Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-0 Tamworth

I quite enjoyed it today and thought the first 20 minutes was really good and when we scored the 2 goals early I anticipated us score at least two or three more but we seemed to go off the boil a little.
It was a good game but I didn’t think it was a great game but, it was good to see them playing as a team
Again - another solid performance from Taylor
Bonne had a better game but, I still don’t think he is our answer but let’s give him time
Walker and Pepple - they are really beginning to flourish and have to start next week.
Jeacock had a good game
So good to see Cav back! We have missed him
Oh my!!! some of Tamworth players were right bruisers and for such big lads they seemed to hit the deck very easily and conned the ref on a couple of occasions

On a final note while walking out I noted we do have some negative and fickle supporters who had nothing nice or positive to say about the players and the management team and were just moaning generally - If it’s so bad for them why attend?
Then again I suppose some people are just happy to be moaners
No ! Walker’s role must be as a substitute.I would have thought everyone watching today would realise that Pepple and Bonne make a near-perfect pairing at this level.

Next Saturday's opposition, being 2 divisions higher , might give us more of a better game as they play football not a bunch of cloggers.

We may raise our game.

He was obstructing his vision setting up the wall.
I don't get how that does anything though, they're professional players. I'm sure he can just shout over him. They've set up walls before. Mind you, they hit the wall every time it looked like, so didn't matter.

I think barring a couple of their players they looked the lardiest most unconditioned unfit team I've seen. Based on what I saw today they've done brilliantly to get two consecutive promotions. Proper thugs performance.
They have to find a way of winning with a tiny budget, and in reality the chances of playing sides off the park when £300 per week is a big wage is relatively slim. Staying up wil be a big achievement.

I am blown away by the number of positive comments about Jeacock's kicking.

We were the better team but the bar was very low today. All the players won their individual battles and seemed really up for it.

Today is possibly the first time since 22/23 season we had no teenagers on the bench. Great day.
He basically lumped it long with reasonable accuracy. Don’t know if that was in instruction (big change) or because at Lincoln they still go route one and he didn’t understand the proposed approach. Actually it worked well and we should let Collin do the same. Get it in their final third then compete.

We still played out from the back in general play.

Decent performance that. We won the game inside 20 minutes. Eased off after that but if Bonne could hit a barn door with a banjo it would have been 4-0.

Pepple man of the match. We need a mobile forward and he’s offering that giving us a real direct threat up front with his ability to roll his defender and run at goal. His goal came that way, his assist came that way, his goal in the Cup came that way. Am trying to think of the last player who offered such a threat. Stan did for sure, maybe Britt? Either way that’s pretty decent company to be in. Bonne had a wretched first half and if we’re comparing Bim to Stan, the comparison here is Drewe and that’s not someone you want to be mentioned in the same sentence as. But to his credit he didn’t go hiding second half when many would have and worked hard but he missed a sitter second half as well. He desperately needs a goal. Walker when he came on was a major upgrade over him and looks really lively. We just need to have him feeding off more than scraps.

Morton had a decent game again and can feel hard done by when Maher inevitably drops him for Cav but the player who makes us tick right now is Oli Coker. Everyone complains about slowing the game down but he’s someone who speeds up attacks with one touch passes like Michael Timlin did. He also tidies up things so well - we’ll be under pressure and he’ll take a touch and then a simple pass to someone better placed who isn’t under pressure. It doesn’t look fancy but is what can make a side tick. He offers goals as well. Good player and one of our own.

New keeper’s distribution was a bit iffy. Felt a lot less comfortable with him receiving back passes than with Collin. The one time he played it short he played someone into trouble whose only option was to play it back to him; another time he was nearly closed down before clearing. Most balls were launched long to nobody in particular and didn’t stick. Prefers to punch when Collin would catch as well. No idea of him as a shot stopper as his only save was from Crowther after the final whistle.

Defence played well and kept Tamworth at arms’ length throughout. Some said Tamworth weren’t any good but I thought we made them look poor. They beat Gateshead earlier this month.

Still think we’re vulnerable to balls over the top of Crowther but thankfully they didn’t really test him with those. Set piece defending has improved and work on the training ground is evident in matches.

Overall we continue to make progress.

It’s all about opinions. I thought Bonne had really decent game today. Having had no pre season, or a start to the season for that matter, he is to me showing what he can do. Many positive comments on here, and by both Kev and Paul Clark after the game.

So your comment “Bonne had a wretched first half ” I really, having sat there and watched his performance closely, don’t understand. As I say all opinions but to me he deserved his ovation when he came off.

That said is the rumour that he ran over your cat true?

How did the keeper play?
As has been said he wasn't tested very much but I didn't cover my eyes every time the ball was played back to him.

I was lead to believe Collin was trained to play out from the back but obviously our new GK hasn't had that induction as he was steady, confident and hoofed it (often quite accurately) and put us on the attack 🤷🏼‍♂️ seemed logical to me 👍

Funny how certain posters 'opinions' are conspicuous by absence from recent post match threads. They were all over the Maidenhead thread like a nasty rash!
Positivity is obviously an uncomfortable bedfellow.
There was quite naturally a lot of disappointment expressed by many post Maidenhead but many of those posters have been quick to acknowledge positive change as each subsequent game has passed, that is what happens when you are open minded without an agenda.

You often see keepers crouch down setting the wall in line with post or something, I guess it makes harder and/or distracting so more likely to make an error. Plus keepers often gesticulate to the wall to shift them over, again makes that harder. As you say wasn't successful.

But I do think it falls foul of unsporting behaviour law interested in @Mick view on that

Pepple's performance in the first half was as good as any from a Shrimpers striker since we have been in this division. Good control especially with his chest together with strength and pace. Should have a decent career. Good to see Oli Coker score again , if only our other central midfielders could do something similar for once. Nice to get four consecutive clean sheets.

Southend probably need to move quickly to get Pepple on a permanent basis before the price gets too high or Luton agree to sell him to another club...

Few points now I’m back from the pub.

- thought Morton was excellent
- Bonne so much better. Should have scored the one in the first half but overall much more encouraging performance.
- Pepple. Love the guy. Can we keep him?
- Jeacock. Nothing to do, first look with the pass is long. Did well enough with the long throw/ balls into the box.
- They were awful
- I’ve had too many pints to wake up without a hangover.

Another season first - when Bridge was subbed it was the first time this season we had XI on the pitch with no players who had played for the Academy.

In the first half apart from missing a sitter, the headers he won went to no-one, he misplaced passes and numerous moves broke down once they involved him. Things weren’t coming off for him. I said it to give context to his second half when he kept going and didn’t hide and played better.
