Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-0 Oldham Athletic

Congratulations Shrimpers, you absolutely schooled us in the first half and although we improved a little in the second half we still didn’t look like ever troubling your keeper. The penalty miss was ridiculous but I’ve given up on being angry at the officiating in this horrible division, they are all incompetent.

Atmosphere was great and your players responded. It will be a tough ask to beat York or FGR away but I think you can do it with the momentum you have and what Maher has taken you through these last few seasons.

We might still scrape a playoff place but it’s pointless tbh as we’ll lose in the first game. I’ll be pleased if a proper club like Southend go up so wishing you all the best, might see you in a few years 😞

What a great game. Brilliant atmosphere under the lights. We made one of the best sides in the division look toothless. KAF, what a terrier he is. From V Block West, we got a great view of the build up play for the goal - sublime.

I heard Hobson getting some stick. That seems a shame - he always gave his best for us.

Was concerned when saw the team unchanged, knowing Ralph was fit. However, thought gubbins did ok for most of the first half. However, felt it was so noticeable that once Ralph was on that flank it became much more secure. He can be left 1 on 1 and will stop an attack whereas it seemed gubbins just hasn't got the speed of agility of ralph.
KAF is really improving and has huge energy. Very strong for his size and wins balls he has no right to win. Looked like he literally threw himself through the air to get the angle on his headed goal. Harassed the oppo into errors constantly.
Bonnes experience in every situation stands out a mile. He's very good at the dark arts and seems to enjoy deploying them. Great stamina and does so much for the team. Definitely doing what it takes to get another year.
I like Hopper, for similar reasons to Bonne. Not as sly with his dark arts but gets stuck in and takes no prisoners and is just what you want in our own box with 15 mins to go and a goal up. Never stopped chasing down their defenders.
Was really pleased for goodliffe. Had some grief from fans and was a rock today. Aggressive leader on the pitch and seemed to win every challenge.
Parillons change of pace is outrageous. Id had it described to me by someone playing against him and although it's been evident in previous games, on several occasions today he went from virtually stationary to leaving a player behind him in a flash. He seems to glide around effortlessly and is starting to affect and change games with his silky skills. He left Hobson looking foo!ish a couple of times today. Hoping his stamina can be increased with a proper preseason.
Wasn't sure about the KAF substitution because I didn't see the need for it, but can't hide the fact it played out well and it gave valuable game time to those on the bench.
Thought Taylor was loads better today. Stayed on his feet, not as defensive and made some great tackles.
I'd say Husin may have been our only 9 today with everyone else a 10.
thought the ref did ok over the whole of the match, although in hindsight it seems she missed two pens, which I missed too. She handled players well, took no nonsense and kept the game flowing.
I guess the big challenge will be maintaining the passion and motivation next saturday.
It was good to see golding at the game. I'm sure he'd have loved to be involved in a game like that in front of 8300. A game that wil! encourage crowds to come again.
I previously commented that I preferred TBV in the west, but today showed me I was wrong. The North looked the place to be. Heaving, loud, and that chant kept getting louder and better. Best I've seen or heard the TBV. Huge respect for the energy they put in.

I was actually thinking when Hobson went off that he’d escaped stick and that was a good thing .. so it saddens me there was some.
KAF is my new best player! Him and Leon were superb along with the front two I thought. Everyone gave 100% and we were immense today and made a decent team look very ordinary.

So much more vigour in the second half today to see it through and a clean sheet 👍. Keep that intensity up. Another vote for Bonne MOM here.

I HATED it!:Winking: Another eighty minutes of stress, of which the last twenty were the worst. I had no problems Tuesday night, once they had scored their quick double......I just had a feeling of stoic resignation. Of course we should have had a more comfortable cushion by half-time but that's not the way southend do it! KAF and LCP were superb and the rest put in a great shift. Happily the defensive frailties of Tuesday night weren't repeated........OK they hit the bar and didn't we clear one off the line?.........but did Hayes actually have a shot to save??? Great atmosphere, especially from the North Bank. The play-off dream is alive and kicking, which you can just about say the same for me!

Just want to post my personal thanks to KK for all he's done and sticking at it through all that's been thrown at him.

To turn a team that got walloped at lowly Boston into a well-drilled unit in the space of four days is remarkable, And all the subs were spot on and at the right time

Even if it doesn't get any better than where we are tonight, its a massive achievement with one and a half hands tied behind your back.

There's been a lot of flack on here - and everyone is entitled to their own view - but there may be others like me who feel we owe a debt of gratitude to KK and his team - so maybe it does justify a new thread

Oh -- and lets not forget- on Good Friday we have a visit from one Mr Duguid - lets get right behing Kev for that one !

Hobson wasn't subbed off for reference. Was 15 that was going off not 5, confused me briefly though
