend goal avalanche would have followed. Nevertheless, 2-0 at H/T is certainly something I would have settled for before the game, and to be fair to Macauley, I thought he led the line well with some decent positioning and headers. What can I say about Bim? well, I think at times he had a little bit of Stanley about him with his no fear approach and the way he made their defenders struggle each time he challenged for the ball. Outcome - a Bim goal, nuff said, apart from signing the bloke permanently if it's on offer.

So, onto the second half. A lot of huff and puff from Tamworth, expertly mixed with well practiced sh1thousery. Now that mix is not something that allows Southend to flourish and therefore they didn't. Is that a bit harsh? probably, but we didn't rip them apart. That said, there was a exquisite swivel and shot from Macauley which deserved more that the keeper catching his shot. He also had me in stitches (not sure which half), when he was fouled, went down poleaxed and after the free kick was awarded, he sprung up like a spring, class mate!

So after all my waffle, where are we? Well, we're in 14th place and 4 points off of a playoff place which is pretty ok, especially with our walking wounded very nearly ready to join the campaign. Wasn't it great to see Cav prowling around?

So, on to Charlton and an opportunity to hit top gear for the entirety of the game. Do that and who knows where we will end up.

Said Wednesday that I felt we were turning a corner and today reinforced that. 3 wins and a draw in or last four and no goals conceded. When we go on runs under Kev these are the types of games we win. Dominant, defence tight and 1-0, 2-0 wins. In truth we never look like we will win 4 or 5-0 but if we can defend leads then that’s fine. Obvs Collin out with a slight niggle but Zak had a decent debut. Flapped at one cross but otherwise dealt with everything else flung into the box and kicking good. Harsh as it may be but I would start him next week. Felt sorry for Gubbins after the back 3 looking so solid but can see why Kev wanted to give Bridge a start but in truth he didn’t take it. Next week I’d have Gubbins back in and Ralph back out to LWB. Pleased for Bonne who had his best game for us and led the line like a proper number 9. Of course he should have scored although I feel Gus delayed the pass too long which didn’t help but overall Bonne did very well for the team and looked much fitter and sharper. Bim next to him is fast becoming a fans favourite and took his goal so well and showed great strength to set up Coker. For a young lad he shows good strength and deceptive speed. Also knows how to finish. Really hope we can get him to stay beyond this season. In midfield Husin had a better game but both Coker and Morton impressed with Morton my Mom. He is becoming hard to drop. For me the one slight disappointment was Bridge again. Just is lacking that spark and didn’t offer much. I’d start the same starting 11 next week as today but bring Gubbins in for Bridge. But overall an impressive run of firm and a free hit next week

Maybe controversial, but i dont see Crowther as our long term option in our back three. Too often, his lack of awareness proves costly. One long ball over the top leads to panic stations and shirt pulling to rescue the situation. He's often slow to react and simply doesn't smell danger.

Charlton next week will be a real test for him.

I'd love someone to explain to me what the Tamworth player was doing standing in the front of the goalie on every free-kick. Made no sense as if he stays where he is, he's offside. If he moves, what is the point?

With four of the next five games against teams ahead of us in the table, I think the November period will be really crucial to our season. 3 wins and a draw from those five, and we’ll be looking good and making up ground.

Coker back and looking good, Cav returning today, Waldron not far off. Things turning around.

Maybe one or two new faces around January time and we’ll be looking strong for the run in.
We need a Phil brown never lose in November moment

Walker and pepple must start against Charlton.
Great start to the game.
Another clean sheet.
I'm not overly glad our decent league form is going to be interrupted by the Cup shenanigans next week, would rather keep moving up the table.
Loving the return of the clean sheet mentality coupled with the obscene commitment which has been our trademark in recent seasons.
Bonne....I can't. Woeful miss from two yards. Yes some decent play today but I'd rather go with players who have actually put the round thing in the goal.

Is Zack available for selection? & Foran? Pebble & Moncur both played in previous round so will be available again.

Look at the body language from the Tamworth players - shame we didn't go up a gear and thrash them, feels like they were there for the taking
