Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Sittingbourne Town

I don’t know where the blame lays for yesterday’s defeat against Sittingbourne.
But come on Kev they are your players, surely they all can’t be that bad. Tactically I do think the team are set up not to loose, but when playing a team many leagues below us at home . You need to take a look at yourself Kev this isn’t good enough.
But, but, but....he didn't get the players he wanted, he had to make do with leftovers blah, blah, blah.

No team ever gets all its first choices and we won't in the summer either, even without an embargo.

Also, out of that starting 11, which ones were not who Maher wanted, because I'm pretty sure they were all his players.

Tough to take - Southend United lost to Sittingbourne at Roots Hall (Image: Lucy Copsey)

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher threw doubt on the future of some of his players following the Shrimpers’ embarrassing FA Trophy exit.

Blues were beaten 1-0 by Isthmian League South East Division side Sittingbourne in the fifth round tie at Roots Hall this afternoon.

And Maher was clearly hurting at the final whistle.

“It's so disappointing because the opportunity was there,” said the Shrimpers head coach.

"We'll look at one or two and see if they're going to come on the journey with us because we've got to be able to trust them when they go on the pitch.

"We've made changes but we should be strong enough to win that game.

"In the end we weren't.

"It was Sittingbourne's day, we wish them well and say congratulations to them."

The Shrimpers enjoyed long spells of possession against the Kent club.

And Maher should have made more of being territorially on top.

"We've had enough balls go in the box and enough chances in terms of headers and things like that without really working the keeper as well as we should have done,” said Maher.

"We've asked enough questions and we've put the ball into enough areas but we haven't made one of them count.

"We had chances in the first half and in the second half and towards the end their keeper has made a couple of great saves but you've still got to take chances.

"But you've got to put teams to bed and while it's 0-0 there’s always that danger something can happen.”

Sittingbourne bagged the only goal of the game seven minutes into stoppage time when substitute Anthony Church blocked an attempted clearance from Macauley Bonne.

And Maher found the setback tough to take it.

"Nathan (Harness) didn't have a save to make the whole game but you can see the threat was with a long throw or a set piece,” said Maher.

"We dealt with the first phase of it but Macca hasn't cleared it.

"It's almost a tackle which goes in "It's a difficult one to describe to be honest until I see it back properly."

“We thought it was a good opportunity in the FA Trophy this season to progress as far as we can and we know what's at the end of it."

But Maher stressed he picked a strong enough side to have made it through to the quarter-finals.

"We picked a team we felt should have won the game and there were enough players with enough know how, experience and quality to go and win it,” said Maher.

“We've got to watch this back now and we'll come in on Monday and go through it again.”

Injured - Southend United wing-back Gus Scott-Morriss (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United wing-back Gus Scott-Morriss suffered a nasty looking defeat during the Shrimpers' 1-0 defeat to Sittingbourne.

Scott-Morriss was injured when defending a corner late on.

But Blues boss Kevin Maher has yet to discover the seriousness of the setback.

"I don't know anything about it at this stage," said Maher.

"I haven't had the chance to speak with the medical team so we'll wait and see on that."

Scott-Morriss - who is the Shrimpers' joint top scorer with 11 goals this season - was replaced by George Wind for the final six minutes of the FA Trophy tie.

The thing that worries me is that Kev doesn’t even look angry or over bothered 😡
Looks to me like he's stunned into an exasperated calmness after spending 97 minutes screaming at his team. He's clearly thinking of moving on a couple of players as a result of their performance today. I'd like to be a fly on the wall tomorrow when they all have to sit and watch the video back...

"WTF were you thinking then?"

"Why didn't you do what I shouted to you?"

"Why the **** did you pass the ball backwards then? Can't you see the chance you've let go begging...."

"You didn't take those part-timers seriously did you? Thought you had a divine right to sweep them aside!"

Steventon and Smith were the two best players on that pitch, far better than any of ours on the day. You can see why Sittingbourne are unbeaten in 28 games.

Delighted - Sittingbourne boss Ryan Maxwell (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SITTINGBOURNE boss Ryan Maxwell thought his side restricted Southend United to half chances at Roots Hall.

An injury time effort from Anthony Church saw Sittingbourne secure a shock 1-0 win against the Shrimpers.

And Maxwell was pleased the Kent club were able to keep out their hosts.

"Southend had half chances but nothing really clear cut," said Maxwell.

"They didn’t have one v ones or anything like that.

"We stood up, we ran with people, we blocked and dealt well with corners and crosses.

"Our discipline was a huge part of the result today."

The victory made it 28 games without defeat for Sittingbourne.

And the latest good result left Maxwell close to tears.

“I’m not a crier but if any time I was going to have a tear in my eye it would’ve been then,” said Maxwell.

“Just the emotion of knowing that was it, knowing we had scored here and that the plan had come off to a tee.

“It was euphoric and emotional, especially in front of the fans.

“ Immediately I thought what a day for these people.

“We’re into the quarter final of a national competition and we’re step four.

“We’ve had to come to Southend and win to get there and it’s phenomenal.”

Just saying that King Kev will use yesterday’s debacle to shoe horn back in his absolute favourite two negative midfielders. KAF was loved at Daggers but as usual as soon as anyone comes here they get ruined…..he really is the worst, inconsistent, boring manager around but we’ve got to put up with the crowd reducer for a year longer than anyone else because he’s a so called Southend legend….most jobs you’d get the elbow being this ineffective
Maybe daggers will take him back then and we won’t have to pay the last 18 months of his wages.

Rather they took the inept manager off our hands. Kendall, KAF, Moncur, Bonne, all came with good reputations…..and then they met Kevs methods!

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch the match and had to put up with the commentary. Based on what I heard we again lacked being clinical . Just like Tuesday. If we gave to rely on our strikers to deliver based on the delivery's that they get. This won't be the last time I'll be commenting about it this season.
Hahahaha! May I say a huge thank you to DAZN for not live streaming that! Quite honestly the commentary was painfully enough listening. Won't be seeking out the 'highlights' but may risk Pip's podcast to share the hurt.
