Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Yeovil Town

Regardless of the standard of refereeing, which to my mind was typical NL no more no less, and the stupid sending off, this was a poor performance with a complete lack of creativity in midfield and typical of this season. Pepple as usual ran his socks off with little support and poor service but there was little else to cheer. Subs as usual too late when fresh legs were needed earlier. Maher will be a marked man amongst referees until he learns to zip it.

A very good open, fluent game until the keeper madness. I immediately said to my Brother thats a red and she got that right, but what was Jeacock and our defence doing there? Up until that point I felt we would win it with some neat passing and interplay , but a defeat was then highly likely, going down to 10 in the first half is usually a disaster

I thought the ref did ok but not sure about the Kevs red and whether he can appeal it?

Fluke or not I felt Collin should have had that and t he took a bit of roasting from Crowther it seems

2 visits to the stands in short order is however unacceptable from Kevin, who needs to get his in the box act together

With not much time left Bonne comes on and immediately commits 2 stupid fouls, giving them the advantage and more time is wasted, if that is experience its brainless

Sure, but 10 vs 11 for 60 minutes will always give you a disingenuous outcome

Ref was lamentable. The red card to Jeacock was the only decision she got right all day. It wasn’t a penalty for the one Maher got sent off for but it wasn’t a corner either. The only thing I’d offer in the ref’s favour was that she was consistent. The slightest contact was awarded a free kick and it ruined the game. What was already a poor game was then made unwatchable by the red card as we then sat back to try and protect the draw and Yeovil had nothing to offer. Eventually a cross flew in but even after that they had nothing.

Maher will have nightmares about that one. His decision to drop Collin has cost us the game. He’s possibly also ruined his keeper’s confidence in doing so. Jeacock’s performance was everything people thought Collin’s was. His distribution was dire, his decision making fatal. It changed the game and turned us from strong favourites into a long shot. Bim looked to have the beating of their defence but once Walker was sacrificed for a keeper he’d beat a man or two but run into a third defender. Had he had a partner to draw away a man I think he’d have scored sooner or later.

It’s hard to read more into the match when it’s 10 v 11 and there wasn’t really any other action to report.

Disappointing performance all round. Couldn’t see us scoring all afternoon unless it was from a spot kick, and the once chance we had of that was waived away. I thought maybe she thought it was a dive, but no booking followed. From my view in the South upper (wrong side for the incident) was that the ball had gone when the contact was made.

When I saw the subs with 15/20 minutes to go (Bonne, Miley, and Wind) I thought we are shutting up shop as no goal threat there. Like others I am perplexed what Wood has to do to get on. Yes he might not have scored, but then neither did the others.!

Taylor my mom.

Very poor, even before going to 10! Not clinical enough, too many players with their backs to opposition goal, always laying it off with a backward pass!! I lost count on how many shots we had on target!!! 😂

It’s a typical Maher team!!

Sorry but why can't people say what they want to say? Isn't this a forum? If people want to slag the referee off because 1 she was bad and 2 because the women's game is totally different to the men's! I'd like to know what was said for Mahers booking and sending off. Probably something most people agree on but just won't say out loud.
Did the referee get away with a nice crowd? Would she have done this at Millwall, Leeds etc 🤔

I get the sending off, Kind of. Touched his hands outside box. But she allowed play to go on and only brought it back when they missed the chance. 2nd atrocious bit of reffing was when Gus got fouled and she had to ask who it was. 3rd was Pebble going through for me it's either a Goal Kick or a Penalty that's the only two options. She gave a corner How?
She lost the pitch She lost the managers
And the assistants were not assisting her

If the referee blows up instantly and gives the red card, she is correct.

I do not believe she was right to play advantage and still show the red. She was allowing Yeovil to freeroll us for a goal, or a red if they **** it up, which they did. The obvious goalscoring opportunity was not denied.

We had the exact same scenario with Taylor handball last week when Charlton missed two sitters, and that referee recognised the obvious goalscoring opportunity was allowed, not denied, and spared Taylor.

What makes today any different?

I also think the laws confirm that today's referee was wrong to still issue a red card, see highlighted below.

I didn't think the referee was as bad as some obviously do. Seen many poor officials in the National League and many teams are obviously able to game them. Regardless of the sending off I thought it had 0-0 written all over with both teams prioritising possession over any real attacking intent. Yeovil seemed content to play out from the back and then stop on the halfway line. Not very good from either team, we need to learn how to break down defensively minded and to take an occasional shot.

I'll let you decide if this is misogyny.

Women have a physical ability as do men and both have an understanding of it.
When a woman refs a womans game they know what that limit is.
When they ref a mens game, they see a lot more physicality than the women's game and so I think have to guess at where the boundary is between physical strength and being overly aggressive.

This happened numerous times today with Bim. He is a strong lad who outmuscled his marker time after time yet got blown up for a foul every time. Pure strength won him the ball on those occasions yet the ref saw it as being overly aggressive and blew up for a foul.
He plays like that every week, we scored twice against Tamworth where he used his strength to win the ball yet today that strength was continually seen as being overly aggressive.

I can't see any reason for men to ref women's football or women to ref men's football other than to tick the boxes of the woke snowflake society
I don’t think this post is misogynistic at all, but I do disagree and think you are over generalising. Just because this referee was quick to give a foul for a bit of aggression, I don’t think that’s the same for every female referee. I remember seeing some decent female referee performances for Southend games, Bromley away springs to mind.

I personally don’t see any issues in men referring women’s games and women referring men’s games at all.

For me it was a stone wall penalty, the ball was going out of a goal kick however Pepple just about got there to keep it in play, the keepers hand clipped Pepples ankle and he goes down. The ref awarded a corner because she thought the keeper got his palm to the ball and knocked it out

Where to start?

Mahers disciplinary record has to be looked at now. He's literally just come back from a ban so should probably use a bit of common sense when, having been booked, giving the officals the opportunity to book him again. I saw him get sent off at Boreham Wood under similar circumstances and as a leader, he should know better.

I don't know how you can maintain authority over the team when he is going to be banned again for losing his cool.

Ending up in the press box is amateur hour in my opinion.

I'm (not at all) shocked the Moncur thing isn't working. Never came back out to warm up second half and never got on the pitch even when chasing a game.

If Bonne scores 5 goals this season I'd be astounded. Doesn't look like he wants to be here and I genuinely don't see what he adds to the team (not sure that new goatee thing counts)

Some comments here and in the ground about the ref are laughable and show how backward thinking society still is.

From my vantage point, the ref got the big decisions right. It was handball, it wasn't a penalty and if Kev is being mouthy, it should be punished. I never see him animated in any other circumstance than when he disagrees with a decision.

To those saying women shouldn't ref mens games are doing yourselves no favours at all.

Today's ref was no worse than the majority at this level. We'd have all loved it if the decisions were for us instead and this "debate" wouldn't even happen.

Days like today make me sad. We're really not very good and seem certain to remain at this level, playing these teams and watching football played badly for a while yet.

It also shows that as a community, there's still a lot of closed minded people who set equality back a hundred years.

Not a day to be remembered fondly.
