Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-1 Woking

That really was unbelievably terrible refereeing. I know we seem to say it every game but that was a new low! Trotting around like a pony, unable to keep up with play and missed so many things I lost count. Managed to blatantly contrive corners for them until they scored and seemed in some kind of time warp when giving offside against us over and over (though I felt hyde isn't great at his timing).
Mooney wasn't at the races tonight nor bridge who was given another start, which meant jd stepped down from the bench to enable Clifford to provide cover for bridge.
I felt we were outmuscled and lacked the aggression they had until deckers connected cleanly and got us back level. Felt we lacked experience on the pitch and had none to bring on.
Would have liked wreh on early second half and fonguck to add some strength hunger and bite. it frustrated me we leave it so late to make changes. Just don't think players can often affect a game with only 10 mins, unless to protect a lead.
Great save from Collin but a few dithery moments with his kicking again.
Fans were very loud tonight which I hoped would lift the players more.
For me the ref ruined the game and was constantly having to explain his weird decisions. I'm sure he's safe and warm on their team bus now.
You got that part wrong. Bridge played well. He ended up being marked by 2 or 3 Woking players but still managed to get balls into the box or lay the ball off to a player in space created because he was marked so tightly.

I’m not sure what my favourite bit of his refereeing was. Might have been the free kick inside the D where he lined the wall up between the penalty spot and the edge of the area after taking a right angled turn to go around their wall when counting out 10 yards and then didn’t bother using his spray - despite using it later for a Woking free-kick from the touchline!

Not being able to tell the difference between Collin and a post standing 6 yards away was pretty special too.

A really good point that after a poor first half. Not being 7 pts behind Woking is really important, and keeps the run going. Not many teams will beat Woking and we still finding our way under Maher.

That said, I’m not as convinced as I was that it’s all going to click up top. Week in week out we flatter to deceive in the final third and my worry is we just aren’t good enough up top. I hope I’m wrong but that Mooney free kick said everything.. if I took 20 free kicks I don’t think any would be that bad and I’m 49 and work in an office. A real off day for him today.

The fight at the end was right in front of us. Can see a ban coming for the guy who decided to start lumping Wilkinson in the head. Why would you do that? Mindless

I’ve always remembered the ex-league poster who came on here when we got relegated and warned us of how **** the officials are at this level. I’ve remembered it because I feel like I’m reminded of it every week. It’s **** poor and not remotely good enough at this level. Something has to change.

Thought Lopata and Hobson were really good tonight, but Dackers was the man. A quality performance and barely put a foot wrong. Wants to prove he’s more than a target man and he did that tonight, but also did everything you’d want from a big target man at the same time. Hope we can keep him longer.

Clearly giving an advantage and then deciding after it was wasted to give a free kick?

Whilst provoked… Wilkinson got into the East stand to fight and only got a yellow

Trying to be controversial and that he was seeing things nobody else was…

Giving handball in the middle of the pitch for exactly the same offence which happened in the Woking penalty area

Looking like a poor man’s Graham Potter

The ref had forgotten his spray at half time and had to get one from the 4th official when the passage of play ended.

Scoring goals is still so difficult for us, and oh, for a Timlin or a Deegan in the middle of our team now. We are a passing team which works when we get behind teams but Woking were having none of our passing game and kicked Southend players at will. Three of theirs booked before half time.

Second half was better and roared on by the crowd we penned Woking in until, finally, Dackers took his chance with aplomb and the draw outcome was sealed.

Whoops, nearly forgot, the Ref and his linos achieved something that I though was impossible, they were worse than the trio at Eastleigh.
Harry Taylor might bring a bit of bite to midfield shortly.

Surprised no one has mentioned their goal ending from 2 very bad decisions. First they get a corner that wasn't, then from that they get a corner that was, then from that they get a throw in that clearly wasn't, from that they score. Sigh. Mooney needs a rest and should be replaced by Powell. He definitely needs to be taken off set pieces, as the majority are shocking. Hyde is what I said before, an inconsistent type. Dackers will be a big loss if he goes back to Salford. Hobson great again, even when he made a mistake, he made up for it. Made some good blocks and tackles as usual nowadays. Great save by Collin, but his kicking is unpredictable. They doubled up on Bridge, so much harder for him to have the same influence as the last game.

I thought Dackers took his goal really well but him and Hyde are the weak links in this side. For me Hyde doesn’t look interested until we get the ball and then comes alive during the final third. Even then he’s missing more than he’s scoring - he headed over our best chance tonight. I think Maher wants his forwards to press (I mean he signed Callum Powell which is pretty much all he offers but that’s also a trait of pretty much all his forward signings - Cardwell, Dackers, even the long forgotten Cosgrave).

