Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Sittingbourne Town

One of Chris Phillips specials where he openly tells it as it is and puts his finger right on the pilse
He hasn't though has he. No criticism of tactics etc, or "I know, we're struggling to score, so let's take off a forward and put a midfielder on - that'll help!"

Firstly, well done to Sittingbourne. It was a fantastic achievement for them and a huge moment in their history. We just unfortunately had to be part of it.

I know the instinct is to go for the manager and I get that, however, the team selected on Saturday should have been more than enough to beat them. We played the same system that created so many chances against Fylde and Dagenham. We started with 3 strikers and played two midfielders that like to play forwards. That is more than enough to get the win. It wasn't the formation but the application of the team. We didn't press like we had been an were so static.

I've said this so many times, but Kensdale and now Golding, are so integral to our attacking play. We selected Goodliffe who doesn't bring the ball out. Therefore, one of Taylor or Gubbins had to do that, and they didn't. If we are playing with a 3 against a side who sit in, one of those has to join attacks. Gubbins looked so scared to do that. I don't know if we will see him play much again.

Kendall had an awful game. His touch was absolutely horrendous. I do fear that he will be a player that seems like he can't be dropped because of his work rate but in actuality, he has little attacking output.

Bonne will be criticised, but I actually thought Walker and Kendall looked lost without him. Of course, he made a mistake, but why have we let it get to the 95 minute where we need our striker to kick it into row z?! That situation should never have happend as we should have been in a comfortable position by that point. He can be blamed for the mistake but he can't be blamed for the dire performance of the team before that moment.

It was an unbelievably weird performance when you consider the form we have been in but all they can do is react on Saturday. I'm hugely disappointed and I'm still really feeling it today to be honest. They have to react against Maidenhead. If we do that, fans will start thinking about the league again.

He would probably be embargoed by Maher if he actually challenged some of the tactics or raised other important issues.

Unforgivable by Bonne, cocky and thought he could outskill the opposition and clear it. The fact that the goal came from a set piece not dealt with properly has been our weakness all season. If we only sign 2 players in the summer, one needs to be a real organiser at the back and leader, and the other someone who can take a decent set piece.

Maher will probably drop him from the squad and revert back to 5-3-2, with Waldron and Kendall/Walker on the bench
Dread to think what his plan will be this week….goalkeeping coach between the sticks, Cav Miley, playing on sticks, Husin back in going backwards, Gubbins cutting up the oranges, anything is now possible with this incompetent so called head coach?

That was a frustrating watch. I was quite impressed with Goodliffe to be honest, he seems like a commanding character, and obviously passionate at the end with Bonne there, whether that was the right or wrong thing to do.

I do feel a bit for Bonne. Yeah... he ****ed up, but you could see he bloody knew it, and as others have said we shouldn't have let it come to being so close at the end.

KAF was alright, but the rest were poor. Was expecting more from Morton & Coker. Seen them praised a lot recently, but I just didn't see it on Saturday.

Need to get into the playoffs now to make this a distant memory. Just need to continue that league form and we could be alright.

Ive taken a while to compost thoughts as if Id commented saturday or yesterday I probably wouldnt have anything welcome to say

I am f***ing disgusted

A three division difference is only a problem if you play like that and sleepwalk into the kinnd of disaster we saw at the end

I see Bonne is the scapegoat again for a freak moment even if silly on his part

A real chance to win that cup and a day at Wembley, it opened up for us

Maher is a perenile loser but the excuses dont wash anymore certainly not against oppo like that

Lets act like a big club with ambition and make the decision. Heavy heart but has to be done if we want to move forward

Can they not read or hear the reaction they get from the same people voicing on here abd who watch them then berate them thus knocking their confidence more? Very public to me.
That's expected. The fans pay their money and can say what they like at the games. If they have any sense they won't read the message boards (I believe they are told not to). Anyway, the fans don't pick the team.

But for the manager to come out and publicly throw individual players under the bus, that's totally different and an absolute no-no. Be critical of the team and the overall performance by all means (which is what I hear, I honestly don't know what a lot of people on here expect him to say after a defeat) but there is no way a manager should be publicly hyper critical of an individual player's performance. All that sort of stuff should be kept behind closed doors.

Shots on target… 3 - that’s one for every league higher than them we were :Smile2:
To be fair, I don't know where they get the stats from... in the write up they describe 8 shots on goal and that's not counting the ones not referred to (although there weren't many).

As it happens it did. We looked even better when Waldron and Bonne replaced Walker and Hopper. At the end of the day we had enough chances to have won several games. 3-4-3 should only be used when all else has failed. I hope that the lad from Slough lives up to what is expected. Then you have the forward thinking midfield player we need and add Coker to that. Morton or Miley to play just in front of the central defenders, 2 wing backs , plus 2 mobile forwards. Problem solved. If only it was that easy !!

Exactly.

People say Maher has no Plan B, but he often changes tactics and even formation mid-game. You can't just throw on strikers and hope - he tried to actively change something, but it sadly didn't work.

It's Tuesday. The dust has settled now. Our captain has spoken to the Echo and said that, as always, lessons will be learnt. He said that the team had to analyse what went wrong. Put simply Nathan we didn't score and we allowed them to do so.

What was Bonne doing? Difficult to say but it looked to me like he was trying to be calm in a high pressure situation, thought momentarily about passing the ball sideways and then changed his mind so started to aim a punt upfield when the boot of the onrushing Sittingbourne player arrived and the ball spun off into the far corner of the net. Bonne then went down as if he had been shot, wailing about his error and bad luck. He then got an earful from his team mate which must have helped....

As I said, the dust has settled and I feel a bit annoyed with myself that part of me is pleased for little Sittingbourne and their 800 fans - I'm a lifelong Shrimper for Pete's sake what am I doing? BUT... what a great day for them. Lady Luck was on their side and I hope she is still with them when they play Aldershot in the next round.

We played the same system yes siree, but with the old mentality like some weird hybrid animal that has no functional use , ie scoring goals and beating the opposition, all heil the double bus low block and the just one more slow square pass will do it all football a recipe for 0-0 usually, or a breakaway setpiece goal for the opposition. Yes let's see how they react in the next few games , do the players believe in their coaches methods and in each other as professional footballers for that matter.

Almost as if our "on paper" formation isn't as important as some on here would have you believe.

Exactly. Against Dagenham and Fylde our back three were Taylor, Golding and Ralph. Golding has the confidence and ability to make forward runs when there's space in front of him. Ralph has even been known to make the odd foray into the opposition penalty area playing in that position. Against Sittingbourne we had Taylor, Goodliffe and Gubbins, all of whom seemed wary of getting a nosebleed if they crossed the halfway line. Same formation, different players, different outcome.
