Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Yeovil Town

And if that 4th official ever officiated Joey Barton's team he would be getting a trip in an ambulance within five minutes.
If what's coming out of Roots Hall is right, he doesn't know the rules. And due to that, he instructed the ref to send Kev off.
Now I've long said Kev is a massive moaner to the 4th official, probably the worst in the League. I've been in the East Stand and seen him moan when he's clearly wrong. But on this occasion he's been done by a terrible 4th official.

Tend to agree.
The standard is poor, and I said it before Day 1 in this wretched league. I've had to cover other NL clubs before we got here, and it's not got any better.
I wonder if there is a ref report made to the squad beforehand?
Part of me hopes 'no', If there was - how thick are we not to react accordingly?
I suspect no, but think we should start doing this if we don’t. Regardless - we need to be able to adapt on the pitch.

Far from being despondent, after today’s match, I remain confident we’ll be in around the play-offs by the end of the season. Yeovil are there right now, and it took a hugely fortunate goal to give them a 1-0 win against us despite the fact we played with ten men for an hour.

In the first half-an-hour, I thought we were the more likely team to score. Far from the backwards and sideways play, it was the free-kicks we gave away deep in opposition territory that contributed to us having so little to show for the opening exchanges.

Yeovil were massively frustrating to watch (and in some ways I guess that’s a compliment as that’s what they wanted). There were plenty of little tugs and pulls both ways, but their defenders crumpled to the floor (often with a little look up to check the referee had noticed) and were awarded the free-kicks.

Our best moment was Pepple rolling his marker before curling inches wide of the right-hand post, and I thought he was immense this afternoon. At times he was like the pied piper with three or four defenders following him, even when we were down to ten men, but that often meant he drifted out wide, and then there was no-one in the penalty area to capitalise.

My main gripe with the opening 30 minutes that we went direct too quickly. Jeacock’s kicking has been lauded, but if we’re a possession-based team, I don’t want the goalkeeper smashing it long down the middle, especially if Bonne isn’t on the pitch to win a flick-on. Yeovil were comfortable in possession, so we were just giving them what they wanted. But they had nothing to show for it until the game’s big moment.

I have no qualms with the red card; I felt it was the correct decision. I’m not sure why there was such a clamour for Collin to be replaced - though I could understand why the decision was made - nor why Jeacock was applauded off by a sizeable number of supporters. We still haven’t really seen what he’s capable of as a shotstopper, but his decision-making was suspect with defenders in the vicinity and a bouncing ball aways making it more likely to be directed towards his hands outside the penalty area. That said, he’s inexperienced and he’ll learn from this, as painful as that is in terms of today’s result. Whether he gets another opportunity with us, we shall have to wait and see.

After being reduced to ten men, it was always going to be difficult against a side that were good in possession. That said, Pepple almost created something out of nowhere in the closing moments of the first half and went down; my initial thought from the South Upper was that it was a penalty; watching the replays I’m less certain, but I don’t think the goalkeeper gets the ball.

I don’t think Yeovil were hugely threatening, and even with their numerical advantage, Collin wasn’t over-worked. He made a smart save from a deflected shot early in the second half and a decent one from Nouble late on, but he was sent backpedaling by the goal, which was one of those that drop in once in 20 or 30 attempts. A little lower, Collin saves it, a little higher it sails out.

Yeovil would've been happy with a point, so they’ll be delighted with all three. They were set up to be hard to break down, and once they went ahead you always felt it would be tough to respond, but they were beatable, and I think we will beat more teams than we lose to now we have options within the squad.

I thought our back three did well, and Morton in front of them sprayed the ball around nicely. Husin and Coker weren’t at their best; sometimes you have to pay tribute to the way the opposition set up and they were nullified. It was a shame for Walker that he had to be sacrificed; Yeovil were susceptible (as most teams are) to attackers running at them, and if we could’ve adjusted tactically to draw them out, then the front two, plus Bridge and GSM, could’ve enjoyed greater success, but that wasn’t to be today.

Flat as a pancake from the kick off. Devoid of ideas and a season of mediocrity awaits us unfortunately. Not one shot on target today and from my angle I think Colin was probably at fault.

Not really sure how things are going to improve TBH. Players seem to be scared of making mistakes at home which probably explains why the away form is better.

Very frustrating day to say the least.

This stuff struggles to wash given the applause for Kirsty Dowle last season was covered by national press.

There is an element of sexists, racists, homophobes, drunks and "edgy" teens etc in every single fanbase which get louder and braver when they are losing and I'm assuming this fan was unlucky enough be sat near some of it. I will say though I'd not put much weight on that example you posted, fans far nicer to officials when we win 😉
