His body has to adjust to push the left arm over to the right hand side of his body. If you have something that is on the right side of your body, you would use your right arm to grab it right? Surely same applies here.

Also, 35 seconds into this clip, the same keeper uses his right arm this time.

Yep watched that and due to the angle of where the ball is coming in and the position of VDS, his body rotates and his right arm becomes the best arm to save. Don't think that was the case for Smith last night but he did a good job of readjusting and saving with his left after committing himself to the right corner. Good save.

When diving right you go with your left hand if you need extra height and your right hand if you need extra distance (width).

Smith needed extra height so had to go left-handed, the harder technique.

clearly that's where iv been going wrong for all theses years iv been diving right with my right hand :hilarious::hilarious:

you watch the video Smith dived pass the ball and had to extend his left arm to tip the ball wide happens all the time in open play and exactly what Maldon blue said.

I don't know the answer to this. But is Smith left or right handed.
Did he go for it with his left because that is his stronger hand.

Yes to this. Good save but this is what happened.

Are people seriously trying so hard to find fault with smith that they're querying whether he saved a penalty with the correct hand? It was a top save, if people say its the greatest save they've ever seen then that is there opinion what is the point in trying to prove them wrong. I think you'd find it hard to find any neutrals that thought that was not a good penalty and obviously an even better save.

all those other saves posted i think were all shots from outside the area giving the goalkeeper a lot more time to get set and dive. A penalty is very different due to the fact that the keeper really has to pick a side to dive to and to a point hope, hence why the keeper tends to dive lower and the try to adjust to the height of the ball.

A really excellent save, i can't see how anyone would give it any less credit than that. Even though he guessed the right way that doesn't guarentee that Smith would have the reaction time and strength to divert the ball away, I think a lot of people forget that even the strikers in the lower professional leagues hit the ball considerably harder than any Sunday league players. Lets just hope this is the kind of performance that can build a platform for the lad to build on.

With a shot in open play from distance the keeper can anticipate where the shot is going as the ball is generally at the players feet, the player is unlilely to be at 90 degrees and the keeper can move more freely.
With a pen the striker is closer and is away from the ball. Smith chose his side and dived at a height which meant that if he picked the right side he could reach a low ball with his right hand, a high ball with his left and a "goodheight " ball with either.
He chose the right side and managed to get his left hand up with enough power to get the ball away, time it differently and you might be able to tip it over but often the comments would be of the "did well but didnt get quite enough on it" type

Bingo. Well put

I think he should have caught it to be honest.

I know some people have been getting a bit carried away with Smithy's save but I've just seen Rooney's penalty from last night that he blazed high over the bar. My initial thought was that Smithy would still have got a hand on it.

I think some people are getting a bit confused in the sense that they believe one hand should save a certain shot depending on where the ball is.

When I'm coaching my GK's, I will always coach them to try and save a shot by driving BOTH hands towards the ball. For 90% of the shots that a GK has to save they will be able to either parry with two strong hands or catch the ball with both hands. With those top/bottom corner saves (much like the pen and Smithy's great save down to his left in the 1st half), the gk will still be coached to try and go with both hands, but at some point during the save you will have to lead with one hand.

Simply put, the hand you lead with is the one closest to the ball and if you initially try and make the save with two hands, then for top corner shots the hand on the opposite side to that you are diving (ie left hand when diving right) will be the closest, and for bottom corner shots the hand on the same side you are diving (right hand for a right dive) will be closest.

For the examples of VDS and Cassilas saving with their inside hand for top corner saves, it's a fantastic recovery save from an initial mistake (maybe as simple as not being set in time for the shot).

Which one though?

Yeah but he would have got slated on here for giving away a needless corner !

Staines Shrimper says it beautifully above but in my mind...

Whichever one he ****ing likes!!!

:Worthy:

 as a fans point of view then I agree- I don't care how he keeps it out as long as he does! But I'm sure Smudge himself would want to save as many shots with the right technique, to have as a high a shot stopping success rate as possible!

Interesting comment in Smiths article on the OS yesterday.
Maybe there is 'deep love' after all !

“I’m confident with the back four and they’re more than happy with me at the moment. We have a good relationship together and we have to build on it from there.”

Smith pulls off a cracking save and people then criticise he should have used his other hand. Bloke cant win.

He could save it with his backside for all I care, if he keeps the ball out then thats all that matters.