I doubt this will be a popular opinion but for me Dackers tries but he’s not quick enough (neither pace or speed of thought), strong enough, good enough in the air or skilful enough. You need at least one of those, preferably two or more. His height at least occupies defences and he’s scored two very similar (and very well taken) goals but he’s not for my money the main forward on a promotion side. Hopefully Cardwell can be that and hopefully he can get fit. I’d also like to see more of Wreh. He’s raw but but can play the elaborate link-up and quick passes that this team has been built to play.

Did everything but still can’t win a header…

Don't know if you spotted it, but the numpty forgot his spray for the second half and the 4th had to go back in to get it. Such incompetence ....

A frustrating night yet happy with a point

Ref awful and just got so many decisions wrong one of which resulted in them scoring. Gave them throw ins and corners that weren’t yet missed ones that should have been for us.

We were poor first half and never really got going. Conceded a poor goal. Not sure if Colin should have done better. A good shot but didn’t go in the corner. But we seemed very laboured and other than a decent headed chance for Hyde and a good Husin volley we created little

Second half we were excellant and the crowd responded. We got a cracking equaliser but then seemed to sit off then again and allowed them back in the game. In the end a draw about right

Colin- just not sure and wonder whether Blonde should be given a chance

GSM- worked hard and got forward well and defended as he does and solid

Bridge- MOM for me and looked our most dangerous player

The back three, did little wrong and defended well against tough and pacey forwards

Husin and Miley- battled hard but really need to get on the ball more and try to create

Mooney- so frustrating. Clearly a very pacey and skilful player but things just aren’t happening for him at the moment. Feel he is one goal away from kick starting his season

Hyde- I thought he was the better of the front two. Well marshalled by the Woking CB but won headers and worked hard

Dackers- didn’t think he played well and again wins very little in the air for some so tall. But took his goal very well. Hearing he is off to Altrincham after the Daggers game

So we move on. I like our squad but still don’t think we’ve hit even third gear yet. Still more to come from this group but again tight at the back and now four games unbeaten. Just need to sort out the final third and no better place to do it than Daggers saturday. Not many tickets left so let’s get that away end rocking

Husin and Miley constantly win the ball in midfield. I’m not sure what you’re after unless it’s pointless fouls?

Colin …. Conceded 1 goal in 4 games, I think he’s doing just fine and only going to get better and better. Plus he’s OUR player. I feel confident with him between the sticks personally.

Andeng Ndi - 5 - Done okay, could have done better for the goal and his distribution is poor. Doing well considering he shouldn't actually be starting every week.

Scott-Morriss - 6 - Was okay going forwards, caught out a few times down the wing defensively but otherwise pretty solid.
Hobson - 6 - One scary moment where he sliced the ball backwards but otherwise quite composed and made one lovely slide tackle when we were in the final third.
Kensdale - 6 - Pretty solid without anything outstanding.
Lopata - 6 - Same as the other two really - solid enough performances.

Bridge - 7 - Our main attacking threat today, caused some problems for them and looked our only likely outlet.
Husin - 5 - Not one of his best games, relatively anonymous. Tended to be our main culprit for passing backwards instead of being positive and lucky not to be sent off as he pushed their player in the neck area.
Mooney - 4.5 - Very frustrating. As others have said, he's clearly skilful but I'm not seeing much end product. Failed to beat the first man on numerous occasions and that free kick was woeful!
Miley - 6 - Played well without being one of his best games, but he will consistently give you a solid performance, like tonight.

Dackers - 7 - Played well and caused them problems. A lovely finish on the turn, shows what can be achieved when we have a shot! Won quite a bit in the air, but so he should being 6 inches taller than most of their team!
Hyde - 5 - Felt like he lacked the effort we needed tonight. Should have caused them more problems, I felt like he shyed away from some balls and should have done better with his chance, by his own admission!

Subs:

Fonguck - 6 - Not sure he impacted the game much when he came on.
Powell - 6 - Likewise, limited time to do anything.

We played okay tonight without being particularly impressive. We're frustrating to watch at times - we spend far too much time in our own half and I felt we passed the ball backwards on too many occasions where an attacking move was better placed.

The referee was absolutely hopeless, and we would have found it hard to find someone in the stadium that could have done a worse job.

The trouble in the East Stand was caused by yet another one of his wrong decisions (this time the correct decision would have been to award Woking the extremely clear throw-in) - his inability then resulted in the events that followed. Had that simple decision been awarded correctly, the players would have been nowhere near the fans. Does that make it right for a fan to throw a punch at one of the players? Absolutely not. Nor does it give the player the right to throw one back. A stupid decision from both parties in the heat of the moment, I'm sure both of them now regret them - but again, the ref's incompetence has had more serious implications tonight than usual!
