Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-1 Woking

For where we are right now, I see that as a point gained rather than two lost.

Difficult to pick a MOM as no one really shone, but equally no one was particularly poor.

Dackers seems to be getting some praise, but (good) goal aside I found him a bit frustrating. Will be interesting to see how we fare without him.

12 league games in and 11 goals scored.................

Therein lies the problem. Great that we have tightened things up at the back, but we need to create more and convert more. Only 2 teams in the league have scored fewer goals than us. For me we are too risk adverse and not willing to give attacking subs more time.

I guess the thing that keeps me positive is we are creating chances. Hyde had a great chance in the first half with that header, although I think it took him by surprise reaching him. Second half there was a great ball played across to the centre of an empty net with nobody there to stick it in and their lad somehow got it back up and over the bar. On another day we take those good chances and walk away 3-1 winners.

I was impressed with Woking, totally over run us in midfield first half and if Colin hadn’t of made that superb save we would have been toast because at the moment we just don’t seem to have two goals in us let alone three but that will come.

Second half was much better but I felt that Woking for some reason didn’t start the second like they finished the first.

Two quality goals though but the ref was incredibly bad and I’m sure that Woking sub who was on the side line nearly all second half was actually acting as the 5th official lol.

The brawl at the end was funny though but overall I think a draw was a fare result.

Overall an enjoyable game but I think I would have bought Powell on at half time.

What’s the old saying “the form of defence is attack”

I said after Saturday's game we were at about 60% and managed to win that (against Yeovil's ten men). Last night I felt we were at about 40% of our ability and we came back to get perhaps a slightly fortuitous point against a very organised and confident Woking side after going behind. It's a match we'd've undoubtedly lost in the early part of last season.

We weren't at the races in the first half at all, and were indebted to an outstanding save at the end from Andeng Ndi to keep the scoreline manageable. Apart from the obvious (the match officials), I felt the blame for the goal should be apportioned to our midfield, who didn't seem to close down the goalscorer quickly enough.

It must have been a tactical plan, but we didn't pass out from the back at all in the first half. I felt we were too quick to go from back to front, all of Andeng Ndi's kicks went long and there were a few aimless passes forwards. Our best moments came when Bridge or Scott-Morriss got on the ball, and with Bridge especially the only way they could stop him was to foul him; both their right-sided players were cautioned in the first half and we needed to exploit that more.

Our only chances in the first half were a header over by Hyde and Husin's stoppage-time strike over, but we were quickly out of the traps in the second period and the crowd responded. The first 20-25 minutes of the second half we swarmed all over Woking, who tried to break things up with a couple of changes, but that had little effect; we got a lot of balls into the penalty area - there was a big shout for handball that was waved away and the ball just would drop until Dackers turned home (with the help of a little deflection, I thought) to equalise.

At that stage, we had all the momentum, so Woking were quite cute. Wilkinson went down with an injury, they regrouped, took the sting out of the match and that stopped us in our tracks. We couldn't recover the ascendancy from that point; you could argue we could've made the substitutions ten minutes earlier, but that's in the context of seeing what happened in those ten minutes to turn the tide. In the end we were hanging on a bit.

You can criticise their methods, but Woking's execution was very good; I didn't feel it was us sitting it back, it was the Cards getting back on the front foot and disrupting our rhythm. So, despite us not being anywhere near our best, it's another point and we're unbeaten in four matches going into the Dagenham match.

I don't think many players were close to what they can do; Miley was largely important in that early stage of the second half by being responsible to stay back, and when he made a mistake he got back to stop the cross coming in. However, I thought he was one of those culpable for the goal. Husin's levels have dropped a little from when he first returned to the side, and he might benefit from moving forwards if Taylor is fit to start alongside Miley.

I'm not going to spend too much time talking about Mooney as I've said it after the last couple of games, but he's not suited to the role he's playing and I'd prefer to see Fonguck in that position if we're going to persist with a 3-4-1-2 formation. There were a couple of lovely bits of skill with the ball at his feet, but it was too far from goal when he received the ball so deep and when he did pick the ball up in an advanced position he was too predictable.

Mooney could learn from Bridge, who is much more effective for the team when the opposition double up on him and I thought did well in the left wing-back role. Woking did target that side, especially in the first half, but he at least partially nullified Lofthouse's threat going forwards by occupying him in a defensive capacity. He worked hard going back as well. On the opposite side, Scott-Morriss slotted straight back in and showed a lot more energy than Demetriou, who was, nonetheless, unfortunate not to be in the matchday squad unless he was carrying a knock. GSM's throws are also an asset in his game.

Of the back three, Kensdale still looks the most susceptible to me. He's not comfortable in that left-sided centre-back role, and I'd be sorely tempted to bring Lomas in for Dagenham on Saturday. There was an argument for keeping him in place whilst we were keeping clean sheets, and I don't think he's playing badly, it's just an improvement that can be made to the side. Hobson made one uncharacteristic mistake and immediately atoned for it; Łopata didn't show any lingering ill-effects from Saturday and was solid.

