Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-3 Barnet

The worst thing for me is that game after game it’s the same old failings and we don’t try anything different..
A number of these players have been here for 3 years or more and the game is moving on and they are not improving - if anything they are on the way down and are never going to be good enough to win anything.

A lot of the players are not technically good enough to play the “proper” way Kev wants to play. They only run when they are passed to - movement off the ball into space is non existent and they are not quick.

We can moan about having a small squad but picking 11 from 19/20 is a luxury many managers would have loved in the past and it didn’t stop them winning things.

We’ve often lost the game well before any subs come into play.

We worked really hard before the first goal. So really disappointing to leave the back post empty for a set piece. A goal down and more huff and puff before Barnet really punish us. The 3rd is just inability to show strength. And as so many have pointed out the obvious today, we did nothing to unlock them.
With Miley and Coker out in the first half of the season we looked out at sea, now they are back in the side we look like treading water, good enough to be bobbing around but a long way from shore. Been saying the same for more than a season now, team needs an attacking central midfielder that supports the front one or two. And a nasty big bugger at the back. It's not been addressed and we lurch from 1wk to the next, win some lose some.
I asked myself before the game would i be "Maher out" after a spanking at home against Barnet, i concluded no. Our form had picked up yet i knew (and in fact posted on Thurs) we werent good enough for Barnet yet.
I wouldve loved to see us take a point off Barnet, but realistically we have no right to.
But can we go to Dagenham and turn them over along with Maidenhead whilst sticking it to Fylde at home? Thats where Kev's test will be, along with new faces in the building. Getting this team back up for wins, he'll earn his wage for sure. If not, i'll book him a taxi myself, like so many have said tonight, enough is enough and i think it is getting closer.

These refs, you'd think at least one of them would want to be a Roots Hall homer, are we really the NL version of Millwall?? They all hate us !
Fair play to those that clapped the team off and even those few in the North bank behind me that kept on singing at 3nil...we support Southend Utd not Manchester Utd so i respect dedication to the cause.
I didnt clap them off, was ruddy freezing and i hate getting battered.
No doubt more joyous days to come (rolls eyes face) but please Kev can we attack through the middle somehow?
See you all at the filthy Daggers.

Useless is the only word (apart from expletives) that can be used for that today.

Harness - 3 please don’t let this guy wear a Southend shirt again, kicking atrocious and I don’t think he actually made a save.

Taylor - 5 not his usual self

Golding - 4 tried to get us going from CB, lost his man twice for 2 goals his calm and collected on the ball but needs to mark his man better

Gubbins - 2 I don’t think he made a pass to a blue shirt the whole first half, then blamed everyone else

Ralph - 3 needs to play LCB his legs have gone for LWB

Miley - 3 poor attempt at a tackle I the first 10 mins yellow card took him out the game.

Husin - 3 poor today as he has been this season

Coker 5 - best of the 3 in there today but still not anywhere near what he is capable of

GSM - 2 he can’t defend, if he didn’t have Harry Taylor on his side to get him out of trouble most the time people wouldn’t be so obsessed with him, just because his scored a few goals this season people think his the most amazing player, he is bang average. Wind shouldn’t have been dropped

Walker - 4 he put in a fair bit of work today but he really isn’t going to create his own chances like Bim used too, and we don’t have the ability behind him to create chances for him.

Kendall - 4 same as Walker

Subs

Bridge - 2 the fall over the ball summed it up that’s all I’ll say on Bridge today

Morton - 3 uncharacteristically poor today, mind you probably fed up with watching Miley underperform thinking what he has to do.

Bonne - 3 did he actually touch the ball ?

KAF/Waldron - I left by that point

Ref - 0 **** ref that literally gave us nothing and allowed barnets awful tactics of holding everyone and throwing themselves on the floor at every opportunity let alone the foul throws from there RWB.

I was in two minds about going today as I knew what awaited me but what I experienced was far worse.

Think I'll go with my gut feeling against Fylde and stay away for fear of any flashbacks from that crap today

Both the manager and players, but mainly Kev for me. These players are very limited in ability, but capable of better than the absolute **** we are being dished up every week. They either aren't capable of playing how he wants, or they have lost trust in what he is asking them to do.
Either way, it is a recipe for utter medicrioty, which apparently 3 or 4k fans were happy to applaud off at the end of the game. Puzzling.
I've never seen Roots Hall so empty so fast. The W block appeared to tell the team to **** off when they went over. I think the numbers clapping them off was 100 at most, but I left as soon as I could after full time so I may be wrong.

