Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-0 Oldham Athletic

I meant after the game. I remember thinking his appearance had passed without incident as I’d heard nothing. No boos or any comments. But seemingly there was from some people, not really sure why!
Every ex player gets it in the earhole if they turn up these days for another team.
Shaun turned into a really good player in the end, i sang his praises on SZ. But i'm not going to lie, i joined in with a bit of sledging against him. Unsettling the opposition, some have weak minds i'm sure. Just like players roll around, the game continues from the stands. My honest outlook.

Ah right sorry. When the Oldham subs were made, they did actually say Hobson but it wasn't him that went off.
Yeah I heard the North giving him the Southend reject treatment during the second half. Seems to be part and parcel of the game, mind games and all that

Yeah so every ex player is fair game .. ok, I get that I suppose. Just think some of these players should get a pass for the **** they had to put up with off the pitch for us. Cardwell abuse at FGR I also wasn’t on board with. But yeah at this point .. anything at all that gains us something in these games I guess. The crowd definitely spurred us on/unsettled Oldham.

I HATED it!:Winking: Another eighty minutes of stress, of which the last twenty were the worst. I had no problems Tuesday night, once they had scored their quick double......I just had a feeling of stoic resignation. Of course we should have had a more comfortable cushion by half-time but that's not the way southend do it! KAF and LCP were superb and the rest put in a great shift. Happily the defensive frailties of Tuesday night weren't repeated........OK they hit the bar and didn't we clear one off the line?.........but did Hayes actually have a shot to save??? Great atmosphere, especially from the North Bank. The play-off dream is alive and kicking, which you can just about say the same for me!
Yep, the same 😁 Had the third match on my weekly pass, and, like last week, spent most of the second half walking around the flat, while sneaking a look at the score every few minutes or so, (phew, still 1-0), madness!!!

What a great team performance, excellently managed, and, with so many negative waves when the line up was announced, really pleased for the defence and Nick Hayes for keeping a clean sheet at last.

The noise from all sections of the crowd came through loud and clear on the tv, terrific!

Are the play-offs still just a dream?

However, as I wrote on another thread, being a Shrimper is just not good for your health 😄

Couldn’t be prouder of the team and the club tonight.

Justin and the rest of COSU must be absolutely buzzing. This is vindication of their vision (and their investment) with a bumper crowd and a rocking North Bank witnessing yet another statement win following the wins v Halifax and Altrincham.

Add in draws at Forest Green and I suppose Tamworth and that win at Eastleigh and we’ve played 6 playoff chasing teams in the last and month and a bit and have won 3 and drawn 3 of them. We may have had a blip Tuesday at Boston but this team is on a charge who teams will be hoping to avoid the playoffs.

What is so impressive is how Maher has rebuilt the team on the fly. Just three of our starting line-up from opening day were in the starting line-up today - and one of those was Joe Gubbins who probably wasn’t first choice then or now. Hayes, Goodliffe, KAF, Parillon, Bonne and Hopper weren’t even at the club. They’ve all be integrated into the starting line-up and moulded into a team.

At the heart of the team is Tom Hopper. He’s lost a bit of pace but the work-rate is exceptional. He sets the tone and doesn’t allow the opposition defence to rest. They have to fight for every ball and he just doesn’t let them get easy clearances. Playing against him is playing in hard mode. I was sceptical of his signing but he is exactly what this team was missing. He won’t have the same goal threat as Cardwell had but he transforms this side. Alongside him Bonne looks rejuvenated. Had he been this fit in September we’d likely be talking about trying to get home advantage rather than just make the playoffs. I’d expect a close season story from Chris Phillips about how he’d fallen out of love with football but has now rekindled it.

KAF got a lot of plaudits today and whilst he buzzed all over the place, scored another header and was largely effective he was also the reason we didn’t win by more. Three times he got the ball in space with a man unmarked and three times he got his ball wrong. For now I’ll take the positive that he was getting in those positions but this is something to keep an eye on going forward where he may need a bit more composure and quality on his final ball. He has however earnt his place in the side.

The star of midfield though is Parillon. He’s the player people thought Moncur was. He glides past players like they aren’t there but has some end product as well. One of our big priorities in the summer is to find a plan B for when he gets snapped up. Mad to think he was playing part-time football just two months ago.

I thought Maher got all the subs right. Miley solidified midfield, Coker added some more energy, Ralph and Bridge‘s experience helped see us over the line. The only other change I may have made was up front where I think we could have done with some pace - where was Kendall?

We’ve now got a deeper squad and we made the most of it. It was also a good way to get players returning from injury up to speed, although I did worry we had too many of them on the pitch at the same time. A word too for Gubbins. I think he had another quietly impressive game. He might be our best crosser in the squad. That left peg of his is surprisingly cultured. We might need to give him some more support in front of him though.

So great to have Roots Hall rocking. Soak it in. We’re in the business end of the season and we’re performing in front some of our biggest crowds of the season.

After the performance at Boston and then hearing tonight that Golding was unfit and seeing that Goodliffe was in the side was concerned we would get the result we needed. But I shouldn't have worried thought that Goodliffe had a much better game.Yes we got lucky with the handball and if we had VAR in operation then we may have had to settle for a draw.We fully deserved the win and edged closer to the play off spot, will we get there who knows but if we play with the commitment and desire we stand a good chance. On to Sutton for the next Instalment

Don't agree on the subs I think Forson should of stayed on and Hopper subbed in place of Bonne
Think he got it right with the subs. Especially as Hopper and bonne both played the full match so couldn't have been subbed in place of the other as they were both on he pitch.

I thought thecsubs he dud name were bang on. Brought on Ralph for Gubbins to counter the pace of their 17 who came on at half time.

Fair play Kev

Manager pointed out KAF had run all night after 90 mins v Boston. Miley was excellent when he came on imo.
Bonne and Hopper both played the full 94 minutes ?
Yeah they did and Bonne being on the pitch was crucial in injury time. Him and Bridge showed an absolute masterclass in winding down the clock (and Winding up the Oldham players) in the South East corner

He has a thigh injury that the club are managing, which is why he wasn't picked today.

Credit where its due, got it right today, and was good to see him fired up at the end, he's obviously passionate about the club and i'd like to see more of that.

Just got home, slightly jaded following Bruvs birthday celebrations, but revelling in that great win/oerfirmance.
We were more than up for it from the start, the crowd were fantastic and Oldham were, quite frankly, disappointing (physical yet couldn’t keep the ball on the pitch). The only thing I would really give them credit for was their sensational away kit.
Can see why Forson got MOTM but for me Goodlife was outstanding, didn’t miss a thing,. 👏

First half Flaws Cost Us

The Mellon speaks;

"We spoke about the game and spoke about how we believed they (Southend) were going to react to getting beat during the week and what their situation was, and we just didn't heed the warning and just didn't come out of the traps quick enough," said the Scot.

"We spoke about it and spoke about it and there's enough experience in there to understand that's what we needed to happen.

"We gave away, from our point of view, a poor goal from a breakaway and we can be a bit more aggressive in dealing with the save the goalkeeper makes. But in the second half we showed much, much more. We tweaked the shape a little bit to get some more energy, more legs and more urgency if you like into the team and looked more like ourselves in the second half. But if you're going to give yourself a goal to chase, because of the way we contributed to the result in the first half, you're going to make it very difficult."

"You give them the opportunity to slow it down, which we would do to be fair, we would do the same.

"We were a lot better in the second half and played with a lot more urgency and the types of performances and urgency that's needed at this stage of the season."
