Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-0 Woking

We pumped the ball forward much more than i expected and didnt find Waldron once. Poor bloke must be wondering if he will ever get played in with a ball to his feet.

I actually thought the game was hectic rather than slow and ponderous, so didnt find it that boring, although admit the lack of barely a shot was pretty frustrating. Certainly for me I dont think we lacked effort. Both sides worked hard at the press at times, and whilst many mistakes, both defended quite well

Husin played quite well but equally manages a spate of very poor passes. Wes made some strong runs and didnt play that bad . We tend to like jumping on Wes, although he got a good pat from Kev on departure . Crowther had his first bad one and Miley kept up recent form

The biggest surprise for me was to see poor old Jack Wood finally get some better time only to be thrown on as a striker. When I thought a great opportunity existed to bring on Dackers for Waldron and at last play Jack behind the front two !

Will he ever get the chance there or continue to be played on the right wing or as a striker?

Well we're nowhere near Wrexham or Chesterfield yet mainly due to our forward play which is very laboured and predictable with Bridge .We also seem to set up very negative at home.Have the last few games been more about securing our league position than trying for that outside chance of the play offs ? . Again a big let down for a decent crowd which is a great opportunity missed .

We're nowhere near Wrexham or Chesterfield because we're not breaking the bank on League 1 top goalscorers. Instead, we have loaned in 2 terrible strikers because they were with us before, even though in those stints they weren't great either. The sooner Dackers & Sandat are gone, the better.

We have also just given a load of players quite lengthy contract extensions to say, 'Cheers for putting up with a **** chairman'. So it will be a few seasons until we have a squad decent enough to be at Wrexham/Chesterfield/Notts County level of success in this league. This squad may challenge for play offs, it depends if Maher can create a tactical plan that isn't 'Pass to Bridge'...

Took three and a half hours for a 2 hour car journey. A127 was horrible. Then watched that. It was like watching Sunday League. Literally nobody played well. Maybe Collin. Really very very poor.

Nothing has changed.
Our defence is very good. Our unbeaten run is built on not conceding.
Our goal threat is a million miles from where it needs to be and the whiteboard in the summer will need to be full of attacking & creative midfielders and strikers (the latter opportunity because 2 currently are loans). The former is a bit awkward given we have a number already on new contracts who couldn’t hit a barn door with a banjo…
I think there were two (straightforward) saves made in the entire 90 minutes

ZERO service today.
In fact ZERO service for weeks now.
Totally agree. And I know I may be biased as he's a good mate, but I do feel we do need a Zak Brunt type player to open up teams that set up to block us out. Too many 0-0s lately, and it's not down to Cardwell who can put them away. We have too many midfielders of the same ilk and we need a ball player.

Probably the worst Southend game I have watched for years. Definitely the worst match under Maher.

I thought both teams were woeful and it was a terrible advert for the National League...more like Sunday League!

We have run out of steam and complete lack of creativity.

Onto the next games but we won't be top 3 next season unless we get some more attacking creative midfielders in the team.

More from their board:

Interesting match, a real toe to toe battle, Very good game to watch.

Some really gutsy performances from our boys today

really!!!!
Did notice their fans were in high spirits when they were leaving the ground, thought they were just pleased to get a point towards safety but maybe they genuinely thought it was entertaining!

Just looked at the table
Without the -10 we’d be in the playoffs with 62 points
Best defence in the league
Third best goal difference
The -10 came with an embargo of over a year
We played games with barely enough players to make the bench
I get people are frustrated about recent performances but let’s take a look at the bigger picture

Judge Kev and co next season if we throw in some of these performances but not this season, a season we could have lost our club and also could have got relegated if these players jumped ship. They didn’t, they stayed loyal to us and have given everything for the badge this season
Look I agree the team should get credit for what they’ve achieved but also don’t think that gives them a free pass to end the season with a whimper. To challenge for promotion next season we need to be on it. To be on it we need to foster a mentality where we’re looking to win every game. To expect things to suddenly click pre season .. hmm I’m not sure. I think we should be looking to finish this season as we plan to start next. Just “getting to summer” is a bit of a slap in the face to those showing amazing loyalty watching week after week. I’m certain the management team don’t want us just to “do enough”.

On the plus side Kev’s learning a lot about some of these players.

Still completely lopsided to judge a team/squad/management team that was under an embargo for 18 months...and had a shambolic (at best) pre season, at times one substitute, players not getting paid oh and deducted 10 points.
Let's get this frankly incredible season given all of the above finished.
Let's get some players in the summer.
Let's have a normal pre season like a normal club.
Then Let's see how we go and then make judgements given a level playing field for the lads.
I share many of the frustrations shared in previous posts but come on....the fact we've got a club and didn't get relegated is more than enough this season.

Ok that’s your opinion. There’s quite a few games left. Despite the points deduction if a few results had gone our way we were in for a shout for the play offs. Not saying 10 unbeaten is a disaster .. nor am I saying these players haven’t worked miracles .. but in my own opinion we need to be developing a ruthless streak now, in preparation.

Maybe the team has run out of steam but, they still put in a shift, even though it was bereft of ideas. Today was poor and that is a polite assessment. Ten unbeaten but, twenty or so points dropped in the last thirteen games and much of it due to the very predictable, one-trick pony play, that opposition teams have exploited on a regular basis. Even some of the poorer sides in the division have added to their points tally, at our expense, because they know what we are going to do and nullify it.

This season is only about players wanting to make themselves one of Mahers favourites, we all know those that can do no wrong, and to be first picked next season. This team is capable of much more. The tactics ain't. We can, on a good day, move the ball at pace and with purpose and then, quickly, we revert to type. We can have a good preseason and bring in competent players but, if they are sent out to emulate this season's tactics, we will be in this league for a long time. Change or be dammed. Forget the key to the city and give the man a coaching manual.
