Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Sittingbourne Town

Please define 'quite reasonable'.
As in good enough to get promotion? There are maybe five who might get us to the play-offs. As for the title, forget it. Check out the squads at Wrexham, Chesterfield, and Stockport when they won it.
What I intended to convey was that this group of players are better than they are currently showing, if our much heralded recruitment model is anywhere near as good as some proclaim and they should be doing better. The fact that they are so inconsistent is surely down to failings at coaching levels in not getting the best out of them. Either way it's down to management failure recruitment wise or in coaching.

Of course it wasnt just Bonne that caused that horrendous defeat. They defended very well en masse at
times., On another day with a little luck we could have had 4 when you look at the goalmouth scrambles and incidents

In the 95th Minute the ball comes down our right. The marking at that point was terrible. Another pass is made , virtually unmarked and the ball comes into our box. Never should have been allowed to happen

None of that Bonnes fault

However heres the kicker, he absolutely deserved a right shallacking and Knows it and no wonder he is crestfallen, for what he did was crass ! Paul Clark hinted at madness by not just hoofing the ball away and trying to nutmeg and opponent in his own goalmouth at that stage of the game

If you pause it and slow the action down ( keep doing it ) when the ball arrives at Bonnes feet there's not a Sittingbourne player within 5 or 6 metres of him in any direction

He then looks to his right bizarrely as if weighing things up and seemingly looking for an opponent to kind of take on coming towards him. When the player arrives he tries to play around him , be clever , a nutmeg or whatever

Completely daft ! Goodliffe was absolutely correct to let off steam on that ive been in that position , not quite as poor as Bonnes effort, but taken a few Bollukings from our "vibrant " Goalkeeper ., whom we all loved incidentally

I didnt mind the emotional outburst, I knew when I had , lets put it politely, " made a very misfortunate error of judgement " or was "tarting" around, scuse the phrase

That cost us the match at that point clearly

On seeing it back, I don't blame bonne as much as I did at first. Was a complete freak of a goal, and I'm sure any other time he would of just cleared it straight away, the whole team are too blame, not one man. We was all singing his name and lauding him at dagenham last week, so don't get on his back anymore than is needed. I saw a few articles on him from a few years back, and seems like a lovely guy who has had it quite tough
He might have cleared first time up field if we had left someone up there but not for the first time we didn't. A row Z clearance, long throw incoming, punt up field straight back in to our box, made a decision to try and play out and retain the possession.

...or circumstances when it comes to recruiting.
We've been playing catch-up since the embargo screwed us in the summer. Not to mention a consortium determined to avoid the same route as the shyster who got us into this mess in the first place.
The fact they are so inconsistent is a consistent of players at this level.

I imagine Kev, Currie and Benno lock horns every day wondering how to get good out of average.

And neither should you. Anything like that should stay in the dressing room. Publicly belittling professional players destroys confidence and decimates team morale.
Very hypocritical imo. Reading the messages on here week in week out is exactly the same as the thing's you're saying ruins team moral and destrys confidence so how do we expect them perform 🤷‍♂️

A good quote that I heard from a professional consulting company who when they are asked to review under performing companies invariably state that “The fish rots from the head down”.

Seems appropriate for us unfortunately.

if Maher has the final say on whether or not he wants the likes of Bonne, Kendall, Moncur, Gubbins etc then the responsibility lies with him if they fail to make it. Or are you saying these players were forced on him and he has had to accept them with the results we have all seen?

It’s the old classic, do they need an arm round them, or a rocket up them? Different players will respond to different treatments of course - read any of Sir Alex Ferguson’s books and it’s clear that part of his success as a man manager was adapting his style to suit the individual.
I have to say I have no issue with players calling each other out on the field occasionally and when it’s appropriate - it’s when they’re screaming at each other for 90 minutes that you know you’ve got a problem in the dressing room.
I completely agree with your first paragraph. But in this case I really don't think that screaming at Bonne like that was right. He obviously knew he'd messed up, his reaction both immediately after the goal and at the end showed that. Being screamed at didn't change anything.

Might be a reminder for next time in your own the box though? dont turn and try to play across your own goalmouth

I'm saying there was slim pickings bearing in mind the embargo and budget.
I'm saying none of the above would have been first picks in an even-handed world.
I'm saying he had to make up the numbers somehow, and you fail to mention the Pepple loan which was an undoubted success.
I don't want to sound a KM apologist, but he had to punt on someone.
Might you concede the side were up for it against Daggers before illness yesterday also played a part?

Also just want to mention Harness, I’ve never known a keeper that can’t kick a ball.! His distribution is the worst I’ve ever seen. How he made it as a keeper is beyond me.

Probably his outstanding saves from shots, couple i saw at Daggers. I'll take that over a few kicks that go out of play. Mind you at this level i'd hope for better kicking than that.

I never ever post and have been a supporter for 55 years or so and a season ticket holder but I am feeling so angry, crestfallen and frustrated today that I just had to convey my feelings on that performance yesterday.

From the very outset you could see that Sittingbourne were playing for penalties but did we recognise that fact and attack them with pace as you would expect against a side three divisions lower? No we decided to play crab ball across the back, take all pace out of the game and generally stroll around the pitch assuming that our very presence was enough to beat these part timer’s.

Harry Taylor is a fantastic defender but yesterday he turned into our very own John Stones being the master of the sideways and backwards pass I genuinely felt embarrassed watching. There were so many opportunities for him (and the other defenders) to charge into space in front of them and get us up the pitch but our lack of ambition was there for all to see. After all this was only Sittingbourne and we only had to turn up to win surely?

I’ve read the post from others saying that Kev was not looking to play this way but surely if the players are ignoring his instructions then they should be taken off and made an example of?

The whole performance smacks of a typical Maher slow, tedious, boring tactical affair for which he wishes to remain completely blameless.

Our corners and set pieces are dreadful and appear to be without plan, thought or guile and bother no one whilst every corner or set piece by the opposition appears to offer extreme danger. This incredibly stupid idea of having 11 men back for corners is just naive and totally tactically inept. If we had left two strikers up the pitch (on different sides of the pitch) for their late corners yesterday we would have possibly have someone to pass the ball to from a clearance but also I would suspect they would have left two players on each meaning we would have outnumbered them in the box. Alas our tactics remain rigid, without foundation and reflect Kevs general stubbornness.

COSU are trying to get the club sustainable and I feel sure that monies from progression in this tournament would have been most welcome but once again Kevs lack of motivational skills and tactical nous have put paid to this.

I fear for the future of the club with performances like this as the crowds will simply vote with their feet and revenue will reduce accordingly. Who wants to travel and pay to watch professional footballers pass the ball from one side of the pitch and back?

On a personal note I felt the defeat more than most as I live in Sittingbourne and travelled down with a huge party of their supporters. They like me could not believe what they had just seen and this performance (or lack of) will live with me for a long time!

Sorry Kev……time for change either tactically or managerially!

Extremely disgruntled from Sittingbourne.

Agreed. Nothing wrong with a bit of passion/controlled aggression.

We're far too soft and it shows, shock horror a football player is righly ****ed off when his teammate makes an atrocious mistake rather than clear it. Won't do it again will he?

He clearly is not a good replacement for Collin and this position needs sorting asap

You obviously weren’t at Barnet. One of the worst goalkeeping displays I’ve seen.