Dackers took his goal well; Hyde headed over with his one real chance and was caught offside a couple of times in the second half, but was able to last longer than he's managed previously so his fitness seems to be improving. His off-the-ball work, as others have suggested, is very different to our other forwards (in that it doesn't really exist), but if we can create chances then I think he'll finish them.

Our biggest challenge is being able to do that consistently because we're not as free-flowing as we were a few weeks ago. To do I'd say we need some more ballast in midfield as Mooney in a free role is currently neither providing additional protection in that area nor getting the best from his talent.

I agree the lack of goals is a huge issue. Despite having a solid defence, it will mean we will miss out on the playoffs unless we can figure out how to change it.

Surprisingly, Maher seemed really upbeat about our performance after the game and said he was delighted with the performance (or words to that effect). I must say, listening to the game, it didn't come across that we were in the ascendency barring a 20 minute period at the beginning of the second half.

A point gained for me. We would have lost that game last season.
I'm feeling for Callum Powell right now. Five minutes at the end of the game is a bit of an insult bearing in mind Mooney had been struggling to impact the game.

'Timlin and Degan To do what?' - See what happens when I'm tired and don't explain myself properly @Jai? I'd like a player of their pedigree, not for any passing ability or goal scoring feats, but as a mid enforcer to remind visiting teams not to try and intimidate our creative players with some crunching tackles of our own.
I never really rated Deegan tbh, not dynamic enough. Timlin was one of a kind really, but Miley is the closest we have had to him since. I agree we probably do lack that nasty streak and teams like Woking will always try and bully us. I thought we at least tried to stand up to it in the second half.

Great second half performance. Really enjoyed the atmosphere in the West and the game overall. Two teams trying to win. Subs should have come sooner after the equaliser.

Ron Martin, you do not deserve that incredible support. Kev’s right in his post match, the link between fans and players is growing and the better it gets, the more a fortress the Hall will become.

UTB.

But it would be nice to have our own nasty git tucked in there at times, wouldn't it? Not that I'm advocating violence for violence's sake you understand.

Definitely. At this level, we'll come up against a lot of clubs like Woking/Boreham Wood, who are only interested in trying to cheat and bully. Shame as Woking were clearly a decent side and didn't need to resort to it, maybe they felt they were losing their grip on the game towards the end. I thought we actually stood up to it ok last night, last season we would have definitely lost.

Skill wise individually and defensively we are probably as good as anyone in this league. We just don't have enough players in the squad capable of scoring goals. We have played twelve games, how many goals have the midfield and defenders contributed to our tally?
That is by far our biggest problem.

You got that part wrong. Bridge played well. He ended up being marked by 2 or 3 Woking players but still managed to get balls into the box or lay the ball off to a player in space created because he was marked so tightly.
I just saw it differently. Not sure either of us have to be wrong or right! I just felt hes still struggling to play 90mins having not done it for ages. Thought this left him less quick when dropping his shoulder, and turning and going round players. I really like his skill doing that and he does make some great crosses, but I felt match fitness levels aren't there yet and as we both noticed, they were putting more than 1 against him . this was why Tom c was on the bench, in case he couldn't last the 90.
I agree with you by taking two out it left openings he could pass into. The criticism I'm aware of is he's great as an impact player but can't do 90. So it's important he's given 90 to get match fit so he can give us the benefits the benefits for whole game.
I do get your point though , he didn't lose the ball too much, layed it off well when he could, and certainly didn't have a bad game. I just like to see him turning players inside out like saturday .

Anyone else feel like the atmosphere in the 2nd half for brilliant? Thought the whole place got really behind the boys at 1 nil down when we could smell a goal was coming, really enjoyed it.

Shame we couldn't get all three points but a draw was probably fair overall against a decent side who came with a horrible game plan of upsetting us. I do feel they should of had a certain pen in the second half and somehow missed a sitter right at the beginning of the second half too, hence why I think a draw was fair.

I'm so bored of talking about officials but the standard is truly pathetic, for both teams as well. It seems the norm nowdays for the lino and ref to blankly look at each other for 5 seconds not having a clue what way to give a throw-in and then just have a guess. All basic stuff that shouldn't really upset you but really aggravating to see if happen so many times in just one game.

Really tough game against one of the best team's i've seen us play this season.

They pressed us high up the pitch, and really effectively. They doubled up on Bridge at all times and made it so difficult for him to create anything. They countered well and could have scored more in the first half.

Second half we started much better, mainly through Husin and Bridge on the left side. When we scored it felt like there was only one winner, but then the game evened out again and we ended up struggling to create anything.

Felt like maybe Powell/Fonguck could have come on earlier, since 5 mins isn't really enough to make much of an impact. But a point here isn't too bad considering how well the opposition played.

But it's the same old problem, we're very good defensively but we also don't really create many chances. Other than a Hyde header in the first half I can't really think of a single other good chance we created all game, albeit against one of the better defences in the league.

11 goals scored in 12 games is shocking. People seriously moaning about Collin when we have been excellent at the back. There is too much pressure on the forwards to get goals. Husin and Miley never look like scorring and our set pieces are routinely awful. Three big centre backs and none of them can get on the end of anything.
