Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-0 Tamworth

Well Tamworth.. What a bunch of muggly thugs.
The 18 was a total bell end who's only interest was getting in Jeacocks face at every opportunity and generally kicking people about. Luckily I was right behind the goal and gave him an ear full more than once that he heard 😂

Thought the team played well against the thugs today, Pepple strong as an Ox and another belter of a goal. Does he score normal goals?
The back 5 were solid, the midfield were class, Jeacock handled himself well.

Lots of talk about Bonne over recent weeks but thought he had a good game today won his headers, strong in the air and on the floor. Getting fitter and sharper the more he plays. Just needs that goal to get him off the mark

Tamworth the new Boreham wood, nothing to offer but the dark arts. Hope we get a strong ref when we play the reverse fixture.

But today, we were much better.

Ball moved faster and we looked more confident.

Jeacock - looked assured in goal, dealt well with the majority of crosses. good kicks. - 6

Gus - always available and put their defence under pressure. nicked in a couple of times. - 6.5

Crowther - Coped OK, but as Paul Clark said, with a more aware ref could have given free kicks away in dangerous areas, but covered well. - 6

Taylor - very assured again, won some good challenges, cool in our own area. - 7

Ralph - Did really well in the air, won his battle with their forwards. Supported the midfield well. - 7

Bridge - Back in his familiar LWB role. Didn't really assert himself against the right side defence, but rarely lost the ball and made himself available - 6

Morton - Kept things moving well. spread the play well and strong in the tackle at times too. Set the pace of the game when we were in possession. Assist for Pepple's goal - 7

Husin - Effort was there and had a shot from the edge of the box, kept the ball moving, much improved passing today. - 6.5

Coker - Drove into the box, busy on the edge of it when we attacked. Got on the scoresheet and gave their defence enough to be wary of. - 7

Bonne - Much better effort put in. Won alot in the air and closed down well. Did miss a gaping net at the near post in the first half, golden opportunity to open his account. Had another effort in the second when the ball just wouldn't settle for him, spun well and put another effort down the throat of the keeper from the edge of the box. Also popped up in and around our box to defend. - 6.5

Pepple - My MoM. great finish for his goal, and nearly had another forcing the 'keeper into a save when Gus played him in. Showed great strength in providing the assist for Coker. Their defence knew he was a presence to beware of all the time he was on the pitch. - 8

Subs:

Walker - Had just under 30 mins and again worked their defence well, good effort put in linked well I thought with the midfield - 6

KAF - Came on for Coker. Pressured their defence well harried and put them under pressure. Busy as ever. 6

Miley - Nice to see him back not on long enough to score.

Gubbins - shored up the defence, again not enough time to earn a score.

Well Barnet beat that lot 7-0. Tamworth were not very good and really they were there for the taking after our two early goals.

It might have been different if they were given a penalty for Crowther’s poor challenge in the first couple of minutes.

Bim was quick and strong everything you want from a forward scoring the first and making the second a nice easy tap in for Oli Coker.

And then the entertainment virtually stopped.
Tamworth had a couple of quick forwards - I thought Crowther also struggled with their number 9. However there main ploy was the endless number of long throws right into our six yard area from Tom Tonks. I reckon that’s why Jeacock played instead of Collin - that extra height needed to punch and pat away those throws. He didn’t actually have a shot to save. He also kicked long virtually all the time.

So Jeacock didn’t have a shot to save and I think their keeper made one - from Bonne as the game drifted into pre season mode with 10 substitutions between 67 and 93 minute.
Who really thinks this is a good idea 5 subs each - it just kills the flow in the game. So a game we should have used to knock in a few goals we end with one up front. They could have stopped the match in 65 minute as there wasn’t any football between then and the end of the game. Who really wants to pay money to watch an endless stream of players walking off and on the pitch?

Of course it was nice to win - our first Saturday home win since we beat Aldershot on Feb 24 - 9 games ago, but really it wasn’t that great.

Bonne worked hard today and didn’t get any luck - perhaps if he Pepple and Walker ( for Bridge) started up front it might be more exciting!

Great first 20 mins when after grabbing the early goal we sensed blood.
A shame we didn't really reach those levels for the rest of the game, but after playing less than 72 hours earlier I guess there were some tired legs out there.
Nice to have some more options off the bench today, with Moncur and Waldron to hopefully add further competition from next weekend.

Tamworth were mainly a bunch of thugs who came to try and spoil the game and make it difficult for us to build up any tempo.

Jeacock 6
Gus 6
Bridge 6
Taylor 7
Crowther 6
Ralph 7
Husin 6
Coker 6
Morton 8
Bonne 7
Pepple 8

Thanks Cricko.

Under the circumstances It wasn't the best place to ask the question so apologies to everyone.

I didn't know the man but RIP Trevor Bashford.

Like the FA Cup tie at Eastleigh recently, this was all about the result rather than the performance, although the latter was good as well. Following three successive home defeats, each by a two-goal margin, it was crucial the confidence gained on the road in the last fortnight was reflected in three points at Roots Hall; those that remember the end of Paul Sturrock’s reign will know the influence home performances have as opposed to those away.

The team selection was brave; Andeng Ndi and Gubbins have been part of a strong defensive unit (three clean sheets in succession leading up to this game) and Walker grabbed the winner at Rochdale seven days ago. But Bridge offered more as an attacking wing-back, Bonne helped us to cope with Tamworth’s anticipated aerial bombardment, and - except for one jittery moment when he dropped a ball under the crossbar unchallenged in the first half - Jeacock was competent on debut,

A good start was vital; Pepple ran rings around their defence all afternoon and never was that epitomised more than in the two goals inside the first 16 minutes. His own came after excellent work tidying up by Coker on the edge of our own area before Morton (I think) set Pepple away and he outfoxed his marker before steering home confidently.

Pepple then showed his strength again on the left-hand side to create the chance for Coker, who did exactly what we needed as an attacking midfielder by getting into the penalty area to locate the bottom left-hand corner.

We were excellent in that opening 25 minutes and Coker, Husin and Pepple all tried their luck from the edge of the penalty area, drawing a couple of saves from Singh with Scott-Morriss also nodding off target.

As the first half continued, you could see why Tamworth have been effective in the opening few months of season, even if their tactics are something of a throwback (in some cases literally) to a bygone era. Our defence held firm, Jeacock has no saves of note to make, and Bonne skied a good chance at the near post.

That was the pattern of the second period as well. I felt we were quite naive in the amount of free-kicks we conceded; we didn’t need to get so tight to their players as they posed no threat from open play. They wanted the opportunity to hoist free-kicks, throws and corners into the penalty area, and we gave them a few too many of those chances to do so.

Despite that, you felt we were more likely to score a third. Bonne, who worked hard and won his share of flick-ons, had a superb chance to open his account, missing his kick with the first chance and then turning a second effort into the turf when the ball bounced up. But the positive is that he is now getting into the areas to convert those chances, he just needs one to go in now.

It was a positive that Miley was introduced late on, and the squad is looking stronger now. Maher has choices to make all over the pitch, and you feel the likes of Morton and Bonne, even Husin who was much-improved today, would be unlucky to lose their places if changes are made again next weekend.

But that competition for places is exactly what we want. Whether Jeacock’s shot-stopping, Crowther’s ball-playing and Bonne’s movement will be tested more when Yeovil arrive for our next league game will be something for the coaching staff to assess, but much better to be going into that game with 7 points from the last 9 and four points off the play-off places regardless of what happens against Charlton.