Awful support, people leaving after 60 mins , booing players, singing negative songs about the team.

Yes the football was awful, tactics dire and we were totally outclassed, but thought the behaviour of some of our fan base was totally embarrassing today, the fickle nature of our fans, as is the way in football nowadays.

I am a fed up as everyone and can’t be bothered to give player ratings.

Serious investment in squad required and Mahers one directional set up and tactics have to change or he will need to go. It is no good just beating the relegation fodder in this league.

Also you have to question what is going on in training when we can’t defend corners!

We want our money back!
You don’t know what you’re doing!
Sideways and backwards everywhere we go!
We are ****!
Sort it out Maher!
Booing when substituting!

This came from the Blue voice today.

Loyal supporters leaving on 70 mins

Kev is losing support from the fans.

On my way out (early and something I never do) I said to a chap ‘blimey how bad was that, if someone was visiting Roots Hall for the first time they wouldn’t come back’. He replied ‘it was my first time, and I won’t be back!

Says it all!

It’s simple. We aren’t good enough. I can guarantee not one EFL club will show an interest a a single one of our players. In fact I doubt any top NL clubs will show an interest either.

We clearly aren’t willing to spend sour way to success so it’s the long haul of gradual improvement and good, clever activity in the transfer market- eventually because at the moment it’s just tumbleweed.

I don’t think there is any interest in this season re serious transfer activity so we hope to get a lot (and we need a lot) of transfer activity done for the summer.

Kev and COSU are joined at the hip here regarding the current situation. The jointly can get us out of it but for one or the other to wear blame alone would be absurd.

Im sure the keyboards are red hot…

He's got a long contract - they all have. As such they would be crazy to resign. If he wants them gone, Justin is going to have to pull the trigger and accept the financial cost. That's why 3 years - despite the fact they'd earned it - was silly.
Football must be the only profession where if you are not performing your not only sacked, but your contract is paid up in full or you agree a settlement amount.

from their forum;

Not to detract from our performance, we were excellent throughout, but I think that was probably the most gutless, lacklustre Southend performance I've seen us face. On the pitch they've seemingly gone backwards since Ron Martin left.

Ndlovu showing flashes of brilliance. Some Ndlovely superb flick ons and hold up play. He was wasted at the Wood.
Think that concludes everything

Full disclosure. I'm a season ticket holder and have been watching Southend for about 35 years.

Today is the first time ever I have chosen not to go to a game.

When Bim was recalled, I scoured the zone waiting.for some news on re-enforcements. I couldn't quite believe that we still haven't signed anyone as recently as last night.

When I awoke this morning, my wife was very excited. We've reached the age where we enjoy a nice coffee and she'd picked up some nice beans and suggested we take a flask to the game.

I surprised myself by saying I didn't want to go.

I've mentioned on here a lot lately about not expecting results. Of course we probably wouldn't beat high flying Barnet even with an addition or 2.

I just couldn't face watching us today. I listened on the radio and it sounded as dire as I feared.

I don't enjoy watching this style of football. I don't enjoy Maher on the touchline. I don't enjoy some decent players (Coker, Bridge, Cav) actually getting worse week on week. I don't enjoy seeing decline at a time we should be hopeful.

I don't enjoy our directors being out and and about, having pints with the fans while a professional football club with such a loyal fan base are declining week on week.

There's a lot of intelligent, wealthy people attached to our club now. A prospect unimaginable a couple of years back.

We've got the north bank back. Something about 30 lads wanted.

We got a striking off notice because someone didn't think it would be a problem not to submit some paperwork.

We've got a manager on a 3 year contract and no budget to improve the playing squad and presumably, no budget to sack him.

A fan engagement board and a qr code. A chief exec who had to be told toilets were broken and assumed they were fixed without checking.

The new chair of the trust won't have a bad word said against the management or COSU. The trust. The voice of the fans. Unless you disagree with them.

Since we were saved, this actually feels less and less like "my" team. My club.

I feel like I'm being patted on the head. Here Matt, we have 7 quid burgers. Oh but the seats are filthy. Here Matt, we've spent thousands on structural work in the north bank. Oh but we can't afford a midfielder. Oh Matt. We've spoken to Macron and we've got some really nice shirts now. Oh but you can't buy one as the stock isn't available.

The defence of poor management and mistakes by COSU are cult like.

Sorry for the rant. But today's result was completely predictable.

I'll score all the players a ten today. They were heroic.
