SMS Bailey, Clarke and Francis on the list

Been away for the day, and just logging on now cannot believe the news.

BUT...

After a few minutes to think about this, I applaud Uncle Ron for his ruthless nature on this matter. They were offered substantial pay rises, they still rejected these, so sod them get the out of here and use the money to reinvest in people that actually want to wear the blue of Southend.

Things are quiet at the moment in the transfer market, but when players return from their holidays, I fully trust Tilly to get them in. Macca has rejected an extension too i see...He told me last December he was happy here and didn't want to go anywhere - but if most of his mates are being forked out he may be reconsidering staying put IMO. He would be the one I would be most disappointed to lose, but fingers crossed he signs and we can rebuild the midfield around him.

I think Ron is prepared to pay the big wages but only to players he feels deserve it. In truth these players can be replaced and Ron knows that. I am fully behind his decision.

jesus!
i dont know what the hell to feel at the moment!!
thats outrageous!
yeah, what an amazing bold move by the club..
but my god! you can't do that!
please tell me whats going on?!?!
couple of my favourite players!
'dissapointed', to say the least..
:'(

No, sorry. Doesn't scan for me. And the rhyming? Abysmal.

I think I'd feel a lot more comfortable about this if the quotes about the situation had come from Tilly rather than Ron. Of course, contract negotiations fall into the remit of the chairman but the understanding of what players are about, how they are best motivated and handled must come from the management.

I am concerned that Ron is using bullying, business tactics in a situation that needs much more delicate handling and man-management. He's undoubtedly called the agents' (and possibly players') bluff on this but I really hope it doesn't back-fire on us.

I totally endorse this point of view. Well said

Don't think he should be showing more loyalty, but DO think he ought to be a bit more realistic. I think he's shown exactly why he was a L2 player at times, not least in the last couple of games. The final comment in your post is what sums it up though - he's been here for a season - so why should he suddenly expect so much more than has already been offered?

In any job if you're relatively new (a year is still fairly new in my book), then any sign of faith in you by way of an increment/bonus or whatever financial incentive should be welcomed, not thrown back in the face of your employer saying "I'm better than that, gimme more!"

Not interested in him now, he can sling his hook.

PS: And I see Sam has just made almost exactly the same point - great minds eh? Shame we're only stoopid women who know nowt about football!

Ha yes. Great minds. Mind you being female and all that we should be in the kitchen. PM receieved telling me to do exactly that!

Its true though. If my employer came to me after a year and said Hey sam you've being doing really well this year and we want to secure you for a further couple of years - heres an improved salary offer then I would bite their hands off in fact proably their legs too! He is not leagues apart from anyone at Southend and if he thinks he is then good riddance to him.

Agree Ant, let's remember that he came to us originally because he WANTED to after having been here on loan. I admire his passion and his courage on the field and he could definitely marshall midfield admirably without Bailey.

On paper, i would say Ron is right. If players dont want to play here, c ya later BUT i would like to know what Ron offered because all those players deserve to be in the high L1 pay bracket and if the offfer was below that, then i would support the player on this

Anyone else now thinking what a LEGEND Adam Barrett is?

Comes in gets on with his job and goes home, no messing around and a loyal gent too!

But what if the increased salary offer was really crap after a year/two years of good service, which could've been the case with these three? They aren't necessarily saying they don't want to play for the club, they just feel they deserve better, which maybe they do.

I said this earlier. If they wanted to play for the club that much then having an improved offer put in front of them would be a dream come true. They don't care enough to wear the badge so why offer them more?

I don't necessarily think that people are criticising Clarke and Francis so much for precisely these reasons, it's Bailey that's being shown up here.

Without knowing exactly the terms no-one can say for sure, but being guided by the wording in the releases on the OS we can only assume that these new offers were reasonably good.

Indeed, and also makes you question again those tears of Peter Clarke's at Doncaster.

I agree with what Ron has done but what gets to me is that no-one knows the facts yet still go aroud cursing each player who hasn't signed a contract. My view is that Bailey realised that he is the best player at the club and (probably on the advice of his agent) wants his wages to replicate that fact. Ron didn't take kindly to the fact that his players wanted to dictate their wages and placed them on the transfer list.

Its easy to say Bailey is a money grabbing **** and he thinks that he is bigger than the club but no-one knows if this is the case.

At least 2 of the 3 players could be regarded as integral members of the squad, and RM knows that, so I'm fairly certain he wouldn't offer them tiny increases. Also, it was quoted that he had offered them 'substantial' pay rises. Whatever a football player thinks he deserves is more often than not a fair bit more than he deserves in reality.

never trusted him from day one people will have a go at me for this but we used it before a few years back,
WE WANT MARTIN OUT

Here is where you contradict yourself slightly. Fair enough if he IS the best player in the squad, but it is debatable, and when a player wants his wages to reflect his status/talent, invariably that player gets an over-inflated opinion of himself and therefore demands over-inflated wages. And because footballers aren't very bright, they will always follow the agent's advice of grab as much money as you can so that I can get a bigger cut of it.

It's just not that simple. The club is in a better position to determine how valuable the player is to the club and where he should fit into the wage structure. The player does not decide it and nor does his agent. Fair enough if he is the best player, but it's quite clear that he overrates himself and thinks he deserves a lot more than he does.
